Look what I found! Can someone tell me what it is?
So, I was digging around in my flowerbed, and found this little cutie pie. Tiny little thing, maybe 7" long? He's no bigger around than a pencil.

I did a search, and thought he was an earth snake, but my guides say they have no markings, and he's speckled.

Anyhow, here he is. Little cutie!

Looks like the head of a king snake. Hmm, not 100% sure though.

It certainly has a colubrid look to it. Beyond that, I have no clue. Cool looking, though!

Well, after some more searching I think he's a baby black ratsnake.

Here is the description from the Missouri department of Conservation website:

    Family:
Colubridae (nonvenomous snakes) in the order Squamata (lizards and snakes)
    Description:

Generally shiny black, but some individuals show dark brown blotches. Skin between the scales along the sides may be red. Small patches of red sometimes appear between the scales along the sides. The belly is white, mottled with gray or may be checkered with black. The upper lip, chin and lower part of the neck are usually white. Young are light gray or tan, with dark brown or black blotches on the back and sides. After a year or two of growth, the color changes to a more uniform black.

Pictures of baby black rats, the blotches are a lot bigger than his, so I'm not 100% sure yet. Going to keep looking!

Well, after some more searching, and it helped to know WHAT to search for, it is indeed a brown/dekay's snake. To be specific, I think it's a Northern Brown snake. An adult, from the description.

Judging from the information I found, it was most likely feeding on the slugs I found in the garden.

I am unsure about keeping it. He/she is cute as can be, but I don't know about legality and I'd have to really research care.

I'd put him back in the garden, he can be your natural plant guard against those pesky slugs.
