    Please help. Mouth sores
So I just fed my female normal who is 625g and after I notices come cuts or sores under her mouth. We just bumped up her size of rat to smalls last week and she took one no problem. They are frozen thawed. To me it looks like her mouth had to stretch really far maybe and some scales pulled out of the skin. Also now her mouth won't close at the sides. Husbandry is spot on and I had her out yesterday and didn't notice the sores then so it had to be very recent. Here are some pics. (Note I wasn't squeezing hard, I just had to keep her still)

    Please help me!

Looks like some kind of scale rot. I would be very concerned if it spreading the quickly and I would get a vet to check it out.

The other issue, if the jaw is not lining up, there may be a circulation issue to the rest of the lower jaw, which would help explain the speed of the spread.

    How does the inside look?

I looked inside and its clean and clear. Like any of my others. As for it being scale rot, I feel like I would have noticed it yesterday when I had her out. Im not disagreeing, just thinking. What should be my first course of action if it is scale rot?

    Erm... tonsillitis? :rolleye2: Sorry.

That looks very strange. It does seem to be infected though. Were you able to open her mouth and look at the inside?

I guess it could also be a burn or other trauma. Infections can set in overnight, so do not feel bad if you did not see it yesterday. For any of it, you need to keep it super clean. I would put some Betadine on it (per the instructions). But this looks like something that might benefit from Silvadene, which you get from a vet.

The other concern is the jaw being out of line.

Her "jaw" (as in the bone part) closes. Its just her "lips" if you can call them that. I suppose you get betadine at drug stores and such? I read somewhere to get anti biotic ointment without painkillers. Is that a good idea also? I have heard that some ointments can harm the scales. Is there any you recommend?

I dont know if this matters but its only the one side of her "jaw" thats not closing. Not both.

I would avoid any antibiotic ointment. You can get betadine at Walmart, Target or the drug store.

Water based antibiotic cream is fine, excessive use of anything oil based can do some damage.

Might just be worth it to see a good exotics vet and have them prescribe you some antibiotics just in case. There might be some swelling from the infection that's making the jaw look funny.

We can only do so much through the internets. Sometimes a vet is the best option.

Does she ever rub on the side of her cage or tub? Like trying to get out?....

Generally not with the rubbing. She seems to be a fairly happy camper when it comes to housing. The part that confuses me is her paper towels haven't been like soaked in the recent past. Some of my others like to spill their bowls but she doesn't. Doesn't scale rot usually happen because of damp conditions.

If you go the betadine route make sure it's 1% and water it down to the concistency of tea.. Too strong and it could actually burn the snake. Also you can use tripple anti biotic ointment like a&d ointment. Clean it a few times a day and apply the ointment, it should clear it up. But if you are concerned definately go see a vet, they will give you definate answers. Hope that helps!! And good luck!

Some Pet Stores will sell a product called Vetericyn. It's 100%, not anti-biotic, no painkiller, developed for animals. It oxygenates the wound/ sore and helps feed the white blood cells trying to heal or fight bacteria. It's safe enough to spray on the inside of pets' mouths even (though I wouldn't suggest it) and safe for humans even. If you can get your hands on it, It's incredible stuff.
