Going to get my Motorcycle Licence. But which bike!!!

Hey Everyone,

I am 19 years old will be 20 this year and I am going to be getting my motorcycle licence sometime next week. Well I need a bike (DUH). I dont want no crotch rocket. I want a nice cruising motorcycle that will get me to point A to point B. I have a crappy back so I want some thing that will have me not leaning forwards like a crotch rocket. My price range is 3000-4000. Looking for year 2000 up. So I have been doing some searching on kijiji. This is what I have found so far.

^I love that bike but its 1100CC that might be a little dangerous for a new rider. That and it has 98000 Km on it. So im iffy but its gorgeous!

How much experience do you have riding?

Even 650cc is a lot for an inexperienced rider. Your first bike should ideally be something basic - something light and maneuverable that you can safely learn the fundamentals on.

I would say that's perfect for someone new. While its going to seem to have a little zip for a new rider, they will shortly become accustomed to it and possibly even bored with it. That was my experience any way, I started with a little yzf 600, after a year I moved up to a busa. Now that's a lot of bike!

Well I dont have any experiance. How am I supposed to have experiance on a bike when I dont have pne to ride and I dont have my licence? Everyone has to start somewhere. Its not like I am going to buy the bike and take right to the streets. Ill go on some back road and practice for a few hours.

I think I would do fine with a 650 or 750 CC. Im a big guy so something with a little more CC to move my fat butt might be better haha.

I'm hoping to pickup the Can Am Spyder next riding season. I want to see how this whole 2012 end of the world works out first.

I'm not sure how tall you are, I'm 5'11'', and found the v-stars frame to short. I preferred the Kawasaki's better, as the frame is longer. Better look too. You sat on any of the bikes yet to even get a feel for how they feel?

Well the 2003 Yamaha V-star 650 classic is prob the one I will be getting. But like I said I havent looked at all of them yet. The owner says he is 6 foot 3 and rides comfortably. I am 6 foot so I should be fine.

Be careful, I was recently in an accident and lost part of my leg. I am a very careful driver and no matter how careful u are just remember there are some really really really dumb drivers out there so please look out for them. Have fun it's amazing I still love motorcycles and will continue to love them until the day I die.

Thanks man, I read your story. I am really sorry to hear it. Only if every driver could be as careful as most motorcycle drivers. Ill make sure your words are always in my head. I was in a accident in 07' as well. Got rear ended. Now my disks in the lumbar part of my spine are starting to degenerate at a fast rate and I got some other problems too. It sucks.

But anyways thanks for the words of wisdom and advice.

You should look at a kawasaki versys. I just got my first bike a week ago it's a er-6n looks like a cross between a crotch rocket and cruiser but it's really forgiving and great to learn on. The versys has the same engine and they have a nice upright riding position so yer back should be fine. I was worried about the size at first but in so glad I got it cuz I'm 250 pounds and 6' 2 and the smaller bikes are under powered for my size

If you have not done so yet, sign up and take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course (http://online2.msf-usa.org/msf/Default.aspx). Then about six months to nine months later take the advanced course. It will help keep you alive. After you get your bike, spend several hours in empty parking lots getting used to your ride by practicing the maneuvers learned in the course.

I've ridden for many years and being on two wheels is my main means of transportation (about 25 - 30,000 miles per year on bikes). Even with that experience, every three or four years I take another advanced course. It helps refresh your skills and keeps you sharp.

Haha Yes leave the guns behind! Not saying I wouldnt own one but guns are not unnecessary in Canada.

Yeah I know you can drive your bike up here but I think if you stay longer then 2 months you have to get a temp licence.

I am getting real excited to finally have transportation lol. Ill finally be able to get a job. Finally be able to get out of the house and just GO!. Be able to go over to a certain girls house :banana: Finally be able to out alone with out having my mom driving me everywhere lol.

Its gunna be nice. This bike is gunna have some serious mileage coming up haha. Friday the 13th is coming up too. Not sure if you have heard but every friday the 13th here in Ontario, THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of bikers get together in Port Dover and have a good time. I bet there are things like that over in the USA of course.

Oh and best of all I will be able to go out field herping. YAY!

