Worst Injury You've Ever Gotten?
Just like the title says, whats the worst injury youve ever gotten? (Doesnt have to be herp related).
The only reason i ask this is bc i just had a 2nd ingrown toenail removed the other day and i had to get 4 shots of novacaine from a needle about the size of a turkey baster:oops:. I cant really do needles for some odd reason, felt like i was gunna pass out when i was getting shot up lol, but then once he started the procedure i watched the whole thing no problem. So anyways i kinda felt like a baby for making such a fuss over the whole needle thing, so it got me wondering what other people have had to go through compared to my petty ingrown toenail removals haha. Im always interested in hearing about peoples injuries, thats not weird right? :D
Besides the toenails ive been very fortunate. Never even broken a bone. Ive even totaled a car and walked away unscathed. It was an '88 corolla so basically a tin can without airbags. Me and my brother also did various other dumb things growing up that didnt get us hurt badly either somehow.
*Im not sure if posting pics of this kinda stuff would be against the rules or something so im not gunna until a mod says otherwise.*
Post away people! Lets here some good stories!

Re: Worst Injury You've Ever Gotten?
Nothing too exciting, broken ankle, several bad sprains, and a few self inflicted knife wounds and burns.
-
I am the luckiest unlucky person when it comes to injuries haha
I've been in a plane crash, four wrecks, came face to face with a bobcat over a deer I killed....and came away unharmed from all of these. But I went to go get the mail last year, and as I was walking down my driveway I stumbled, hit my face on the concrete, snapped my arm, and bruised my collar bone. Hahaha FML. :rolleye2:
-
I have a few LOL but my worst was a weight lifting accident I had in 2009. I was a big dude my first year of college. 250lbs and 12 percent body fat. I was pushing myself to hard one day and during a 500lb deadlift my foot slipped and I herniated my L5 disc in my spine. Long story short I ended up in bed for almost 9 months before I underwent a spinal discectomy surgery to remove 50% of that disk. I was close to needing to have those surrounding vertebrae fused.
Took me another year to recover and now I still have back problems.
I have also torn my rotator cuff LOL
-
I dislocated my knee 13 years ago, that was not the most painfully part the painful part was to put it back in place myself , and the 8 hours wait at the ER with a knee the size of a basket ball was no fun either. They gave me 2 ibuprofens, removed a few cc of blood from my knee and sent me on my way home. (UK ER btw)
Good time , apparently I have a very high tolerance for pain.
-
My senior year of highschool my friend rented a limo for us to drive around in and hit different parties. Well you can probably guess what we were doing and i fell out of the limo while it wasnt even moving haha. But i ended up going to the hospital after all the parties and found that i tore a few ligaments in my ankle. It was probably the most painful thing ive experienced once i was sober. I had to wear an air cast boot type thing for 8 weeks but luckily it was off for prom lol
-
Most of my injuries occurred when I was younger, but I broke my ass playing flag football back in '09. Had to walk around with one of those inflatable donuts to sit on for quite some time. Definitely the most uncomfortable injury I've ever had.

Re: Worst Injury You've Ever Gotten?

I had a friend who was benching like 300lbs and dropped it on his head at a weight lifting competition. Blood was coming outta his ear. The two spotters were clearly NOT doing their job, but hes lucky they were able to catch at least some of the weight. A full 300lbs on your head would probably kill a person i would think.

I wasnt there for it but my boss accidentally sliced her wrist open at work once. I work in a kitchen so we get big boxes of aluminum foil rolls. Well she was opening the box or something and it slipped outta her hands and she tried to catch it and the serrated edge on the box sliced her wrist pretty bad. Nasty stuff.

My last active duty deployment was to FOB Lagman in Qalat, Southern Afghanistan. I spent 13 months assigned to an Army unit doing a provincial security mission. In 13 months I manage to hit 4 IEDs.
The one that did the most visible damage was a triple stacked AT-6 mine that lifted our 6 ton up armored HMVEE off the ground and landed us on our lid. That one shattered my right collar bone so badly that it healed non-union, which means the bones did not reconnect (the x-ray is pretty epic). They just kind of float around in there held together by scar tissue. I'm actually 1.6 inches narrower from the center of my sternum to my right shoulder cap than I am from the center of my sternum to the left side.
The damage you can't see is the TBI that I have from the accumulated blast damage to my grey matter. In the long run, it's going to be a lot harder to live with than the collar bone.
But, and this is a huge, monumental but, I consider my deal to be scratch, worthy of no more than a band-aid, compared to how badly some of our guys got hurt. I have zero complaints.

