Snake Sausage?
Has any one heard of snake sausage
I just can't see this happening I love the line
"developed specifically for meat-eating reptiles, and is a preferred diet for those who dislike feeding their animals either live or frozen mice or rats"
I just don't see any ball python eating this stuff. I see a picture of a gaboon viper with on but I still can't see it happening. I also heard its cost is higher then feeding a rodent to your snake like it should eat.
-
Right... because a beef sausage is nutritionally the same as eating a whole rodent.......
Plus there is no way I could see most snakes having any interest at all in eating this.
Also according to their instructions you only heat them up to room temperature.....
-
my mind is blown!! wow. (I'm in the process of feeding my bp's) All of them ate. I'd hate to waste money on these, and have to throw them out, cause I ain't eating them haha.

Re: Snake Sausage?
They've been around for a while. I've heard that they are expensive comparatively speaking, but have heard that at least some colubrids will successfully feed on them. I wouldn't think beef would be any more or less nutritionally valuable, because other than that snakes eat protein, we don't know their nutritional requirements.

The best way to describe what is going through the snakes mind when you offer it one of these can only be shown by the meme :

Re: Snake Sausage?
What? Why? Because processed foods are always much healthier than raw foods?
I am so sick of people trying to impose our disgusting eating habits on our pets. Just because we eat way too much way too often doesn't mean we need to impose the same on our pets who have no choice in the matter.

Re: Snake Sausage?
I believe it was Petsmart that pushed these when they first started selling snakes (corns) years ago. They weren't big on selling snakes that ate rodents so they required them to be fed the sausages and told the customers that's what they ate. Needless to say, I had plenty of customers come into the store I was managing at the time that couldn't get there baby corn snake they bought at Petsmart to eat. How shocking that it usually only took one attempt with a pink to get them going.

Yeah there's a thread on here somewhere that was started not long after they started marketing those. I know none of my snakes would want that. It's ridiculous!

How gross! I would never even consider feeding those to my snakes, and I'm pretty sure most snakes wouldn't take it. Rodents are fine with me.
-
After reading this thread I had a quick chat with some of my problem feeders and they said don't bring that snausage near me, lol.
But for real... I would never substitute my rats for some sort of processed sausage. And if pet owners are not okay with feeding their snake a rat or mouse, maybe they should have chosen a different pet, just my 2 cents.

I have a hard enough time getting a couple of mine to eat F/T...there is no way they would even look twice at a Snausage :colbert:
-
I don't have any 1st hand experience, but about 7 years ago my best friend took his daughter to a community class on reptile ownership. They actually took the class twice because my friend had a snake in college and it died suddenly on him and he was still really worried it was something he did. (It was before I met him, dunno.) Anyways the class was otherwise good, promoted the "beginner three" and had a session on each reptile. During the cornsnake section they talked about the sausage, but my friend was told there was a brand that was 100% rodent(s) - just that it was ground bones, internals, and flesh in a more "kid friendly form." We all thought it was weird at the time and sorta missed the point about education about reptiles and prey. :confuzd:
/She ended up thinking snakes where "creepy" and geckos "would fall apart" and has been caring for her beardie since then.

Who is this "we" you're referring to?

Just generalizing. Don't worry, I know bp.netters don't make the list of irresponsible pet owners. :) It just upsets me to see so many morbidly obese dogs out there, and I have met a few people who overfeed their snakes.

I tried youtubing this... WOW nothing

Same here!

one of the pythons books i got years ago, showed this as a viable option for snakes, never looked into it though. it is hard and expensive enough to get live food around here, last thing i need is snakes that only eat snausages.
-
Omg i love that stuff. Snake sausage with my bacon and eggs in the morning. Thats how a REAL herper starts their day!
-
The main problem I see with this is that it's not a food source a snake would take without tease feeding and it would fall apart. I feed my garter pinkies from Gourmet Rodents that you can purchase at PEtCo
-
My gator would probably scarf them down. Then again, he would pretty much eat anything anyway

It's not just cow versus rodent (although I think that is important nutritionally), it's also the organ meat, bones, and hair that contain vital nutrients and minerals. Snakes need the whole animal for full nutritional value.
The Intuits were able to survive almost entirely off meat (whereas the Europeans quickly got scurvy without fresh fruit, a commodity lacking at the North Pole) because they prized the organ meat (chock full of important nutrients) and gave the nutritionally worthless steak cuts to the dogs.

I have pet rodents, mice, hamsters, gerbil, rabbits and I love them and they are quite spoiled.
But that is not a reason to feed my snakes something that is not natural! My snakes will stick with their rodent diet and they will thrive and grow!
Look at the obesity rate now, everything we buy has additives and junk added to it. Young kids have diabetes now...

Re: Snake Sausage?
List of fails on this page:
1. "Never feed a snake in its shedding cycle" What, are the sausages going to attack him because he can't see/attack them quick enough?
2. Third ingredient "Beet pulp" I hope this is a typo, but even if it is WTF is beef pulp?
3. It does not contain meat byproducts... Ok, so it doesn't contain the things a snake needs to survive.
4. ...or grains... That's right, it contains beet pulp instead.
5. Also contains flaxseed meal. Isn't that a grain?
6. Chlorine chloride, something something chloride, and other stuff I can't pronounce and put into my swimming pool.
P.S. I am reconsidering the hotdog I just ate...

It's not just that, its that Americans aren't eating real food anymore. When I was a kid my mom cooked dinner every night, went to the grocery store and came back with some lettuce, flour, spices, steak, etc. The problem is that people aren't actually cooking anymore, they're eating... Hell I don't even know what the stuff is. These things wouldn't be a problem if real food was available at a reasonable price and people actually got off their butt and cooked something edible.

Idk why none of you guys can get your snakes to eat these. Mine all love 'em. I just sprinkle some MSG on them and they all gobble them down and beg for more. Y'all must be doing something wrong:rolleyes: I usually give each of them a couple French fries afterward. :D