I would suggest reconsidering the 650-750. I rode dirt bikes as a kid but when I got my license I hadn't ridden in close to 15 years. My first and only on road bike was a 1450cc Harley Softail. Granted I had ridden 15 years ago but mostly dirt and I didn't think the bike was over powered at all. I am not saying you need something that big but I am about 5' 10" and was maybe 215lbs. at the time. I am not sure how things work in Canada but here you can rent a bike for your road test. (Normally a 125cc beat up piece of junk) My over all suggestion would be get your license then try to find a plce if there is any near you that you could rent something. Even if for a short time. If you buy a 650 now you may decide you don't think it's enough shortly thereafter. I knew a feamle that rode and she bought a 600 or 650 right away. Within the first 2 months she traded it in for a 750. Mind you she may have been 5' 6" tops and probably 120lbs. or so. Sorry for the long post but since you are buying used I think if you could actually try something first for a bit you won't get yourself stuck with something you aren't happy with. Hope this all makes sense. lol

This is the only crappy thing about taking questions like these to forums. So many opinions. Dont get 650 its way to much. Get a 650 its fine. Dont get a 650 its not enough.

I guess the only real way for me to know is to try. My brother in law as driven a 750 all his life and he has had no problem with it. I think a 650 will be dandy for now.

It is plenty for anyone in my opinion, not the make and model, but the cc's. The reason I sold mine, was because I was getting too comfortable on it. I was doing wheelies on the freeway, getting more and more wreckless as each month passed. Im not a speed demon, but the tricks really gave me a rush. It really didn't scare me to do those things anymore, and that in itself scared me, if that makes sense. I'm not sure how old you are, I saw the thread title and started Swyping away, but if you have a passion for speed and tricks, get an endo, go offroad on a dirt track, and you still have the luxury of riding on the highway. If its strictly speed that you want, pay the $100 and take it to a paved track. My wife caught me wheeling on our road, and really made me open my eyes on how reckless I was being. My son was only a few months old, and the thought of leaving him behind was enough to make the thrill not worth it. I'm 26 now, haven't had a bike for 18 months, & I miss it like crazy. I would definitely be ALOT less reckless if I bought a new one.

If you want a crotch rocket, get a 600, or get a GSXR 750 and below. They come factory with power control settings. Take a state certified safety course, and take it annually.

Always remember, its not if you drop it, its when you drop it. If this is your first bike, buy used and ride a few thousand miles then buy new, because posting $644 for a piece of fairing the size of your forearm sucks. Buy something you can beat up a little and not feel to bad. There's lots of $1-3000 bikes that are in really good shape and well taken care of.

I cant get a crotch rocket because of the whole leaning forward hurts my back. I am in no words a speed demon or someone who plans on doing wheelies.

I just want something I can cruise on. Just start the engine and go. Go where. I dunno. But just go. Something that gets from A to B.

The one I am getting will be used and If I drop it yah I ll be upset for a bit but things like that happen. Oh well.

I just picked up a bike last year when I got back from my deployment. I ended up getting a 2001 honda shadow spirit (750cc). I'm about 6'2 and 185 lbs. I should pick up sojme forward controls for it, becuase I am a bit tall. However, aside from that, the bike has done it's job well.

It has enough power to get me in trouble, earning my first speeding ticket on it at the age of 22. Granted I am thinking of getting a larger bike. I am planning to do so in a few years. This is my bike to learn on, and practice skills. Not to mention it was cheap enough ($2300) that if I lay her down, I won't be too upset. Another factor is that it's a good bike to learn to wrench on.

Someone already mentioned a motorcycle safety course. I strongly urge people to take it. Even my father took one in his 50's after he recently picked up a bike, and was impressed with the information and skills he learned there. I don't know how they work in Canada, though here taking one provides a nice insurance discount, and you don't have to take a driving test.

When you get one, make sure to post some pictures.

Yah we have MSC motorcycle safety courses. I will be taking it right after I get my M1 and then take it again after I get my M2. The bike that im like 98% Sure I want is $4500 but I am gunna see if he will go $4000 for it.

Ill be sure to take lots of pics and I think I might get a helmet cam or a flip camera I can attach to the handle bars to get some good riding footage and have a camera with me for when I am field herping. (even though I have a nice big DSLR camera its not always fun running after snakes with a big chunky expensive camera around your neck)

Gunna see if this weekend I can find a dealership around here so I can go sit on some bikes and get a feel for some different ones.

Sounds like a good idea. I never rode or sat on any bikes before picking up mine, so I'm lucky that I truly enjoy mine.

first off is the common misconception: crotch rockets are bad for your back. Wrong.

A cruiser style bike is bad for your back. The more upright you sit, the more the disks of your back will be forced to absorb bounces and shocks to your back.

example: take some saucers or plates and stack them on your table. Bang the table and watch them hop and slam together. That impact would be absorbed by your disks. In a lean forward style bike, your arms and hips absorb this force.

Absolute best first bikes are the fuel injected SV650's. Good power but not enough to be trying to run down superbikes, handle and stop great, easy to insure, popular so easy to find a bike and parts. They have a huge following including the racign scene. Best of all worlds.