It was a little two seater ultralight plane. Me and my dad were flying for my birthday is 2006 and something went wrong with the engine and it shut off. There was a huge parachute attatched to the plane, so when we realized we couldn't go anywhere else, we pulled the chute. The nose of the plane went straight up and it slowed us down a good bit. Then we landed in some pine trees and crashed our way to the bottom. But both me and my dad were completely unscratched. One birthday I will never forget :colbert:

I had suffered 3 right shoulder injuries in sports, and those moments were terrible. However, I will reconsider. Thanks for your story, and your duty. :salute:

Oh my where do I start ?
Ok, so I've broken both arms, both collarbones, three fingers, broken both of my big toes repeatedly, and my pinky toes too many times to count. Cracked six ribs on my left side and five on my right. Most fun was when my second child actually cracked my ribs while he was in the womb. Three on one side, two on the other. Spending the last month and a half of my pregnancy and going through labor with cracked ribs was no fun at all.
Let's see, I have also dislocated my left hip once, my shoulder twice, broke my left wrist so badly I need a 3 1/2" steel plate and 8 screws to hold it back together. That was just about the worst injury, because they could not do surgery for a week after the break because of swelling. Spending a week with your wrist broken so badly the doctor said it was a miracle I didn't amputate that hand at the wrist wrapped up in nothing but an ACE bandage was just about the longest seven days of my life. I was taking 1000 milligrams of Ibuprofen and 1000 milligrams of vicodin, and it never stopped hurting!
Other than that, my absolute worst experience isn't technically an injury. I had an ovarian cyst the size of an orange rupture while I was at work. The pain was beyond words. It took three EMT tech to pick me up off the floor in the fetal position and lay me on the stretcher. They gave me enough Morphine to put an elephant down, so said my nurse, and I couldn't stop screaming. Thankfully it stopped bleeding on it's own. My doctor said, after he finally figured out what it was, that I probably would have bled to death right there in the ER before they found out what was wrong! :O
So, those sum up most of my battle scars.

x2. But at least you can walk with a busted shoulder, my toes on the other hand... jk jk lol
My friend broke his collar bone trying to land a jump on a bike. You have any pics of the xray slim?
-
Riding my horse in 5th grade I fell off and hit the ground pretty hard. Saw colors and stars and passed out. Ended up at the hospital with a VERY low blood pressure. Come to find out I'd contused one of my kidneys. Meaning I bruised the kidney but the sac around it remained intact. Lots of pain meds and lots of staying still while it healed. Peed blood for probably 6 months and even longer when I would walk too much or exert myself.
Injured my wrist in that fall and it still pops every time I move it a certain way.
Fell off of the same horse a year later and got a concussion. Lots of nausea and throwing up.
On top of those, lots of sprained wrists and ankles. Hyper extended one of my knees. All my joints tell me when it's about to rain. ;)

Let's see, stitches on left eyebrow, stitches on top of my head, broke and dislocated right knee-had a cast from thigh to ankle, hit with a yard stick in my right eye when really young, shot with a bb gun and lost a tooth, stabbed in the back, slipped a disc in my lower back-talk about pain. Plus I have a few injuries from lifting :D

I might have one on the CD the hospital gave me when I retired. It is supposed to have all my medical records on it...to be honest, I've never even opened that disk to see what's on it, LOL Guess I should check that out ;)

It sure doesn't lol
And it was funny because after all of the hectic events taking place within those seconds, when we hit the ground, the first thing that came out of my mouth was "next year I'm spending my birthday with mom" hahaha it was great to know that the first thing out of my mouth was a joke, and hearing both me and my dad laugh was a good sign that we were both okay. :) I am still grateful that we both managed to come away unhurt.

That IED was on the 13th of October, 2007. Some dates you don't forget...

Impaled myself on my bicycle handlebars when I was 15. It went in about 2" below and to the left of my belly button. I lucked up and it pretty much pushed my organs out of the way. I was on BLM land in Wyoming alone at the time. I had to pull myself off of the bike and I walked to the nearest house, which was a good 3 miles away. That one sucked for sure, but I was in shock the whole time and didn't really feel too much pain. I just took my shirt off and held my innards in with it and I was all set. The worst part of the whole ordeal was having to have them pack the healing wound with gauze for weeks. Gave me a nice scar too.
For pain... Kidney stones take the cake, hands down. Those are a whole new animal right there. I've passed them twice. I really don't care to do it again.

