Your personal opinions on Blood pythons?

I am considering getting a baby blood python, what is your personal opinion on these?
(good or bad)

After a lot of years of keeping a lot of different kinds of snakes, bloods & STPs are now all I have. :) Very rewarding & fun snakes to work with, but they're definitely not ball pythons (which is part of what makes them so great). How long have you had your ball?

had my ball about 3 weeks, im defiently not considering getting a blood just yet maybe in a couple of months maybe even years :)

We have a few bloods. I love the fat sausages :)

what are they like? hard to keep, friendly etc...

Their husbandry is very straightforward. We maintain all of ours in rack systems, the largest tubs in which are 52x20x12, and keep them at average temps of 80-82 degrees. They're alert, vocal snakes that are very aware of their handlers/keepers. Youngsters can be defensive & nippy, but with gentle handling they will usually outgrow it. Most of our bloods & STPs are snakes we're comfortable letting our 5 year old handle, and we have a quite a few. Do you know anyone local to you that works with them? Having an experienced keeper mentor you is a great way to learn. :)

oh ok thanks alot, and nope im from the uk there is not alot of local breeders/herps so is quite hard to find places without having to go like a 4 hour drive somewere :(

Can't go wrong with a good ol' blood :sweeet: I really enjoy the two I have, and I would take a 4 hr drive to go get one I really wanted if need be!

You are still VERY new to Ball Pythons and until you gain more experience under your belt I would not suggest getting another snake especially not something like a Blood.

Bloods are amazing snakes and I agree completely with this

, when I was contemplating acquiring a Blood I was lucky enough to be able to turn to Kara with all my questions and I also got to see her collection first hand and get to hold an adult which help me decide whether or not Bloods were for me.

I am now the proud owner of a BIG 24lbs boy that was produced by Kara and Ryan

Again they are great snakes but they are not Ball Pythons ;)

Yes I would agree, I would wait for a while. Get sometime behind you with your Ball. Bloods are Great but are not Balls. Enjoy your new family member and keep us updated on things.

I found this thread a really interesting read and give my thanks to all of the people that replied with positive feedback on Bloods. I had recently considered risking the wrath of my hubby to get a baby Blood. However, on another forum I had commented on another member's Blood pictures he had posted and mentioned that I would like to get one some day. His responses pretty much turned me off of getting the Blood altogether. He said that while his two weren't typically nippy, that the majority of them were biters and had really hot tempers that were on a short fuse. :( The video of the striking snake he provided pretty much did it for me and I chose not to go that route. It is nice to hear that other people have them and find them to be a pleasure to keep. While I know they are much more difficult than a BP, I didn't think you needed to be a snake expert aficionado to own one. :oops:

I think you'll find bloods to have some similarities to your BRB. Both can be nippy as youngsters, and both prefer to be kept cooler than other tropical species. Bloods & STPs have a bad reputation started by the surly WC animals that came in many years ago, and perpetuated by keepers with little to no experience with - or understanding of - these snakes. Captive breeding efforts have demonstrated that all three species can be very docile animals to work with, and they aren't rocket science to keep. Glad to see that you're doing some additional research! :)

Kara, thanks so much for your input. :) I have had the best of luck with my BRB. He has never been nippy and is just as docile as my Corns. :D Some day I do believe I really will get into the Bloods. They are beautiful snakes and I have admired them for some time. As for doing the research....I always do as much as I can before I dive in......its the same with all of my animals. That's the only way to ensure you are providing them with the best care possible. ;)

And that's exactly the attitude ALL keepers should have, whether their charges are finned, furred, feathered or fanged. Wish everyone felt that way! :gj:
