Help!!!
Ok, long story short I rescued this hatchling and re-homed it to a friend of mine. She calls me saying it has a bad shed so I come over and remove the leftovers, including retained eye caps (gave her a good soak and it all came off in the soaking tub) Snake looked fine. 4 days later she calls again saying the snakes eyes are crusty and blue again. I advised her to up the temps and humidity and take the snake to the vet asap if it looks that bad... Next day she calls and says she got the crusty eyes off herself and sent me these pictures... I offered to take her back and get her to a vet once I am back in town but for now I dont know what to tell her... I think she might have removed the new eye cap :(
The First Photo is how she looked before I found her a new home :/ which I really regret doing now...

That poor snake looks awful :( I'd take her to the vet asap and would advise this girl to do that NOW (or you to take her back and have her help with the vet costs).
Personally to me it looks like actual eye damage too: like she rubbed the eye too much or too hard and damaged them.

Re: Help!!!
Thats what I was thinking... an I beyond worried now and really wish she would take it to a vet, but apparently she can't afford it... I want to say why have it if you can't afford to take care of it!!!!! I will be back in town tuesday and I really hope she can make it till then :(
-
That is horrible and looks extremely painful.
It does look like the live eye cap membrane could have been removed. I always say, don't mess with the eyes even with a bad shed and retained caps... The caps will usually always come off during the next shed anyway....
If she can't afford a vet visit, she shouldn't own an animal... They're like kids. Parents will take an ill child to a doctor....Pets are no different. That is horrible... You should tell her and maybe she'll grow up a little.
I would advise to keep the snakes' eyes moist and to prevent it from drying out since they can't blink and there's no eye cap (assuming) left. I'm not sure how, but I bet a more experienced member will chime in... (maybe some non pain relief neosporin? I know you can do this to mammal eyes...not sure about snakes)

I wouldn't put anything else on those eyes. She needs a vet ASAP. The times that I've seen the living cap removed I've seen the snakes go blind because of it. The snake obviously needs an appt. I always tell people to just let the eyes be. Good humidity and patience would have solved everything.

Omg the poor snake!! It looks skinny and dehydrated too! I would be taking that snake back and getting it to the vet ASAP. I don't think I would let her have it back either. Please keep us up to date.

Re: Help!!!
I'm canceling plans and getting her late tonight and to the vet ASAP, and yes she is staying with me permanently after tonight. I feel awful that if I had just kept her none of this would have happened :tears:

Those pictures hurt my heart. I hope you're able to get her back and that she does ok...

Re: Help!!!
Hi,
I'm sure I've missed something.
That snake still has a full shed stuck to it.
Apart from the eyes where it looks like she has indeed ripped the spectacle off. :(
I wouldn't have let it go either - simply because I love the head/ neck marking.
The poor snake.

Your friend has most likely blinded that BP by pulling off the living caps, so you'll need to be prepared to deal with that. Several keepers have blind BPs in their collections, so it can be done successfully.
Also, if you keep this thread alive and document everything this animal goes through with Vet visits and such, I will link to it every time someone wants to mess around with stuck eye caps...It could save some snake from a similar fate in the future.
-
That's so awful. I'll never understand why some people are willing to take responsibility for a life which they then don't respect, or care for correctly.
I really hope this situation works out for the best and the person learns something.
Poor baby :(
-
Oh that poor thing, definately looks like damage is done, such a pretty snake too. I hope everything works out ok. I would get him to a vet ASAP.

Re: Help!!!
Oh the poor baby. Please get her to the vet and update us of his/her condition. What a beautifuly marked snake! I hope it makes a full recovery. Just like not everyone should be a parent...not everyone should be a "snake parent" either. Good Luck.

Re: Help!!!
Yes, please do send those pics to anyone who decides to mess with eyes...as in an inexperienced first time snake owner pulling and prodding as this friend of mine did. I got her back today gave her a good soak and took her to a vet, and indeed! the eye spectacles have been ripped off, good new is she is already recovering according to the vet. This snake will never ever again leave my sight. Blindness is obviously a possibility and almost inevitable it looks like but I will update the thread as she progresses.

