Ok, last night I did my twice a week run to the pet store to pick up some live mice for my picky eaters. When I walked in, I saw a big (4'x4'x2-3') chameleon, or "reptarium" I think they are called.. FULL of 3-4' ball pythons. The guy told me that the pet store owner ordered a batch of CAPTIVE BRED HATCHLING ball pythons to sell. They were very confused when they got the shipment in, with obviously, even to the untrained eye, NO hatchlings. The poor bp's were pounded with ticks the size of your pinky fingernail. Some of them had mouthrot, most of them had scale rot. There were, I'd say, 15. Well, anyway, the petstore guy said 6 of them were dead when they came in to the store :(
He knew how much I was into ball pythons, and asked me if I wanted one (for free) before they got shipped off back to their death. (Because they were sending them back ASAP). I felt so horrible for them, and of course I wanted to take one home, but the problem with spreading diseases to my CB babies went through my mind. I had to figure something out that would settle carefully for everyone. WELL, needless to say, I am a proud mommy of hopeful success story. =) In the laundry room (separate from my house), I set up a 4'x 2' x 2' rubbermaid with a heating pad on one end with a hide, water bowl, and nice clean paper towels, She also got soaked in the bath tub with some soap for a couple hours last night, and Black knight sprayed once she got into her home. She is going to the vet on Saturday. I couldn't help it, you guys! She is so friendly, too; and to think she was probably going to die! :(
I'll get pics up ASAP, as soon as she settles in. :)
Just had to share, sorry for the BLABBING!!

Would you??
You need to have a better attitude about this. First, rub vasaline on the ticks, bathe them for mites. Soak it in pedialyte, and make sure it is hydrated. Give it a day of pure relaxation with a bit higher then average heating. And try feeding it a big rat, just in case bring a gerbil. After two weeks there is no doubt in my mind she will stabalize and be just fine. As well as make an excellent addition.
Please snap a pic so we can see just how bad of shape she is in :(
-
My bad, I thought you said she was probly going to die, as in will end up dead.... Is she fine, or kinda iffy?
-
Oh, she was one of the better looking ones. I didnt't write my whole process of last night down because I didn't want to bore everyone. Don't think I didn't take my call and do what I needed to do about the ticks, etc. She has a very slight case of scale rot, (only on about 2 scales) but needless to say, it's still there. She didn't have any signs of an RI, but again, she is going to the vet on saturday. I'm going to be spending lots of moola on her, but it will be well worth it to me. I'm getting her flagyl and Panacur for starters, Hopefully she gives me a little dump of the rump (lol, a poo in other words) before Sat., but you never know about these things.
She won't die, she isn't in as bad as shape as some of the others. Especially now that anything and EVERYTHING she has wrong with her, is going to be treated as best as I know how to (well, mostly the vet, lol).
And I'm not going to feed her until after the vet trip; I wouldn't want any regurges from stress. She had a LONG journey here, ya know.

I thought you'd just picked her up, lol.
-
Congrats and good luck!! Good thing you came along for her and gave her a second chance. Any name ideas yet?
-
Nope not yet. Once she gets settled in, there is no doubt in my mind she will have some wacko personality; so it'll be easy to name her, LOL.
-
good luck with her,
and nice way to expand your collection

Congrat's on the addition......Maybe a good name would be Chance, as in 2nd chance.....Hope every goes well
-
Oh, good idea Iron head, I'll think about it... :)
-
That's wright that could be the perfect name for her. That is if she is really a she. LOL
Jesús
-
I know, I just keep calling her a she; I don't know why. She seems sort of feminine, I guess. :P
-
Congrats, and thank you for taking such good care of her. let us know what the vet says.
Thanks

The new snake luck streak continues. Congrats :).
-
send all the others to me i'll pay for shipping!!!
i can't let all those snakes die and not try to do anything about it
-
I know what you mean pimp_n_python. I wanted to take them all, but I was really asking for it just taking the one. (As far as moeny for the vet, ROOM in the racks, etc). But at least I feel better that I am helping one.
-
And I commend you on doing so. Hope this one turns out to be the perfect pet.
-
pimp is right, that's half the reason I got bubba. the girl who previously owned him straight up said to me "i am not giving him the proper care." how do you turn your back on defensless bp?
im proud of you jennifer.
-
Let me know if I can do anything, I have a spare 30 gallon tank and a 15 gallon tank already setup. I was gonna get a couple more in a month or so, but would be glad to help save some.
As pimp_n_python stated and i agree with, I'll pay shippin if the pet store wants to get rid of them to a good home. I know i'm rather new at this, but we have a 1/2 way decent repti vet in teh area and he/she'd get all the attention they needed. I can house two maybe three, just let me know.

RUDE AWAKENING...............
i wasn't joking either
i'll take at least 3 nurse them back to health and sell them for whatever it cost me to rehibilitate them (to good homes obviously)
I can't just let innocent animals die when theres a slight hope that i can save some
anyway let me know

