What Size Should I Expect?
I ordered my first ball python - a normal female - born in 2011. She'll be here Wednesday. What size range should I be expecting?

It really depends. Each snake grows at a different rate. If it is an early 2011, it could be over 1,000g possibly. If it's a late 2011 it could be as small as 200g.

Depends on a few things, how early in 2011 how fast the animal was started, whether or not it's a good feeder, feeding frequency, prey size etc. I have 2011 ranging from 250 grams to 900 grams.

We need a smaller age range than 2011, can you give us the month?
Didn't you ask what the size was before you bought it?

The person sending her will probably be your best bet, ask them. There are too many unknown factors to make more than an educated guess, the more details you can provide the closer people will get at guessing her actual weight.

I liked the breeder so I was going to purchase from them anyhow.
I was going to ask when they called to confirm the shipping date, but I was at school when they called and forgot to tell my parents to ask.
I have a feeling she is a later 2011. But I don't know for sure. Wednesday it is.

Hmm it really depends.. My bal python is 2 ft now and she 7 months, for you id say she'll be around 3 to 4 feet long :) hope this helps!

80 grams is what an hatchling out of the egg can weigh, so even if it was a runt to start with and fed several times there is no way this animal was born over 6 months ago making it an 2011

You'll want to confirm with the breeder. Information like that isn't something that's casual. It should be exact information. If it is incorrect, then what about their other animals? Could pose problems for other people.

Yes, I think I'll email them. They had an option for an separate listing for adults, so I was expecting sub-adult or juvenile.

I am relieved. This is my first snake. I went to pick it out of the bag and it turned its head towards me, and I was like, "Nu-huh." It would have been my first time holding a snake. So I put the whole bag in the cage and she let herself out. I think I'll give her time to settle in (thinking about a week?) then have her eat, leave her two days, then try to pick her up.

I spent most of the time with the camera taking a video. I am completely in love with how they move. I'll see if I can conquer Youtube.

Poseidon, part of being a snake keeper is handling the snake. Now that she's in the tank, I agree that you need to let her settle in and eat a couple of times, but then you really need to get over it and pick her up.
Handling her will be essential for husbandry and maintenance...not to mention they're pretty cool animals to hold.

^Agreed.
One of the first snakes my friends got was a Carpet Python (Yes, I know different species, but, same scenario) and he to was hesitant when trying to hold his snake, so much so, he didn't actually handle it, let alone hold it for around the first seven months (used tongs to pick it up when cleaning out cage). That resulted into an unmanageable snake which hated human contact. After a while, he slowly started handling it more and more, to where it is now. Still a bit snippy, but, a heck of a lot better than seven years ago. (As for my friend, he's gotten five more snakes, all which he handles well).
Moral of the story: Handle your snakes so they can be manageable and accustomed to being held!

I know, and agree. I think once I have her in my hands that I'll be totally okay. And I think having an open area to be able to go behind her will make me feel better about picking her up. Just a question though, how do you know if they are turning towards you to strike at you or because they are curious?

Normally they'll go in the classic 'S-Shaped position' before they strike, although there are some exceptions. Usually before I've been bit by a ball python (rare instance) she hissed before, but I didn't hear it so she bit me.
BP's normally almost never bite. Only rare instances it will, such as if you're handling it in an improper way, taking a female off of her eggs, or handling it while in a deep shed.

It becomes fairly obvious after the bite. :rofl: I kid, I kid.
If the neck is in a really tight S, and the head is tilted up at a 30-45 degree angle, you might have a strike coming. Other wise, they're probably just checking you out.
