Mystery egg, help identify please

I found this egg a week or two ago in a stream and I have no idea what it is. It is the same size and shape as a leopard gecko egg is but with a harder shell. I candled it when I first found it and it didn't look fertile, but now it has the little target veins. It is in the incubator that is set for female leopard gecko eggs. Can anyone identify it?

if and when it hatches. Be careful. you never know what is inside.

Yeah, it was floating a little bit off the bottom. I really didn't think it was fertile because of that, and because I carried it around for more than an hour, but I guess they are more hardy than people give them credit for :rolleye2:

I think it's some kind of snake or maybe a broadhead skink. The only venomous thing it could be would be a coral snake, but I think I'm too far north. I'll be careful anyway.

Musk turtle? I rescued one off the road and put her in a dog bowl (I know, random) and she laid an egg that looked similar to that.

The world may never know... Unless you do DNA testing on it.

Lol, I think it is a musk turtle egg! It even has the white stripe . Luckily female leopard geckos incubate at about the same temps as they do. :P

Hmmm...Interesting. Looks like an infert to me though. Also...Why would it be in the water if it was fertile? Sometimes animals know when an egg is infertile and they will reject it. Can you post a pic of it being candled? i hope it does hatch for you!

I think it fell in the water or got washed away. It is definately fertile and it has grown since I found it. I also read that the white strip means they're fertile.
Here is a pic of it being candled. It is pretty young and all I have to candle things is a flashlight, so it doesn't show up very well. If you look closely at the middle you can see the veins

Interesting. I would have thought that being in the water would have "drown" the egg.

Turtles sometimes get confused or delayed and start laying in the water. If you pull the eggs out soon enough they tend to do fine.

It still looks infertile to me. If there are veins, they must be pretty week. Then again...I've never worked with turtle eggs. Good luck with it!

I'm going to watch this thread and see what it is, as long as something is growing inside. This is neat. Found by the stream doesn't mean under the water...keep us up to date.:D
