    Hawaiian Herps!
I recently took a vacation on the big island and ran across a few herps. Not shown is a LARGE sea turtle that I came across while snorkeling (no underwater camera).

These turtles were resting on a secluded, small island. We had to swim across a small channel to get to them and unfortunately scared a couple of them back into the ocean.

This little guy (he was about 2 feet long from tail to head) was in a tide pool that may have become stuck during low tide. I'm sure he could have crawled out to the ocean so I'm sure it wasn't a big deal, but a lot of people got some good pictures of him.

One of the cool Green Anoles in one of the gardens we visited.

These geckos were EVERYWHERE. It's interesting how the colors didn't come back on his re-grown tail.

    Thanks for looking!

I know, I was really surprised how much their colors pop when they're wet. I think part of it was that it was a young turtle, too.

Those are some great photos. I think sea turtles are such graceful animals...

*sigh* I miss Hawaii so much.

I spent a day sitting and watching the turtles sun on Punalu'u beach, and watched them playing in the surf one afternoon at lunch at a different place. They're one of the coolest animals on the planet.

Love the day gecko, those little guys are so cute!

I miss Hawaii so much. I used to go there once a year with my family. The problem is my family is in general morbidly obese and can't enjoy the islands like they should be able to. I was actually made fun of on our trip there over winter break for working out on a vacation.

Thanks! I actually brought two cameras so I'm not sure which pictures were taken with which camera. I had a Canon Powershot S95 and a Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel XS). The Rebel is getting kind of old, but I'm holding out for the Canon 7D II.

The S95 and now the S100 are great little point and shoot cameras. Even cell phone cameras are producing great pictures nowadays.

This is only the second time I've been to Hawaii (the first time was in Kuaui), but I'd love to go back to the big island again. It's incredibly diverse and plenty of stuff to do. I'm not really the lay-on-the-beach type, so this island was great for hiking, caving, snorkeling, etc.

    Great photos!!

I was in Hawaii in November and was fortunate enough to see some sea turtles also, such beautiful animals.

Didn't see too many lizards and wasn't able to catch any on camera. That is a great shot of the gecko, were you able to get up close an personal or where you using a longer lens?

EDIT: Saw your post about the camera used.... =)

I grew up in Hawaii, and my wife and I try to get back each year. There is a turtle beach in Haleiwa, to the left of the park, and there are turtles up on the beach nearly every day. We always like to get out there and take a look. Really awesome animals.

This juvie was right at the shore break, eating growth off a rock.

Pretty cool, Robyn! I didn't get to see any turtles that big on the shore, but I think the one I saw while snorkeling was about that size. They are really cool animals. BTW, were they nesting there or just taking a break?

@Don - I was there on vacation. Spring break was a good time to go because the kids were out of school and apparently it wasn't as crowded in Hawaii as it is during the winter or summer.

The turtles come up to bask on the sand for hours and hours in the afternoon. There have been large turtles every time we have visited that particular beach, which is a little bit hidden, but not hard to find.

Nice shots, I'm headed to Maui in 2 months :-) hopefully I have better success with herps there than I did in the rainforests of Panama this past November / December. . .