That'd be a long way to ship a snake that's already in terrible health, think about it. Want to risk it?
-
It's a major risk, especially at this time of year... If one thing goes wrong, when the snake is in such poor condition, it's all over.
-
I admit, it was a HUGE relief to see Bubba active when he arrived. I actually anticipated a half-dead snake... being as it was snowing outside when he arrived... just make sure you guys know what you're getting yourselfs into.
-Will
-
I don't know if the pet store would let me take anymore- and just like ballkingdom said, it is a huge risk this time of year. I'll think about it, though.
-
IMO its worth the shot. If I was dying and the only decent chance i had to live was to put me in a box and ship me across the country to someone who gave a **** u think i'd mind being put in a box?
-Chris
Edited by RPlank for content.
-
Unless ya don't really care if u end up in a trash can instead of a nice warm tank with food and love. But... again thats just my opinion.
-
I completely understand...that's why I'm going down there as soon as I can.
Jennifer :)
-
it might not be the best idea for me to take them cause i live in Canada Ontario its entirely up to you but the offer is still there
I am willing to give it a shot if its the only chance they have
-
Andariel, watch the language.... again.
-
ya the swears aren't needed
keep in mind that lots of children frequent this site and dont' need to be subjected to cussing
-
I'm here to help if needed.
Is it accually garunteed that the BP's will die when they are sent back.
If so you may want to try and find out who their distributor is. That way you may be able to do a bit more research into said company. It is completely up to you, but I know that this situation has pulled at your heartstrings. I hope for the best for said BP's and congrats on your new one. It's wonderfull that you took her / him in
Thanks
Rusty

Rusty- It's certainly not guaranteed that they will die when shipped back (wherever they are going). But if you think about it, who knows where the distributor is, if they are even on the western side of the US. (More than likely, though). And being shipped around AGAIN with un-heated trucks/planes, poor ventilation, crammed together in a little box, laying in their own parasite infested feces, I kind of gave it the benefit of the doubt. It's sad to say. They may not die, though. Considering thousands of bp's are imported, and I'd say half of them make it here alive. But, just in that one shipment, there were 6 dead bp's. That tells me the others may not make it. :(
But you never know about these things.
-
Oh, and I'm going down there tonight for anyone interested. :) Wish me luck, but don't count on anything. :(
Jennifer
-
post up when you get home!! :)
-
Ok, I just got home from the petstore. :sigh: They were all gone, I guess earlier tonight someone came and got them all to be sent back to wherever they need to go. That makes me so mad, because I called them earlier today to see if they were still there, and he said they weren't being picked up until tomorrow afternoon. I'm so mad. I'm sorry guys. BUT at least I am going to be able to save one :) I'm VERY happy about that. :D:D

poor snakes
u did more than alot of ppl would have done
whatta shame
-
Sorry for the language, that slipped out :) I'm trin real hard to control my fingers on here. But I get real emotional (not liek cry emotional, just urgent kinda ya know?) when it comes to animals not being treated right, and if I can do somethin to save them I'll do whatever I can to atleast try.
Sorry to hear about the snakes, maybe whoever recieves them at their new destination might have a warm spot for them and take them in instead of killin them. But its outta our hands now i guess.
BTW, news on my front... the ASPCA came today and rescued two yellow labs and a beagle from my neighbors house after numerous complaints by me and a couple other neighbors to the local PD and to the ASPCA. These dogs have been outside for atleast 4 years, 24/7/365 in teh snow/rain/cold/heat with nothin but food. No love and care at all, and because of that they're not vicious but very PO'd. I've gone down a couple times to try and spend some time with them but the labs usually try to nip at me, and the beagle just runs in circles because its in a 6'X4' pen since its been a puppy. Atleast now their with people who care.
-Chris

yay for the little doggies :).
-
Not sure about where you are, but in our area, the law requires that outside dogs have a shelter that meets these criteria:
Minimum of 3 walls.
Solid roof overhead.
Floor raised off the ground beneath.
I.E., you cannot just provide a simple "lean to" for the dogs, or a bottomless "box" which shields them from above, but still makes them lay on the bare ground. We have 4 dogs (at least if you consider the chihuahua a dog... I think the jury is still out on that one), and 3 doghouses. 1 is a large home-built job which can easily accomodate two or three at a time, and the other two are the plastic doghouses you can get from WalMart for about $50. When I started figuring out how much it would cost me to buy wood to build a doghouse, plus the time, we decided the store bought ones were a better option (besides, the plastic roofs are easier to keep water proof than a wooden homebuilt roof).
We have a large back yard that the dogs have free run in. While two of the dogs are getting old and don't play much anymore (the one's idea of playing now is to take the toy and go lie down under the tree with it), our Australian Shepherd gets at least a few minutes of playing "fetch" whenever one of us goes into the back yard. If we're putting clothes on the line or something, he will keep dropping whichever toy he grabbed at our feet and looking at us, waiting for us to throw it, kick it, or whatever to send it flying across the yard for him to chase.
I can't imagine a home without a dog...
-
*Pics* of the import baby :)
I have 3 chihuahuas, so if you dont count chihuahuas as dogs, I guess I dont have any dog's then.
But here in this part of Illinois the only laws here is if your dog get's turned in for running loose they will fine you. Other than that, there really is no law. There probably is in the book's, but they are not inforced, unless you are a bull terrier, then you are guilty without doing anything.
-
Hard to say. I'd never heard of the laws concerning the doghouses until someone reported us to Animal Control that our dogs didn't have any "shelter". I was baffled by that, since I'd always made sure the dogs had someplace where they could get out of the sun or rain. The Animal Control Officer (who was actually very nice about it), explained that the law required more than just some shady spot and/or a roof from the rain.
As to the chihuahuas, either my wife or I will make some comment about the dog, to which our 19 year old son will reply something to the effect of, "That's not a dog. It's an overgrown rat." I guess it all depends on who you ask...
-
The beagle is the only one with a "house"... its got a lil wooden shack inside its raised pen for it to go in, the labs were both jsut tied out. the one to a tree the other to a 4' runner. Just glad they are outta those peoples hands and into somewhere warm and will get the treatment/attention they needed.
-Chris

amen to that
please tell me those people are never aloud to own an animal again
