A word about cats & rack systems...
Just recently built my first rack system and got a few new ball pythons too, and I had them all nice and snug in their new little tubs until my cat comes along and decides it is a good idea TO PULL OUT ONE OF THE TUBS and push it around on the floor! :O:O:OThank GOODNESS I was home at the time and was able to catch him in the act, and also that it was only a 6qt tub that has a lid on it so luckly he couldn't actually get at the snake.
Needless to say I'm now getting those little clips that keep tubs from sliding out and making sure we can't have a repeat of that incident....it could have been a lot worse, and I just wanted to warn people in case you have cats that can get near your snake setup.
I'm surprised he even cared about what was in the tubs, the other two kitties don't even glance at the snakes but Quincy is always looking to get his nose into something....

Those wiley kitties!
Honestly thats why I dont have cats...they get into stuff WAY worse than dogs IMO.
I've had lots of valuables broken because of a cat. :rage:
Good thing you were home to witness the problem!

Cats will get into anything that looks new, even if it's something stupid. When I set up a new 2.5 planted aquarium I found my cat trying to have a go at it - I thought she want to eat the betta when I realized she had never seen an aquarium before (and I put it on her favorite perching post, silly me!) and just wanted to figure out what it was. Mine have always been indoor cats, so they've never really "hunted" anything - they'll play with baby Cuban anoles that have found their way inside the house and starved, but nothing bigger or stranger than that. Once you put the locks on the cages, even if they're really basic, she's lose interest fast.
Still a very good thing to know, though, I'll keep that in mind for when I start breeding mice and need to keep them out.

I love both my dog and my cats. My cats have never messed with my racks though. I have both back stops and front locks on all my racks.
Check out what's new on my website... www.Homegrownscales.com

Youre entitled to have an opinion, even if its wrong... :D ;)

Haha wow, I'm totally a cat person but I can understand why people don't like them...it takes a special kind of .... patience.
They're all banned from that room now till I get the locks !

My cats love effing with my racks! Good thing they have pins. And o yeah nothing like a good spray of water to get the cat to leave them alone!
-
I have locks on mine, but most of my cats could care less about the snake rack. Except for the kitten when I slide out a tub for cleaning, or to take out a snake, then she likes to think that might be a good place to hide if I would let her in. I have to make sure slide tub back in when I take a a snake, or else there might be a ninja kitten hiding in it. :)
Btw Mike, cats rule, dogs drool!! (J/k, I have a dog too :D)

The cat is in no way allowed in the snake room. He'd probably get eaten messing with the wrong snake.

The cat a friend gave to me this winter who actually wanted her back last week liked to get into places she was not allowed. She didn't pull the bin out, I was feeding and went to put the snake back in and found her lol!

I'm not sure who's worse when it comes to my snake room.... My dogs are always curious about feeding time (bad idea) while my cats think it's a jungle gym. My hubby's cat has a rack shelf all her own which is code for I don't need to fill it at the moment so I leave the tub out and she lays on it all the time. My cat is scared of the balls and adult corns so he just lays in the floor soaking up the sun. I love all my critters so I can't say cats over dogs or vice versa. If I had to choose, it would probably be reptiles and cats though. Easier to take vacations that way.

My dog is way worse than my cat! If my dog notices something new he will do anything in his power to check it out. My cat thought rodents trapped in tanks were the best thing for all of 5 minutes then lost interest. Now if my sisters cat happens to visit ever all living things I want to keep alive get double locked in a room. I love that cat but find that anything living thing I really like it will be the first to get killed off/eaten.

I have a video of my cat pulling out my tubs. I can post it if you want, it's pretty funny. The bad part is that he KNOWS what's in there and he WANTS it! I LOVE my cat! He's just a stinker. Those little things that go in front of the tubs would not stop him so I had to jimmy up some good locks. I'll post a pic of what I did and put it in this comment in a min.

I know while I was building the rack he thought it was another cat tree for him to play on.

My cat is FAR too interested in anything that moves. She will also stare at my BPs right outside their cages. This is a problem especially with my rescue female because she to was too interested in the cat. There's no way she could take down the cat, but she seemed to think differently. Luckily, I was in the room at the time (the cat is never allowed in that room unless I'm in there) and tried to snatch the cat away to kick her out. Apparently, she was scared because she literally mauled me when I picked her up. I still have the scars to prove it.
TBH, I am not a cat person. My fiancé and I thought it would be a good intermediate pet for her since she never really had responsibility for an animal. She walked the family dog once and a while. She loves the cat, but I'm still working on getting her to think of the animal once in a while instead of herself. ("The bowl is empty...feed the cat!") But the cat drives me absolutely nuts. I love her, but I'd much rather have a dog. Had I known that the cat and all her costs would fall to me permanently, I probably wouldn't have gotten her. I am definitely a dog person.
Give me dogs, horses and snakes any day. Lol.

Here's a link. I made the video public, let me know if you can't watch it. Sorry about all the commentary. :)

My cat tries to BITE my snakes when they're out! And bat at their heads or whatever else he can get at. It's ridiculous and annoying. I have to lock him up in another room when I have my snakes out. I still love my cat and prefer him over my dog, though. Sorry, I'm a total cat person.

Okay here's the pictures of how I locked my rack. I don't like how the screws go through to the other side, but my snakes are very secure now and my cat can't open them.

I went to Wal-Mart and bought one of those hook lock sets with springs. I also bought some picture hanging wire. I think you can get the basic idea of what I did. I separated the pieces of the hook and screwed both loops into the side. I have a RB rack and I was able to screw them in by hand. Once I got it started it was fairly easy to screw in with my hand and later using a pair of needle nose pliers. Then I fastened the hook on one of the loops and roughly measured how much picture hanging wire I'd need. I cut it and then looped it through both sides keeping it tight. Then I just wrapped the extra around. Works great! It may not be the best solution, but it works!

Cats are great, I love mine! But they can be a real pain. They are nosy, destructive, unpredictable, cuddly and affectionate all at once. I make sure my snakes are safe from my cat, I wouldn't trust him with them alone for one second.
