Idiocracy ITS HAPPENING PEOPLE!!
Just a quick rant. Is it just me or is the world getting dumber? Now I don't claim to be a writer, or an English major but I see people graduating high school with honors that can barely spell their own name!
SHAME on the public school system. SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!
I can barely read Craigslist anymore because it ticks me off so bad. Im looking for a new car and noticed all of the spelling errors and its driving me nuts. Enough that I felt the need to post this and rant to you guys.
I saw a job posting today that required the candidate to have a 4 year degree and 3 years experience yet I could barely read the job posting because it was so full of spelling and grammar errors.
On that note I cant get a decent job to save my life because I don't have a degree yet the person offering the job has an education of a 5th grader.
God it makes me so mad!!!!!!!! Thank you for listening to my rant.

*I'm *it's *can't :P :D

Thank you! lol. Those are things the computer should automatically correct. the ' key on the keyboard is too much work for me to hit.

Oh I know all too well how you feel. The amount of jobs I see that I have to read and re-read because of awful spelling and grammar... Shocking.
Just yesterday I was on Facebook and there is a particular girl I know who has completely atrocious spelling. A little while ago she worte "ay1 know were I can find sum voltray work"
 So I was really confused (it was late and I couldn't find the energy to decipher her status) and I asked her what "voltray work" was and she went off on one at me! apparently, Voltray work is similar to "voluntary"... :gj:
Obviously someone else got annoyed by her constant annihilation of the English language, and commented on a status yesterday. All of a sudden, like lifting up a rock and finding dozens of ants, all her illiterate friends came out and started defending her, one of them going as far as to say "most people can't spell" in such a way to make it okay!!!! I was fuming. She was even asked if she had difficulty spelling or if she just couldn't be bothered... the latter was her answer and it really annoyed me. So I chimed in and pointed out that FB has a spell-checker option, they she was getting very angry and threatening (she threatened the person that made the negative comment) but that she herself had stated that she could not be bothered to spell correctly.
I understand that some have difficulty spelling, and I don't consider myself to be better than these people because I can spell. But I did go to school and I think my time there was worthwhile and I took pride in my work and learning and I make the effort so I don't look like a complete moron - if I couldn't spell, I'd try and learn how, and I would make good use of a spell-checker.
Sorry if I've come across as mean or snotty.

You are complaining about people butchering the English language, which is mostly caused by laziness,
and then you go and make this comment...:D
I personally would not like having a computer fix punctuation for me.

A friend of mine is doing a masters in english, for his defence he claimed there are now three forms of english in use. Oral, written, and chat. He argued his defence with 'text' on a phone. He has a kid do the texting for the committee (faster...) and at the end he came out with a printed summary of the text sent both ways... all full of 'text shorthand' he was granted his degree. LOL... where R-U... and all the others are common to see in text and IM but are starting to creep into regular writing practices. It seems that where proper grammar and usage are missing 'text' creeps in. It is sad as there is a lot of reading between the lines and interpretations made.
-
I can't even write in text. Takes me longer to think what the shorthand would be.

Fortunately I live in a state that actually funds it's public school system. Most of the people I know can spell just fine.
-
I can spell fine but when i text i usually use shorthand or 'text' talk as kitedemon said. On here sometimes i mix in a little of it too. Not bc i dont know how to spell, but bc i just dont feel like taking the time to make all my posts look perfect for you all lol.
For example in this post i didnt capitalize "i's", use apostrophes, and didnt spell out "because". Am i capable of doing all of that? Sure thing, i got a B in english last semester. I dont consider what i just did to really be that bad, but thats my opinion as a 19 y/o who grew up with all of this kinda 'text' talk.
Now when i see ads on craigslist that look like this, then even i get annoyed and can understand what you guys are saying lol:
"heyyy peeples lookin to tr@de my ps3 and 7 games 4 sum ball pythun morfs femalesonly pleez, thanks hav a g00d day evry1"

I disagree with this. I don't think it is due to laziness. I think it is due to a lack of intelligence. Now I understand typos and such but I'm talking about people using the completely wrong word in a sentence.

