    Snake collar/harness/leash?
I was talking to a lady at the pet store yesterday about snakes, and she said she saw some people walking ball pythons and burmese pythons on the beach, on collars and leashes. Do they really make those for snakes? Do they work? If so, where can I find them? I just want to see what they look like :P

How the heck would you keep a collar on a snake?! Putting a tube of fabric on a cylindrical, soft, moving animal with no limbs doesn't seem like it would work very well.

I don't believe that story at all.. Like the above said putting it on a cylindrical animal with nothing to stop it from moving. It would have to be tied very tight for the leash to keep a grip on it. I'm pretty sure any snake would hate that.

Was she wearing a tie-dyed shirt and saying "maaaaan" a lot?

I suspect the 60's may have been unkind to her.

Besides the difficulty of putting a collar on a snake, and the resulting thrashing panic of said snake...

How would anyone "walk" a python? Have you seen them moving on the ground? You'd take a single step every five minutes!

I've seen leashes advertised for reptiles/snakes, but never yet seen one in use that wasn't a disaster.

    She was full of it.

It was probably an idea developed by the same person who came up with the gerbil shirt:

I'm convinced that there's some kind of mechanism under the threshold of every pet store that removes common sense as you cross into the building...especially when it comes to snakes.

I've heard more stupid snake myths, rumors, lies, half-truths, and misinformation in pet stores by both pet store workers and regular bystanders than any other single place I've ever been...and keep in mind, I was raised in the Panhandle of Florida where half the people wanted to handle snakes to get them closer to The Lord, and the other half thought putting hemp rope around your camp site would keep snakes out...

Oh, I bet a snake would HATE that. I once tried to put a paper collar on a ball python, so that she could have a nametag at a party. It wasn't a very tight collar, but she HATED it, and she's a pretty tolerant snake. i had to give up after a minute of her freaking out. I think it triggered a sort of "I'm being attacked something is going to eat me!" instinct.

Someone once asked me if they made sweaters for snakes to keep warm like how they do dogs. I humored her and just said, "No, but I cut the tops off of socks and use them."

FYI, you can't put a necklace on a rat, either.

I'm restarting an old conversation here, but I heard this the other day, too, from someone who actually owns a snake. I just walked away and tried not to stare. This world is getting stranger and stranger.

A couple of years ago there was a girl who posted on another forum that I used to frequent, who used a modified lizard harness and leash on her snakes, when she would put them in trees for photos, to keep them from getting away....

Thank you for the belly laugh. This kind of reminds me of when I requested a friend knit a sweater for my snakes when I have them out in the winter.

    snake collar
Hi I’m new to this sight and this is my first post. I came out with a collar for snakes about 10 years ago. Posted pictures on the sight under the title snake collar. They are not too hard to make but be sure that you use two of them and use the ones with side tabs. Buckles will damage the snake. Also you will need to keep your eye on them because they will move. You don’t want them to get too title.

    Old zombie thread, yeah.
    Horrified anyway.

While we are concerned with how to adjust the buckle, remember, for most of the world, it is Summer. Would you rest your tender belly on mid-day asphalt?