Re: Worst Injury You've Ever Gotten?
Slim's my hero. I'll never complain about my time spent out in the gate shack waving traffic through ever again.
I've been pretty lucky as far as injuries. Grew up on a farm, so I tangled with barbed wire a lot. Been kicked or clawed by just about every animal out there. Nothing real bad. I guess my worst one I got on my way to trucking school. The greyhound driver got pulled over for speeding and refused to take the ticket. They hauled him in to traffic court right then and there, leaving the entire busload of people sitting on the side of the highway. I went to step over the guardrail to have a smoke with the group, and cut my shin down to the bone. Had fat and everything hanging out. Paramedics tried to take me to the hospital, but I insisted on just some big bandaids and changed my bloody sock and shoes before crawling back on the bus to berate myself for being so clumsy.
By the time I got done training eight weeks later, that darn thing still hadn't completely healed.
My favorite scar is the one on my hand. I had picked up an injured great horned owl from the vet clinic and brought it back to our rehab barn. I had the feet and was admiring them while cleaning the wound on his wing. That's when he reached up and bit through a welding glove and the meat of the fleshy part below the thumb of my hand. Bless his heart, he died a couple days later.

idk what blm is but i never would have made it 3 miles with my guts hanging out. Even if i wasnt injured the 3 mile walk may have killed me LOL

Well, I remember when I was younger, I was swinging on a skipping rope tied to a branch on a tree in my backyard. The whole backyard had no grass, just cracked bricks. Another tree in the same backyard had made a bunch of bricks uplifted (but not completely) from the ground because of it's huge roots. So I was swinging on this skipping rope, and am having fun when, I trip on the uplifted bricks, (cutting my toes, nothing too much) go flying forward when the rope decides to snap, and I land on my elbows and knees skidding for like a foot and a half on the bricks.... When I looked at my elbows, there was no skin, and the bricks had made deep lines in the muscle. Reaaaally hurt. :tears: Luckily I've never broken any bones though. :)

BLM - Bureau of Land Management; lands, typically out west, that are managed" by the Federal goverment, Department of the Interior, I think? Not positive on the agency but that's what it stands for, anyway.
Slim, thank you and all who are or have served; very much appreciated, to say the least!
I've broken my tibia twice, my femur in two places, six ribs and collapsed a lung while bruising the other...but I saved a ton of money on my car insurance when they dropped me after that crash, lmao! Amen to whoever mentioned being able to laugh about things after the fact; that makes a world of difference.

BLM is basically public land. Wyoming has a lot of open, unowned and unused land that is riddled with trails for biking, 4wheeling, horseback riding, you name it. Three miles very well might kill me nowadays too, but when I was 15 I was in pretty good shape. I hiked and biked everywhere and it didn't phase me.
AKedit: Slim, if I ever make it down to FL I'd like to shake you hand. :gj:
-
I... I...I have broken the tip of my middle finger on my right hand. Thats it
-
Worked construction 13 years, and fell from the 3rd floor. The guys on the site said it looked like I was diving into a pool.
Broke every bone in both arms, 4 years and 10 series later I'm still dealing with it (see the surgeon in July), looking at a full shoulder replacement soon.
Positive side, I lived, didnt break my back or neck, and did it at work.
-
Re: Worst Injury You've Ever Gotten?
I sprained my ankle and tore ligaments in my right foot a few years back. It hurt more then anything I have ever experienced before.
-
Probably the one I was born with, transposition of the great arteries. If that counts. I have had two open heart surgeries, multiple MRIs and heart carbs, and at least yearly cardiac checkups and testing my entire life.
If that doesn't count, then either when I broke my toe, or when I fell in the shower and bruised my tailbone.... Ouch.
-
fractured the tip of my Collar bone requiring 2 operations removing 2 inches of bone each time. 4 years later, still out of work, and have to find a new career due to not being able to do what i could prior.

Sounds like me! I've broken my pinkie playing soccer. A couple severe sprains on my right ankle but nothing that some ice and a few days in a brace didnt fix.
Oh I did get staph from a bicycle accident when I was 15. About 6 surface inches of road rash on my arm that got infected quick!

Ohhh ok gotcha. For some reason i though it stood for Bad Man Land but that would be BML not BLM lol. Ive been to Wyoming once and i remember it being pretty barren, but that was 8 years ago so that could have changed... LOL not.
Also x2 on shaking Slim's hand. If he plays his cards right he may even get a high five outta me :D

Yes, but like I said before, mine was a parking lot fender bender compaired to what the guys on the amputee and burn wards in Walter Reed are dealing with, so when asked, I always say I received one, not earned one.
My Army counterparts refer to the PH as Enemy Marksmenship Medals ;)