I'm not too far from you. So our lack of intelligence may be creeping up your way soon.
This girl on my Facebook was home schooled and graduated with honors. I will now show you what I am talking about. Out of respect I will not post names but I will give you some examples of her "laziness."
it was defntly interesting..
men sux, they just dont get it..
I am a total idoit, lol typo I know but ironic.
some things we are going to work on and figure out some things for the summer (in home tutor vs summer school) WONDERFUL NOW SHES IN HOME TUTORING HER DAUGHTER. BLIND LEADING THE BLIND.
rode the carisoual
waiting for the carissal to open - TWO DIFFERENT SPELLINGS IN THE SAME POST!
Anyway I could go on and on but I have just noticed a general lack of intelligence these days and it bugs me. especially when these are the people denying me a job because I don't have a degree.
-
I'm thankful that the school systems here are better than where I grew up. My younger step daughter had the spelling word 'paleontologist' in first grade.
I, too, have a hard time writing in 'text' form. I can understand it, for the most part, but it takes me longer trying to figure out what I'm saying than to actually type the whole word out.
-
I can type fairly quickly. It comes from the fact I used to write my own novels in my spare time, so I developed a pretty quick hand when it comes to keyboards. Honestly, when people say it's too much work to hit the apostrophe button, I look down and notice that my pinky finger naturally hovers across that key anyway. More effort? Really? It literally takes me dropping my pinky finger to use most punctuation. So, no... 'Taking too much effort' is not an excuse. Hitting the shift key to make capital letters is also not an excuse. I look down and notice: Oh, my pinky finger is naturally hovering across that button too. If I hit that, it leaves my other fingers to select the proper key in need of being capitalized.
When we start making excuses, it's because we are just finding a way to get out of owning up to something. Yes, spelling mistakes happen. Grammar mistakes happen. I'm not super hard on people that slip up now and then, but there's a point when people start to use the excuses of: "It takes too much time"... "It's too hard"... "I don't feel it's needed all the time if I'm typing a quick message"...
By doing it more often, it gets easier. By doing it frequently, we get faster.
So why use the excuse that you can't, for whatever reason?
I timed myself typing this message. Just a few minutes. I stopped to correct a few things, but it didn't take long. It's just practice. The problem is, people are in too much of a hurry nowadays to practice, or feel a need to improve. "You can read it, so why should I correct it?" You don't have to correct it. But I'd rather if other people judged me based on the content of my words, not how the words are presented.
-
The only reason the "public schools" should be ashamed is that they allowed themselves to be forced into passing kids who should fail by their whining parents. "MY child shouldn't get a F and have to repeat the grade!" even when the kid can't do any of the work. Then the government wants to cut the spending... and the school administration cuts the budget where it affects the teaching, not where it's ridiculously inflated(in admin!).
I don't mind text speak, IN TEXTING. I understand trying to get a long message into the limited amount of characters. But in a forum, on Facebook, in a letter, or an email.. I find it inappropriate and in my opinion, it makes the person look like an idiot. When someone misspells 90% of the words, doesn't use enough grammar to be understandable or uses so many "shortcuts" that it's difficult to figure out what they're trying to say... they look like an idiot.
I will say that I do not whine about someone's grammar or spelling on Facebook. I just "unfriend" them, then I don't have to read the stupid posts that make my brain cells die. If they want to post like a illiterate mouth-breather... I can delete them and their similarly minded friendly can all congratulate themselves about how cool they are, while whining that they can't seem to land a job that doesn't include "Do you want fries with that?"
Note that I'm not saying that people who DO this are unintelligent. I'm saying they LOOK unintelligent. They look lazy and uneducated and sloppy. If I am looking to hire a person to do work for me, I would toss out every single application that wasn't filled out PROPERLY. I'm not a 'grammar nazi' but people can make an attempt.

It's amazing you can choose to be anything you want on the Internet, yet so many people choose to be dumb.

Re: Idiocracy ITS HAPPENING PEOPLE!!
In my experiences with craigslist, most posts with horrible grammar are scams.
-
I learned a long time ago that if you appear to be sharp in both word and deed, people will perceive you to be sharp, no matter if you are, or are not. Conversely, if you appear to be be a window licking moron in word and deed, people will perceive you to be a helmet wearing idiot.
I made up my mind many moons ago which one I wished to be perceived as...

Where do you think intelligence comes from? Hard work. I agree that lack of intelligence is absolutely the problem, but I think that that lack of intelligence is a direct result of the common mindset that we can sit on our butts and have life handed to us on a platter. I.e., laziness.

Why yes it is, thanks to modern technology and medical advances we have all but eliminated natural selection.
Just think of all those advancements that lets a paramedic revive some drooling moron that thought it would be a good idea to have sex with a light socket.

Re: Idiocracy ITS HAPPENING PEOPLE!!
I use a few abbreviations (lol, wtf) when writing on a forum such as this, but I would never take it further than that.
***Don't read below if you're easily offended, and please don't flame me for it***
I think that society in general is devolving. You look at how people talk, what people wear, and how they behave. It is outright indecent. I believe that if you don't look, talk, or act properly nobody's going to take you seriously. I see people walking around with their pants below their ass and think "Even if they had the skills, I wouldn't hire them for my company because they don't care enough to tie up their freaking pants." And that's the problem, people don't care anymore. You can't get locked up for most stuff anymore. If you went out looking and acting like people do now 100 years ago you would be arrested. If people don't care what they are acting/looking/talking like anymore, it's only a matter of time before they stop caring about life and die out.
-
I don't bother posting anything if I don't have the time to do it correctly. Even in text messaging, or on Facebook. I would be embarrassed to send someone a message full of lazy teenaged slang and shortened words. I would never want to portray myself as illiterate, and I have little respect for people who do, thanks to their sheer laziness.

Any time I see numbers and all lower case in a block of text (whether it's on a forum, facebook, etc.) I usually have to sit back and think about how badly I want to know what is being said. Being an avid reader it is just really distracting and disrupts the flow when I have to sit there and figure out what the [heck] they're saying.
I don't know if it's intelligence, my boyfriend regularly uses text speak and no punctuation in his texts (and it drives me up a friggin WALL), but he's also the best mechanic/machine head I've ever met. Other than being royally annoyed at having to decipher the crap, it doesn't affect my every day life very much. If the general population continues with it, I'll simply keep writing/speaking the way I see fit and hope they don't start having to figure out what I'm saying ;)

I just want to know if that came naturally or did you actually struggle to type like that. lol I thought about it and I would have to work really hard to type like that.

Oh lord.. Me too! I had such a hard time reading that. I couldn't type, text, or write something like that. My brain just doesn't comprehend it.
I hate when people say things like that. It really IS important to be able to speak and write correctly. The majority of the population will judge the intelligence and drive of people with bad language and writing skills.

What really gets me is how kids in school these days don't compete for intelligence like they use to. I'm only 35 but even when I was in school kids would make fun of other kids who couldn't speak or write well. Spelling bees were a big one. If you got too many words wrong you were made fun of.
It use to be important to kids to have these skills. It use to be important to kids to NOT get in trouble in school. If I got yelled at by a teacher or made to sit out of an activity, I was completely shunned by the class.
Seriously, this country IS dumbing down. It's incredibly sad that multiple other countries have better education now, and are more cultured than Americans.
Yes I make mistakes. I sometimes have typos or grammar errors, but for the most part I speak well.
