Phil put away a rat last night, and this evening he's been quite lazy. I think he feels like I do after a really big meal. He's got his head in one hide, his tail in the other, and is stretched out with a rat sized bulge in his middle.

He reminds me of the old Alka Seltzer commercials where the guy laments, "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!".

Hee hee... yeah, right now I figure it's best for him if I just leave him alone and let him relax and digest his meal, though I keep wanting to reach in there and straighten up that rumpled newspaper.

What size rat did he get to eat? Have you weighed him recently?

It was supposed to be a small rat. They always look so much bigger when compared to the snake's head.

Haven't weighed him recently, though I think I will in a couple of days after he's had a little more time to digest his meal. He's 5 1/2 months old, and slimmer than Magellan who's just over 4 months. I had them both out to show my son-in-law last night, and when they're close together, the size difference is a lot more noticeable. Part of it may be that the folks who bred Phil raised feeder mice for a business, so he would have been getting mice before he arrived. The people I got Magellan from said he was eating rats already, so he likely was getting larger feedings than Phil was.

It amazes me sometimes how big a rodent they can pass through that slender neck!

Like I say, it amazes me what they can swallow. He doesn't seem to be distressed about it at all. He's now peeking out from the one hide and moving about just fine.

No kidding! All my '03's have successfully promoted themselves to small rats. I usually only weigh them after a big dump, otherwise, you don't get their "empty" weight. But sometimes I do it just to get the main idea. Out of 7 '03's, the smallest is 304 grams and the biggest is 442 grams :mrgreen:

oh i didn't say there was anything wrong with it. as far as i'm concerned, if it was too big they wouldn't eat it. peanut eats rats that are way larger than his body with no trouble at all...

After he ate that rat, I decided I really need to make him a new shallow hide. He crawled under the one he has, and it was almost like a kid playing turtle. He was lifting the hide and moving it about as he settled into a comfortable position.

I think I'll fire up the table saw this afternoon and make him one like I made for Magellan. He needs a little more room to grow under his hide. ;)
