Need some help...UTH won't stick to tank.
    Hello all,

I am new to the site but i have been looking around for a while. I just recently got my son his first corn snake. The tank is a basic setup with a day heat lamp, turf substrate, a hide and Under the Tank heat. My problem is the UTH isn't sticking to the bottom of the tank. I don't know how to fix the problem. Should i spray some addhesive and stick it that way? Any help would be great. I really don't want to run out a buy a new heat pad. The heat pad is working just fine but isn't sticking.

    Thanks

    Welcome to BP.net!

You should use aluminum foil tape.

Does the UTH have a thermostat?

    Do you have probed thermometers?

Example of proper use of aluminum foil tape... Only go around the edges... Covering all of it can cause the UTH to fail.

You can use foil tape or some other high temp resistant tape to attach your UTH.

To add to Aaron's comments, please ditch the turf "substrate" - it is extremely hard to clean, doesn't hold humidity or absord waste, and is therefore incredibly unsanitary.

Also checkout the corn snake caresheet.

I have had the same problem with mine. I use aluminum foil tape as others have suggested. It works great. :gj:

Okay just want to make clear I have one of the Zilla UTH that is has a adhesive backing on one side. So if I understand correctly I can just use the aluminum tape to reattach it? Is that righ?

Yep! And a roll of it will last you quite a while. I just use it around the edges to hold the UHT in place, like Aaron illustrated in the pic he posted.

But is the UTH regulated by a thermostat? If it is not it can (and will) get hot enough to kill your snake.

Here are 2 good thermostats... Don't bother with the junk sold in pet stores.

Also what type of thermometers are you using. If you are using the stick on, dial type they will need to be replaced with a digital thermometer with a probe.

UTH's do not change the air temperature in the cage so unless you have a probed thermometer with the probe sitting on the floor of the cage you have no way of telling hot hot it is. (and if it isn't being regulated by a thermostat they can get up to 120+ degrees :O)

Here is a good probed thermometer. These can be purchased at Walmart for $12. They measure 2 temperatures and humidity so you only need 1 for the cage.

If you can't find that one, this will also work.

I have been looking for that type of thermometer with the probe but no one has one here. the only ones that i have been seeing are the ones with the wireless piece. I can't find one with the probe.

Also I don't have a thermostat yet. I am planning on getting one of those soon because i know that i will need one with the ball pythons.

Right now i have to be budget friendly until i have enough money to get the right stuff for the other snakes that is why i have started off with just a corn snake. I want to get everything perfect for that guy first then get the other snakes. I really can't thank you enough for all of the help.

Also how should i secure the probe to the bottom of the tank over the heater? Could i just use the foil tape. I don't really want to let it lay in there. Should it be between the glass and the mat? or should the probe be in the tank on top of the glass?

No tape should ever be inside the cage. You should use hot melt glue.

Corn snakes are just as susceptible to UTH's as ball pythons are. Until you have a thermostat you should not use the UTH.
