    Quirks?
Last night, while feeding my corn Irileth, she exhibited the most hilarious and strange behavior. I only have one snake, so it makes 'feeding day' pretty simple and straightforward. She is in the process of going into shed, so I wasn't expecting her to hit it like she usually does. So she's chilling in the cool side and I hit her dinner with the blow dryer. She parascopes out of her hide (which was adorable) and waits. I offer it. She doesn't strike as usual, so I put it down in her enclosure. She comes over, twitching as if she's interested....

And then proceeds to rub her face and neck all over her meal for a good ten minutes. Then she'd pause, flick her tongue, and do it again. After a short while she eventually grabbed it and pulled it into her hide to snarf.

I double-checked her enclosure temps and made sure the mouse was nice and toasty, so I don't think it was a heat issue. If she hadn't eaten it, I might have been concerned. But she ate it like a trooper. Definitely wasn't a 'wobble' of any kind, as she had perfect motor control and was just rubbing her face on her meal.

Gotta say, it was absolutely weird to watch her do this. Hilarious, but at the same time, I'm like: "What... on earth... are you doing? :weirdface"

Seems like all my animals have weird quirks or behaviors that are either endearing, or briefly mess with my head.

Anybody else have any critters with quirks? I'd be curious to hear if anybody else has animals with interesting behavior traits

This is exactly what Cthulhu, our corn has always done with frozen thawed. That and swallow it butt-first a lot:rolleyes:

My 2010 mojave male is always determined to eat his rats sideways, and usually manages to get them down butt first or sort of diagonally. I gave up on worrying about it after the first couple of times, and now it's just a given that it takes him a good 45 minutes to figure out how to mow down. I (lovingly) call him my short bus snake  he's definitely my friendliest! Kids love him, and my snake phobic sister

My Hognose is a bit of a sadist it seems. That, or is just very 'playful' with his food.

He enjoys deathrolling like a gator, or picking up his prey and throwing it across the tub, and bashing it on the walls and floor. Not to mention actively chases where he believes teh rpey is. Last week he did a few laps in the tub, and then jumped out and latched onto my jeans for about 5-10 minutes, while chewing the entire time.

Other than feeding time, he's as easy to handle as any of my balls. Though definitely one of the quirkiest snakes I've dealt with.

I adore my hog. He's always active, always curious, and always entertaining. Whatever mental block is preventing you from picking one up, I would say just go get one.

Just if you can, pick up a female. That way, IF you don't love the hog, you can send her my way. :D

I dunno it might have something to do with bad publication of the hognose. Every video I see is them being pissed off or I read that they are always pissed or chewing on people pants for 5 minutes. That and I hear bites can be pretty crappy.

Honestly, that's the only time he's snagged me. Usually if he flies out of the tub (bottom tub of the rack), I just lure him into a paper towel roll. He loves those rolls, anywho, I just get him in that, and turn it around so he flies right back into his tub.

The day I picked him up at a show, he flattened his 'hood', hissed at me, and then ate a couple of pinkies. He hasn't hissed or anything since, though it did take about a month for him to stop musking on my hand.

Really docile, except when there's food involved! He's also tried to eat the floor/carpet, my boot, my phone, and the previously mentioned paper towel roll. Crazy guy.

Very nice stuff! I'm a fan of boaphile plastics so far. What kind of morph are you looking for next? I'm going to try and pick up a male firefly, and a female ghost pied if I can find one.

(my apologies to OP for the midnight threadjacking as well.)

My boa enjoys tilting her head at a 45 degree angle.

My normal male has eaten his rats every way a snake is not supposed to. Butt-first, sideways, grabbed by the tail, you name it. He's also struck, constricted, "killed", and then let go and looked for something else to kill. Or he'll do all that while having the head in his mouth, then let go and look for the head again. He's...he's special.

My male BP occassionally decides that the tail of his mouse is the ideal place to grab and hang on. He has also sidled up to a mouse and sneakily snuck a coil over it's back like he wanted to cuddle and then suddenly constricted without ever striking. (This is more interesting when you consider he only eats live.)

    My Dumeril strikes sideways.

And my BCI has a tendency to "reach" for things. Like, when I open the cage she reaches for me to climb out, then she'll come up to inspect my face (I guess to make sure everything's there...:P jk. Still cute though.). And if she's riding on my shoulders/head/pony tail, she will reach for trees if I walk under them. She also has this adorable habit of propelling herself rapidly up the side of the bath tub to lock her head on the edge and pull herself out when she decides she's done. She's adorable. :P

My blood doesn't strike at his food. He's got one of the worst attitudes in my collection and doesn't hesitate about striking at me, but he doesn't strike at his food. He wants the rat laid in his tub so he can sniff it over completely (I joke that he's a USDA inspector) then he'll eat it.

My albino boa usually won't strike at the rat unless you "bonk" her on the head with it. I found this out when she was littler and wasn't the greatest feeder. In frustration one night I bumped the rat against her head and BAM! snarf! Works like a charm now.

My cinny ball wants you to leave the rat in with her and turn out all the lights and leave the room. If you come back in before she's too far gone, she'll spit the head out and won't eat that week. If you catch her late enough though, I think instinct has taken over and she'll usually finish it. It's funny because once or twice I've needed to go back into the snake room for something and she pretty much starts eating as soon as the lights are out.

I think that's about all of the quirks. Except for my pickies who want mice over rats.

Lol, mine does the same thing! I always just assumed it was because they're semi-arboreal when young, which mine is....My ball does the same thing in the bathtub, too. He does NOT like getting wet XD
