Temps listed are wrong, says that they are most active during the day, spreading the cage aggression myth, caresheet is filled with BS, checklist is a money making scheme... Need I go on?

Of course 48 isn't the norm, but they are capable of it.

Honestly, I don't expect much from the big box pet stores, and so far they've never exceeded those expectations.

If a BP can have a SKU, then it must have a Barcode...I want a tattoo of a BP Barcode!

I like the little per stores you find in small towns; they seem to know more because they're smaller and give each other new info everyday and by each other I mean the employees in the one store. :p

Sadly, I "confess" we bought our BP from a smaller pet store. :( That was before I discovered all of you. :) Funny thing is, we were looking for a hamster for my daughter- after MONTHS/Years of begging for one. Then after days of searching various stores, looking at all the "critters" and talking with people, we came home with a BP! LOL

I KNOW that sounds HIGHLY Irresponsible, knowing what I know now. Im Sorry we fell for all the garbage we were fed at the pet stores. BUT we do believe in giving our pets 110%- so we've made what I believe is a very good home for Medusa. :) Hopefully better then that at the pet store, or where she could have ended up.

Now I tell my daughter, that maybe when she's a Teen looking for a job, she can work at one of these pet stores in the reptile dept and really educate people on whats involved in caring for a snake. Then again, she might tell all of them to go to a breeder and not to shop for one at a pet store... so the job might not last to long. lol

Well everyone has their opinions about petstores. I rescued 2 of mine from one that people returned. That's why i've been trying so hard to get a job at one knowing what i know about Beardies and BP's. I actually was shopping in there for something (a gift for a friend's new puppy) When saw a kid and his mom talking baby talk at the Beardies. I told the boy that they are alot of work and proceeded to tell him EVERYTHING he needed for one. You should of seen his look.....PRICELESS! Mom said umm no you're not getting one. Then they asked about the BP's and again i proceeded to tell them EVERYTHING they needed for them....proper diet, heat, humidity, basking spot, hide....everything that petsmart doesn't tell them. I showed him the proper setup and again his mom said no. My friend who works there actually thanked me for saving them from possibly getting a returned possibly mistreated animal. You have to understand it's the big uppity ups that make the rules...not the individual stores although there are some folks that work in these places that REALLY know their animals. JMO.

I got a Mojo and a Spider from a local petco. And there was a Pastel there at the time. There is a "Reptile Rally" they are putting on the first weekend in June and the reptile guy (which I have gotten friendly with) said he is expecting a Enchi and Pinstrpe in sometime this week. I will ask him about the Bumble Bee being "available" at a petco, BUT with all the incorrect stuff they have already up there..... I'd say its just filler. Probably was a Pretty picture of a BB the webmaster found lol

I can vouch for the Petco's (at least in Middle TN) having excellent staff that is very informed and and have alot of knowledge about all reps.

The ONLY problem i have ever had with feeding a Ball in its enclousure was them ingesting a little bit of substrate. Thats it! Most active during the day? Thats funny because i have never seen one of my BPs out during the day and most of the time not at night. Nice find, just goes to show you how much misinformation is really out there. :rage:

I hate both of them because neither of them know anything about reptiles. I went into a petsmart near my home and they had a poor little ball python that looked severely dehydrated and no water in the bowl. The employees are very rude as well. The petco I went into had some boa constrictors that looked very sickly and underfed. Thats why I would prefer local breeders, or small time businesses.

I just went into a Petco today for an emergency bag of aspen (The usual place was on back order unfortunately).

The ball python babies, which looked to be about a month or two old, were infested with mites. I notified the manager and all he said was , "I know" then walked away.
They all must have been pretty uncomfortable since all of them were right up in front of the glass trying to escape.

The Petsmarts in my area are pretty good and knowledgeable to some extent. Their animals seem healthy and their cages are always clean and have food/water at least.

And surprisingly a local small private pet store is really horrifying. The store always smells like sewage. The birds are kept in dark tiny cages with one or no perch. The reptiles share enclosures with one another if possible (Like all the lizards are in one tank and all the snakes are in another). And they promote puppy mills by selling mill pups and jacking up the price of 'designer' mutts. The only animals in good condition are their rodents and rabbits.

Wow, that's some messed up crap.

At our local pet store they have an adult ball python that has stuck shed all over his or her body. It's really sad, but I don't feel like I'm in a position to be telling them how to run their store. Would you folks say something about it?

The owner is not very approachable either...

I regularly do say something when I see obviously sick animals or husbandry that looks dangerous. I try to be polite as possible (a work in progress for me) and explain what might be wrong.

If you chose to mention something like this to store employees, expectation management on your part is important. More often than not, the employee or manager you speak with will be polite but dismissive. They rarely jump right up and fix whatever you bring to their attention.

While everyone know how much most hate Petco and Petsmart, does this really surprise anyone at this point that they have it all wrong? I have applied at some hoping I could help the animals but it was a no go, hired a girl who thought Ball Pythons ate Crickets. Go figure.

Well I guess it depends on staff. The Petco here in Olympia, WA is run very well. The Snakes where the best and the Man who was running them was and is a very knowledgeable and is a breeder. Thanks to him and the staff, we where just not sold a snake until we under stood what it takes and he felt that we could to the right thing for the snake. I would say 85% of the staff knows what they are doing but I am sure this is not the normal.

Diurnal - who wants a pet that will sleep all day that they'll never see?
Temperature: 72-85 - most homes fall within this range?

It seems they're trying to make them more appealing by flat out lying, this is far worse than just being misinformed. At least the latter is accidental and can be fixed. Fabricating false care information to make more sales is utterly disrespectful not only towards their customers but their stock as well. It is ultimately the animals who suffer, how can you call yourself a petstore while promoting animal suffering?

I agree with you. The VP who is in charge of the care sheets needs to be let go. And someone who cares about the animals needs to put the right info there and not the bottom line and the cash flow of the company. They will make sales still just tell the truth and the new owner of the pet can have the right care sheet to take care of his or her new family member.