Tears came to my eyes seeing those pictures, no joke, that's just terrible. I don't mean to offend your friend or anything, but the only way I can describe this is sick. I'm glad to hear she's getting better though, my heart goes out to her and I wish you and her the best :)

I'm wondering the same thing.
To the OP. How did your friend send you those pics of a snake with a full stuck shed 4 days after you were there and you said you soaked it and removed the stuck shed? It doesn't make sense how those pics could be from 4 days after you removed the stuck shed.
-
Maybe its the nights messing with me, but that doesn't even look like the same snake comparing pic 1 and 4

I could be wrong, just looks like the markings are lower on pic 2
Picture 1 was taken 05/08/2010 with a Samsung TL100
Picture 2 has no details
-
^ looks like the same snake markings are at the same spot..
im no expert at snakes but like someone mentioned it still looks like a full shed i dont get how four days later a snake is in shed again after you guys removed it.. poor snake hope it doesnt go blind over irrisponsible owners..
-
this is horrible, i would most likely say the snake will be blind after the vet visit. good luck.
-
Even if you're not very knowledgeable, that snake is clearly ailing. Where did the friend get this idea to mess around with its eyes? That was piss poor advice to give an amateur, whoever gave it. People who aren't prepared for a vet visit for their pet should get a hermit crab and when they fail at husbandry they can just let it die (incoming flaming from 'all creatures great and small' types).
Good luck. That is a beautiful snake. When I saw the first pic I thought it may be some kind of morph.
-
Like everyone else I'm shocked. I know very little about this hobby, as I'm still very new to it, and even I can see that the eyes are damaged. It would crush me if I saw my baby in that condition and I'm sure your heart is aching as well. Please do keep us informed of her progress.

Like everyone else I am horrified by the damage done to her eyes, but I too believe she has a fully retained shed in those pictures.
If that isn't a retained shed, I don't what to know what she applied to that snake to make it look that way.
Can you get us some updates pictures ? Does she still look all dull and wrinkly like she still needs to shed ?
My het pied female, who is hopefully going to have eggs for me soon, has one blind eye like this. My husband decided she had a retained eye cap a while back when I was not home. He then proceeded to remove it. He was all proud of himself until I got home and he told me. As soon as I saw her I knew what he had done and I proceeded to chew him a new you-know-what. He doesn't mess with the snakes when they shed after that, he lets me do it. Toki will always be blind in that eye, but it doesn't affect her much.

We took in a rescue some time back that was in shed and a few days later went back into shed. So it can happen, especially if they are injured or sick. Also consider the possibility that the OP might have only got one of the stuck sheds off the first time around and didn't realize there was another stuck one.

Re: Help!!!
did you take the snake to the vet already?
-
Oh man the poor thing looks terrible. She really needs to soak that snake! Maybe once the snake is soaked enough to get that shed off you will be able to see what damage has or hasn't been done. She's so pretty :(
-
Poor baby. Please keep us updated. And I am very glad that you followed through to help her. I pray she recovers well.

Re: Help!!!
To Clarify
"She calls me saying it has a bad shed so I come over and remove the leftovers, including retained eye caps (gave her a good soak and it all came off in the soaking tub)...4 days later she calls again saying the snakes eyes are crusty and blue again."
I am guessing that this retained shed had been on for quite a while and she just neglected to notice or just chose not to do anything about it. Its very unlikely that the snake shed and shed again 4 days later (I should have been more clear).
Update on the lil gal, she has been to the vet and yes, the live spectacles are damaged and there is a definite chance of blindness. Will post updated pics soon, she is already looking a lot better and had a clean shed other than eyes after soaking and adequate housing for a few days. Amazing what good temps and humidity will do! Once again she is never leaving my sight.

poor thing shud of just kept her from day one some people arnt fit to own pets

I'll state up front that I'm not fishing for an explaination, but as cool as her banded pattern is, I have a hard time believing you let her out of your sight the first time. I don't think I could have, and I don't even collect females.
Not trying to bust on you, but she is a seriously beautiful animal.

Re: Help!!!
Yes, It was a big mistake in the first place. I was going through some money issues and thought it would be best to find a few of my babies a home. I was brainwashed by this friend of mine I guess :( I gave her a great set-up and detailed care sheet and she convinced me that she could take good care of her... boy was I fooled.

Re: Help!!!
This is her today after eating a nice fat mouse, she is looking a lot better already. My camera is terrible and I did not want to mess with her to get a pic of her eyes today, they look blue and cloudy but I can barely see the pupil and actual eye looking around underneath.

Her skin certainly looks much better than is some of those earlier photos.
Thanks for the update.
-
She's way too gorgeous I would have never let her go in the first place. She's a beautiful snake and if you want to try giving her away again, I'll sure take her as soon as she's all healed up :D
-
Woooowwww her head is insane!!! :) :)

Re: Help!!!
Glad she's feeling better on :O She's gorgeous!! Love her head!!