I was in a car wreck years ago..totaled a brand new 1999 anniversary Mustang GT. It flipped end for end and rolled 5 times down and embankment. My injuries were 4 broken ribs, dislocated shoulder, broken nose, 3 broken teeth, puncture wound to my left wrist, hyper extended both knees, bruised heart and lung and last but not least a head would that tore my scalp from my right temple across my fore head to my eye and up to about the middle of my head.
It was only by the grace of God we all lived. I was with three friends when it happened. One friend suffered a collapsed lung, broken arm and back (non-paralyzing). Another friend hand many cuts and contusions, the worst of them all wasn't wearing her seat-belt asleep in the back seat. She lost 90% of her teeth, and it took 3 years and over 1/2 a million dollars in hospital bills for reconstructive surgery to repair her injuries to her face.
-
Have had my share of sports related injuries and other wrecks, but most recently was my motorcycle accident back in May of 2010.
Hit some debris on the road causing me to drop and slide the bike. The majority of my left side looked like ground beef and a section of my left arm was badly damaged causing a fair amount of blood loss. I still have some scaring after some minor plastic surgery and a boat load of cortisone shots to break down scar tissue and resolve some keloids that occurred due to improper healing. To this day I still lose feeling in my left arm from time to time and can no longer sleep on my left side.
I haven't been on a bike since, but when I do ride again I'll be sure to wear some protection... No more t-shirt and shorts.
-
Mine doesn't compare at all to IEDs or self-impalements, but I'll mention it anyway.
The worst I've had was when I messed up the rotator cuff in my left shoulder. I was playing racquetball, running full speed toward the wall to try to get to the ball in time to return it. I misjudged the distance to the wall, couldn't stop in time, and smashed my shoulder into it with the full force of 180 pounds of me behind it. There was zero perceived time between smacking into the wall and just being on the floor in pain.
It took probably 2 months to heal/regain full range of motion, and another few months after that before I really started to trust that arm again. To anyone who experiences something similar in the future, I offer this piece of advice: when the doctor asks if you can handle the pain, for the love of all that's good and sweet in the world, don't say yes. I was told to take 3 Advil every 4-6 hours and tough it out (no sling), which sucked a lot. I tried not to move my left arm at all, but of course that's very difficult to do. Some sort of "real" pain killers would have made a big difference.
You never really understand how much you use your non-dominant hand/arm until you can't.
-
My worst injury was in 5th grade. Maria G. broke my heart. :O
-
Nothing too bad. Wrecked my dirtbike on gravel road. Skidded out a few feet on my hands and left elbow. Road rash on hands wasn't too bad but my elbow was ground meat that wouldnt stop bleeding and had to get 12 pieces of pea gravel picked out and stitches at the ER.
My b*tchy quarter horse mare kicked me in the chest once, knocked the breath out of me and gave me a softball size bruise. Glad I took it to the meaty area and not my sternum. Ow.

oh the stupid things I done over my 35 years on this planet lol, I put a nail though my shoe and foot ( coming out the top of the show at firehouse ( pulled it out andwent about my day after some super glue and a good scrubbing lol.( should of seen the guys freaking out ) I pulled the muscle s in my back so much they probably look like some freaky stuff on a xray/mri , I round the shoulder up ( right side) when I had abreak cable snap and lock up front wheel of the bicycle ( only to freshly laid pavement ) walked back home carring a bike with 1 arm working 2 miles at the age of 12. cutting a tree down with a buddy and it twist and fell on me ( 20 ft in the air and have 20 + feet of large pine beat you the entire time it fell does not tickle )
but the one that tok the cake was in school
the art club was painting the school dugouts wit h the school logo , well we were driving all the paint and stuff ( 8 people ) back with the door open in the mini van someone cuts across infront of us running the stop sign. well my head got caught betwen the sliding door and the van frame, with such force they though I was dead, but my hard head proved to be denser than the nater bolt area( I bent the caught/bolt piece to the point they never did line up right to close) a week with blinding head aches and a pop knot the size of a salt shaker was the reason we all joked that my mind does not go to the top floor lol ( that and being born between floors at the hospital lol.)
-
I've got nothing on you guys! Haha, but my worst injury was running around a property where we were building a log cabin a while ago (was maybe 7- 8 years old?). Ended up tripping on something and fell with my throat square on one of the marking stakes. Since it was the square end I didn't impale myself, but makes for a nifty scar and reminder to look where you're stepping

He goes by "The Rat man" on here but he's my brother..last year about this time he ran is left hand through a HighSpeed router while edging some acrylic. About a month before his wedding..
-
Hit by a Carr on my motorcycle at 55 mph and lost my leg half way up the shin down.
-
I almost lost my left thumb, left index finger, and left middle finger to a chainsaw accident when I was 12......to this day, I am glad I didn't lose that middle finger, it is my favorite.....
