Stupid bp owner!!!
And idiots like this "owner" are the reason we all get a bad rap. This happened a few towns away from where I live. I don't know if I'm more frustrated by the owner's stupidity, or the ignorant comments that the public made after reading the story. I have half a mind to call animal control and see if I can adopt the poor thing.

Smh at these people's comments that know nothing about our little buddy's. Kudos to rabernet setting them straight!

Awesome rabernet!!! I added my two cents too!

Re: Stupid bp owner!!!
 grrrr people are soooo stupid sometimes! The combination of people turning exotic pets loose and public ignorance is the exact reason why the new bill was passed in Ohio. People who dont know the truth should not make comments. I was raised with this quote "its easy for an ignorant person to seem wise by simply saying nothing at all, and a wise person can seem ignorant by simply opening his mouth"
-
Personally, I can't stand birds as pets. But does that give me the right to say "Birds shouldn't be pets! Make a law banning all birds as pets!"???? Absolutely not! And should the fact that I have a mortal fear of most creepy crawlies be reason enough to ban others from having T's???? NO!
Different strokes for different folks. It's all about being responsible.
-
Ughhh.
Kudos to Rabernet for setting them straight and providing educational information to the many comments that were made.
I liked this one... Keep in mind we are talking Ball Pythons here...
Quote:
"What a lot of people don't realize is a lot of these snakes are dangerous to our ecosystem. They compete with top predators for food. These pythons have been able to reproduce and flourish, and in the Everglades, they compete with alligators and Florida panthers for food, thus ruining the food chain. And that also ruins the tourist economy because people go to the Everglades to see alligators, Florida panthers, pelicans, et cetera, not pythons."

it's just another case of people believing that everyone should have the same beliefs/values as them. You see it in almost every aspect of life. Sad. :(

And pythons of all kinds DO require a permit in NJ.

My thought/question is, how do they know it was intentionally released? I mean let’s face it many of us have had the unpleasant experience of a snake or 2 getting out over the years. and a large python? 5ft is large? Most if not all of the stories you read about come from people who are fear snakes. They will write a story that promots that fear and shows snakes and their keepers in a negative light because that is what the readers want.
They dont want to hear about nor care about how we enjoy them as pets and that they are as tame as any other animal.

Agreed. I've been bit more times by dogs, cats, and even my horses then I imagine I ever will be bit by one of my snakes.
I will admit... I was always slightly afraid of snakes (not enough to bash keeping them or the hobby) before, but now I look back and think it was just a little bit silly. No point of being afraid of something you have no experience with or something that has never given you a reason to fear it.

Very good point! But since the article was written with that spin, that's what everyone assumed as fact.

Re: Stupid bp owner!!!
Good job Rabernet.
It's the media's job to monger fear. I live in Georgia and they just recently did a news peice about the number of snake "attacks" this year already. Not bites mind you, but "Attacks". We are home to 6 species of venomous snakes, and the majority are Copperhead bites. But this is just a blatent example of how misrepresented these beautiful creatures are to the general public.
BTW Rabernet, from the look of the head mark and more gold coloration, this appears as if it could be a YB. Might want to check into it.

Re: Stupid bp owner!!!
I realized after posting that I had put rabernet instead of JulieInNJ, but when I tried to edit it, too much time had past. I figured the two of you would be smart enough to figure it out.
Rabernet, are you near the Atl and did you see the news reports I was speaking of? Pretty shameful.

I didn't see it. Just moved to Columbus, GA two weeks ago from Atlanta.

Re: Stupid bp owner!!!
With all the hype bandied about on animal planet about giant killer alien snakes and smeared on the walls by the situation in the everglades (most of which is false or skewed information), why are we surprised when the general public react like this? They're doing exactly what the creators of that crap want them to do. Spread more lies and untruths.
Kudos to the folks stepping up to try and educate.

Well done, Robin and JulieInNJ!
Humans never fail to amaze me with their ignorance. I can only imagine where those comments would have ended up had Robin and JulieInNJ not injected some facts.
In case you ever wondered how a lynch mob can get started, just look at where those comments were heading before the facts showed up...
-
I never saw this story when it first came out. My paper was too busy documenting every stray dog and cat that was picked up by animal control...
-
Yea, those Ball Pythons are big and dangerous and ate both of my parents, then it broke thru the glass window and ate a full grown alligator that was just minding his own business.
I fear for the family down the street, they have 6 children.......just a matter of time before they all are swallowed whole......:colbert:

Rabernet, you are truly an asset to the community. Thank you for taking your time to stick up for our misunderstood friends. I hadn't read the comments there until it was mentioned here, but it was nice to see every ignorant comment replied to with facts. Nice work :snake:

And thought I was the only one who did that... My snakes won't catch aids from the cats will they? Lol
But in all seriousness thanks for sticking up for our hobby with the truth about our wonderful animals, Rabernet.

I was going to add a comment but I was busy trying to pull my Dobermann out of my 9 month old BP's throat.
/facepalm
[Give 'em 'ell, Robin!]

Don't be silly, you two.
That's why those "free kittens" always go so fast.
Folks are feeding them to corn snakes.
:)

OMG, I nearly died laughing at the comments.

if you watach the video you can clearly see how the images were chopped together. I think the one shows a burms head with a BCI body and a Ball with a burm body. Its pretty funny if you watch it.
