My ball python just pretended it needed to shed? Uhh...what?
So earlier in the week my cinny girl started getting a pink belly and was looking faded, so I started migrating her water dish to the back of the tub to turn the humidity up. Yesterday, she was dull, pink belly, and had some very blue eyes.

Checking up on everyone tonight, she looks like she just shed....but there is no skin in her cage. The wife swears she didn't clean the cages.

    Any thoughts?

They will clear up before they shed. So blue stage, clear, then shed.

Huh? I don't think in the 24 years I've kept snakes that I've ever seen that.

    My mind is blown... :8:

So where do I stand so that people can take turns hitting me in the face with cream pies?

I haven't kept snakes for years on end, but I recently learned they clear up before they shed as well. There's always something to learn in this hobby.

Most of mine do this. My normal girl does ninja shed though...she can go from dull looking to blue to fully shed in 4 days flat.

My pastel boy, however, is the opposite. He rocks that awful looking pink belly for at least a week before he goes blue and then probably doesn't actually shed for another week.

Sounds like a drawn out process, how do you deal with feeding during this?

Well before the breeding season he would eat during the beginning part of it so he'd only miss 1 feeding (sometimes none). But he's been off feed for a little over 6 months now (only lost 150g).

First, my daughter's BPs all do the blue, clear, shed thing.

Also, she has a normal who will eat no matter where in the shed process he is. We noticed once when we had rats in the room to feed other snakes and we had no intention of feeding him as he was in shed.

He came out of his hide so fast in a panic. It was like when a dog smells something from across the room and suddenly comes running. Mind you this is a 2 to 3 yr old, 1350+ gm male, so he is not being deprived by any means.

Anyways, we let him have it. When I say in shed, I am talking total blue eyes and fugly. Buh Bye Rat. You wouldn't have known by the speed in which he devoured it that he was in full blown shed.

my pastel does the same thing. It seems like it takes forever to get him to shed but I don't change anything as far as feeding goes. He will chow down no matter what (hope he keeps it up).

    No need for cream pies!

To be honest, I have never seen one of mine with a pink belly...eyes in blue, yes, but never the pink belly. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just not paying enough attention.

P.S. I know I learn something new about either ball pythons or herps in general almost every day :gj:

All of my snakes get a crazy pink belly before they shed. The only problem I run into is with my BCI...who is reddish anyway and has pink scales on her belly at all times. I'm starting to be able to tell when her belly is pinker than normal...but she's a tough one to figure out. I somehow always miss her blue stage...so I have to look for her to get dull and somewhat "wrinkly". :P

    Haha! :giggle:

Its easy to miss if you aren't watching them 24/7! I don't know if I have really witnessed it either.

Mine get a pink belly as well, when this happens, their pattern usuaully isn't as crisp as normal. Some may not be able to tell, but since I see them every day, I can tell when they look off.
