? Can someone explain what a "Dinker" is ?

I've seen the term used on the forums. Is it another term for a normal?

A 'dinker' is a cutsie name for an animal that looks interesting, and has colors or markings that a person thinks just MIGHT be due to a genetic mutation.

In other words, it's an animal that you will 'dink around with' to see if you can prove it to be a new morph.

It is not of any known morph, it just looks like it might have the potential to be a new morph. :)
Dinkers are considered to be 'interesting normals' until they are proven otherwise. Many morphs were discovered when someone picked up a 'dinker', and bred it out, and proved it to be genetic.

Normal ball pythons are extremely variable in color and appearance, which is why most dinkers do not 'prove out'--they turn out to not be a morph, but just an interesting normal, after all.

Dinkers get some respect, because a lot of the new morphs that are being discovered now are VERY subtle. Morphs such as Russo, Mystic, Trick, and Spector are very difficult to differentiate from normal ball pythons--someone noticed a little 'something' about them, and decided to try to see if it was genetic, and there you go.

A dinker is just a snake with some interesting pattern/color that you want to play around with and see if it might be genetic. Usually it turns out to just be a cool normal but occasionally something really cool comes out of it

If it werent for dinking around with interesting looking snakes the snake industry/hobby wouldnt be what it is today. I am still blown away by the variety of reptiles available today and that is what makes exotic pets so much more unique and much more fascinating than your domestic "normal" house pets.

"Dinker" is such a demeaning term for a snake named Royal Python. I like to refer to them as a "Possible"...

Dinking with dinkers sounds so much more fun imo.

I like that, the possibilities are endless. Possibly.

The term 'dinker' pretty much originated with Ralph Davis who has always had such an interesting perspective of the ball python 'industry'

personally I prefer to call mine special projects I've got several special projects that I've been working on for several years and several others that didn't pan out. But SOMEDAY I might get lucky and uncover a new highly desirable highly sought after morph. And then again maybe pigs really will fly.... :rolleyes:
