Complete and Total Ignorance
The paper, reporter and butthead that does the killing should all be ashamed of themselves for not understanding the value of these helpless creatures. I hope they now have swarms of rodents. BTW, he has been reported to the VA Department of Game and Inland Fisheries since what he is doing is illegal.

Harmless water variety... But we should shoot it anyway, just because some people are scared of snakes. Makes perfect sense.

Do people seriously have nothing better to do with their time than deplete an area of its snake population?
I just.. can't.

It's people like this that make me look down on humanity. It honestly ticks me off that people would do this, what gives them the right? Just because they think all the snakes are dangerous, and just because we're 'superior beings'. Load of BS. This guy is just as bad as the kid who lit a live snake on fire at my school. Makes me want to go over there and ________.

Wait--what?
I honestly wish that humanity would hurry up and realize that animal cruelty is a very serious issue. Not too long ago people didn't openly admit that dolphins were intelligent and that apes were thinking, calculating, problem solving animals. I just wish that this trend would keep progressing... and more quickly. Cases of animal cruelty are just a slap on the wrist in most cases. Some jail time, usually cut short, out on probation. Do onto others should be carried out against people. You lit an animal on fire... We light you on fire.

Some kid decided it would be cool to watch a snake writhing in pain due to being lit on fire. I didn't see it personally, but it was spreading thru my class via video. It was sick, I don't know how someone could live with themselves after doing that. Honestly. And I 100% agree with the statement you made. What does that old geezer hope to accomplish? Destroying a key part of the ecosystem around him? Haven't we done enough when it comes to destroying ecosystems?

to quote dennis leary...
"He's so cute. My fluffy little dog.. He's so cute- There's the problem. We only want to save the cute animals, don't we? Yeah. Why don't we just have animal auditions. Line 'em up one by one and interview them individually. "What are you?" "I'm an otter." "And what do you do?" "I swim around on my back and do cute little human things with my hands." "You're free to go." "And what are you?" "I'm a cow." "Get in the :cens0r: truck, ok pal!" "But I'm an animal." "You're a baseball glove! Get on that truck!" "I'm an animal, I have rights!" "Yeah, here's yer :cens0r: cousin, get on the :cens0r: truck, pal!" We kill the cows to make jackets out of them..."
Except in this example its not based on food but what animals have a right to live where we do and co-exist. If it isnt cute and furry, or at least considered by the majority as ok, KILL IT!

We must breed fluffy snakes :D
But seriously, people shouldn't torture animals because they don't like or understand them. The lighting on fire thing was really messed up.

See, people like that grow up to be serial killers, rapists, and mass murderers.
And we just let them get away with it.
Sometimes I HATE people.

I consider dumb, ignorant, inconsiderate wastes of life to be pests. I wonder if I call my local police department if the chief will allow me to use humane rounds to rid my town of them?
Humans: the worst kind of vermin.

Wait... what the hell is this microwave corn thing at the end? LOL!

I don't think this guy is going to be getting away with it. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has been notified. From what I understand, their enforcement division is pretty upset and is moving in.
I hope that the police officers who gave this idiot permission are also reprimanded for not knowing that it is against Virginia state law to kill a snake for no reason.
-
I am glad to hear that they are taking this seriously. Nothing is worse than standing by and allowing people to act this way. By stepping in, it does set a much better example for people who might think it is okay. I know a good portion of people don't 100% agree with certain laws, but killing an animal for no reason, that poses no immediate threat, should be a very serious matter.
I don't shoot my neighbors dog for barking like a moron at 3am. Just because a snake is alive isn't reason to kill it

Looks like the reptile community made some noise!

It's good that they confronted him. Only sad part is, he won't get what he deserves. That still irritates me a bit.

It looks like Karma did show up...

But he was forced to take a break from snake hunting when a bad reaction to arthritis medication put him in the hospital over Memorial Day weekend. When he returned home Wednesday afternoon, the day the column appeared in the News-Post, he immediately heard from Cundiff that his activities are off-limits.

Nice.

^^^ I don't like human babies, but you don't see me punching every mother that comes and shows me her kid and how 'cute' it is. So why do people feel the need to express their displeasure with something by killing it. Ignorant.

If only people treated all animals like the Igbo people do.
(taken from the Python regius page of wikipedia)
Beliefs and folklore
This species is particularly revered in the traditional religion of the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria. It is considered symbolic of the earth, being an animal that travels so close to the ground. Even among many Christian Igbos, these pythons are treated with great care whenever they happen to wander into a village or onto someone's property; they are allowed to roam freely or are very gently picked up and placed out in a forest or field away from any homes. If one is accidentally killed, many communities in Igboland will still build a coffin for the snake's remains and give it a short funeral.[13
