Help please
I rescued a bp about 2 months ago and I woke up this morning and noticed 4 or 5 eggs. I have never done this before, I googled and got some idea of what to do but since there are experts out there I'd like ur advice.
She is in a 24g tub, with a large bowl for a hide and a dog sized water bowl. There is only paper towel for the bottom. Temp reads 89, and humidity is at 80.
I don't have any sort of incubator. She seems very protective right now so I haven't tried to open the tub.
Any help would be great

Wow, what as surprise.
If I were you, I'd personally try to come up with an incubator ASAP (or either try to find a breeder near you who would be willing to take the eggs off your hands?), and in the meantime I'd probably leave the eggs with the mother. That's just what I would do if I found myself in that situation.
Hopefully someone with experience breeding will come along and be able to give you some better more specific suggestions and advice.

Leave the eggs with the mother for the time being. In the mean time, build a DIY incubator from a cooler.

There are tutorials on how to make a simple inexpensive cooler incubator on here. I would leave them with her and make sure that the temps are spot on and maybe raise the humidity a touch until you can get one built.
Good Luck!

Re: Help please
Here is another option, depending on how easy your setup would be to convert for maternal incubation. I have not tried maternal, but I know a few of the members here have very good success with it. This might be simpler for you if you aren't intending to breed in the future, and don't need the extra thermostat you would have to buy for an incubator.

If the eggs are over a heat source, be sure the cage floor never exceeds 90F.
Put a lot of moistened sphagnum moss in, to keep the humidity up.
Expect mom to act evil towards you--that's her job. Once you have an incubator, put a hand towel over her head, grab her behind the head and by the tail, and unwind her from the eggs. Move the eggs into the incubator, and wash mom in warm water with a baby soap or a few drops of dish soap in the water. Clean the cage with soap and water. These things remove all of the smell of the eggs, so that mom will snap out of it.
Most females will be back to their old self once they're off the eggs. It's like flipping a light switch. :)

Thanks everyone. I talked to a breeder who helped me set up something real quick. It's not amazing but he said it will do the trick.
There were 6 eggs total but one was really small and brown :( all except the brown one were stuck together and was told to keep them together and not try to pull them apart.
Heres the set up w the eggs

Interesting setup. Good luck!

The small brown one is a slug--it's an infertile egg that wasn't shelled, so you can just throw it away. It will only rot, and could cause a problem for the other eggs.
The eggs look great. :)

Re: Help please
Spiffy setup! Keep us posted on how it works for you, and good luck! :)
-
Good looking eggs! Here's hoping the mystery dad was something interesting :P I've got a new baby boa so I'll be boosting my pinky production, just give me a shout when they're due to hatch and I'll make sure to have pinks for you.
-
Thank you everyone, I'll keep u all posted :D

Congrats on the surprise eggs, and that is definitely one neat setup! Please keep us up to date on the eggs progress :)
-
So they are starting to dimple a bit. I don't know what I am doing wrong. The temp is 88-89 and humidity is at like 90. The eggs aren't wet.
Please help I don't want them to die :(
-
the top of the tank covered ? if not then cover it good with a couple heavy towels or foil to help prevent the heat lost and humidty. I also consider adding a little more water to the vermiculite itself might be drier than the tank and all youe humidty is the water in the tank . so ass some water to the micx ( not too much ) and see if they plump back up a little
-
might want to get a glass top for that tank so the humidity cant get out and get some Press N' Seal to put on the egg tub those wholes on the lid is letting humidity out too.
-
Thank you so much I'll do that!

I am guessing it's just a regular aquarium with a water heater? That's kind of brilliant. I would have never thought of that. Like others have said covering to top will help with the humidity issues.
Blessings to you!

That is a neat quick set up. Do you plan to make an incubator? It will be easier to keep everything steady in an insulated container. As for them dimpling, it looks like their are holes in the lid of the tub. I would cover them, or put some press n seal over the tub, then put the lid on.
-
You guys were spot on! I patched up some of the holes and humidity is now at 98% they are starting to look better! Thank you so much!!

Thank you all for your help with the eggs. I am hoping things work out.
Now I do have another question. Ive been trying to search for this but I'm coming up empty handed. Everything is telling me about how to care for the eggs but nothing on how to care for momma! I tired feeding her a smaller f/t rat last and being that she is a live feeder she wasn't interested. At this time the rats I have are too big to start her back with I do have a bunch of smaller ASF's for my picky ball. I tried offering her the ASF and she seemed real interested, got into her s but never would strike. After about 45 minutes she just turned away and let it alone.
What are the procedures of taking care of the mother after she lays the eggs? I want her to be as happy as possible.
-
Give her a couple of days after she lays to rest and recuperate, Then offer a small food item. If she refuses no big deal she has gone thru a lot of physical stress the past several months and she might not be hungry. Make sure her tub was cleaned very well after the eggs were layed to remove the smell of them and she should start eating for you pretty quickly.
-
Thank you! I didn't know if I should worry or not, and I cleaned it out very well already :D thank you again!
-
Nice incubator, I used the same thing the first year I bred leopard geckos, and it worked great!
Good luck on your eggs, what a great surprise!
Also don't be surprised if it takes your female a little while to get going again. Mine laid 50 days ago, and all she has eaten since then is a few rat pups (before she was eating medium rats!). She likes the pups because they don't move as much (I think).
-
She ate a small ASF today :) tho I think the only reason she did was because it was pissing her off lol
-
The eggs are still a little dimpled. Temp is steady and humidity is at 98-99. I did the flashlight test and they I can still see all the veins :)

This is all of them, they are looking less dimpled the ones on the outside have completely recovered but I was wondering about the dark spot on the one egg to the left. Is that mold starting?
http://img.tapatalk.com/a693689f-b169-d968.jpg
Also is there anything I can do about the condensation on the lid? It doesn't seem to be dripping on the eggs but I want to be careful.
I know they don't look the greatest but they are looking a whole lot better then they did. Any tips would be great. Thank you all for your help. You guys and gals have been amazing!
-
Re: Help please
*bump*
I'm not an expert, but I think poking a few pinholes in the top will let some extra condensation out while keeping enough in, or you could lightly cover it with tin foil... good luck with them!
Oh, and I'm pretty sure the dark spot is just a calcium inconsistency, I dont think there is anything to worry about.
Updates??
-
Thank you :) the eggs are looking amazing. They have fully plumped back up. And as for the condensation..it hasn't seemed to be an issue.
-
* Bump *
How are your Eggs doing, and is Momma back on feed?
-
Sorry for not updating! Yes everyone is doing great. All babies have eaten and two of them have been adopted. Momma has put on a lot of weight and is doing great.
