    New Mouse Colony (DUW)
I tried rats and never had real success in the set-up I used, so I decided to go with mice until I can build my own rat rack. It all started when I bought several feeder mice, and realized one was pregnant! She had that litter of PEW babies, and now the two girls both just gave birth. Six in the first litter, 7 in the second! The father is brindle, and so far I love the patterns on the pups.

I'll be holding back all the females to complete my group.

    First, the breeders:

Don't mind me, I love naming things.

It's so rewarding, especially seeing the pattern come in! I love them. :) This is my first 'official' set of babies from my own pairing.

I just found out my local pet store only sells female mice. I've been waiting for babies...now I know why I don't have any...lol. Great pics. I have a interesting mouse that is like a titanium brown bronzish colour. I call her Sonic, and no way is she seeing my bp's. Way to cool a colour. Loves being held too. I'll try and post a pic of her.

    Cheers!

Nice! Looks like a dove color to me.

Sad to say the second litter of 7 didn't make it. :O One of them went psycho and decided to kill them all except for the older 5 (I fed off the deformed runt). I'm speechless. I suspect it was the PEW that has started running in circles lately, killing off all but her own. ARGH. I'm letting Ez adopt them.

if you're like me, and get them from a local store to breed your own, maybe the store is only selling you the same sex mice. Which I just found out the other day after a couple of months waiting. My rats are right now, 3 adult males, and a female. I have bred the female to one male, she made 10 pups first litter, giving me 6 females. Of those 6, I will give to #2 male to bred. Those that give me females, I'll give to #3. No inbreeding. The one main female, just gave me a litter of 12, and now I'll cut her off breeding. I'll just do two litters per female. But two litters over a 20 total is amazing. I'll have to pick up a co2 to get the sized rats I need to feed. The start up cost was big, luckily a friend gave me two cages, and the first breeding pair. I've spent a $100 on the other cages, and one male rat, not including food. Local pet stores charge $9-22 for live rats. So, thankfully I have about 10-14 new females :-D Now, for those darn mice lol. Gotta find a male.

AND..the remaining five are all male (although pretty satin brindle males)..:(

    /cries on the floor

It looks like a trip to the nearest store (an hour away) to stock up on more mice!

Well yes, but these guys are 2 weeks old. I use the absence of nipples, since their parts look the same at a young age.

For those having trouble breeding mice. When I was looking for my first colony, I came to find that a lot of pet stores ended up having either all males or retired breeder females. Young females were harder to find. So even if you have the correct sex ratio, you may not have females that can still produce. So stick with it until you find some good breeders and then hold back for future breeders. I've been doing that with great success.

To the OP: I love how your mice are in all different colors. We only have white ones here in NJ.

I'm lucky that the store I go to gave me all young girls! Technically almost too young to be considered 'adult'. And yes, I kept four nice breeders from a group I got in a trade/sell. :) One of the males is satin, too!

Just added 9 girls to the group. NOW let's see some babies. :D
