Best ratio?
In everyones opinion what do you all think the best ratio of males to females are to have in a collection?
Right now i have:
1.1 cinnys
0.1 pastel
0.1 normal (im like 90% sure she is a she bc i tried popping her twice and got female both times but im not positive i did it correctly. But whatevr, he/she was my first snake so im never getting rid of her :) )
Anyways so i was just wondering what you guys get the most success with as far as ratios? Like keeping a 1.3 ratio, 1.4, 1.5??? How many females do you like to breed your males to?
-
My current goal is 1:3, but is am sure higher wood not hurt.
-
Cool. Ive decided im gunna keep it to 8 or 9 bps until i finish school, no other species either. So im trying to decide what ratio i wanna do.
2.7 or 3.6
Im thinking 2.7...

I am extremely female heavy but I am looking to add a male or two this year. I currently have 31 balls and only 4 are males. I am normally have 1 male to every 4 or 5 girls depending on the projects I'm working with. I recently sold some males and now I need to pick up replacements. I normally don't buy males untill I have a few females that are ready for him to breed.

Re: Best ratio?
I'm definitely male heavy at 10.15 but will be holding back a couple of female morphs hopefully from the 3 clutches this year.
-
I have 8.17 but I'm planning on selling/giving away to friends at least three of the males soon. As well as holding back some more females this year. But it depends on what I hatch.

I'll take your pewter male of your hands for you lol...
So you have like a 1.2 ratio. Im loving all the differences in keeping methods people have here. It shows how you can be successfull breeding alot of different ways. Everybody doesnt HAVE to do it the same.
Im thinking that going female heavy would only benefit me so ill prolly do 2.7 or 2.6 :)

Some of what throws off my ratio is a normal male I have that isn't breeding anyone and a couple het males that only have one or two females that they can go with.
-
Right near 4:1. I was running higher but it is necessary to have backup plans if you need to stop breeding a male. A ratio like this allows you to focus on buying the most expensive males you can. Males can breed multiple females so your money is better spent on them. You can holdback better females from your own breedings.

Right now I'm at 5.0. Everyone keeps telling me it will never work, but what do people on the internet know, anyway
My local herp guy can't be wrong because he has turtles and stuff :gj:
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Re: Best ratio?
I am really female heavy right now...1 male for every 5 females. It's worked out great this year, but I do need to add another male or 2.
-
When the rest of my boys and girls come in by June i will be sittin at......
1.0 Normal
1.0 Cinnamon
1.0 Pastel
1.1 Pinstripe
0.1 Butter
0.1 Pewter
0.1 QueenBee
-
I'm 3:5 right now.
I'd prefer if two of those males would be female, but oh well. I got my male pinstripe as a pet w/o any intentions of breeding or owning more snakes at the time. And I won my male albino in a raffle. I still love them regardless though. haha

This post right here is a perfect example of how ratios are more dependent on what your breeding plans are. If you are working with recessives as well as dom/codom you may not breed those males to more than 1-2 females unless you have a bunch of het females you plan on breeding them to as well. I am sitting at about 1.3 right now. My het caramel pair and het clown pair throw the ratio off though. Looking more at 1.5

Very good point! I think im gunna try and add 3 female morphs het ghost and a ghost combo male. Then ill be at 2.6. And ill be able to produce some cool hypo combos hopefully since theyre my favorite recessive morph :)
(Obviously i wont be able to add all four more snakes at once though, not enough cash for that haha)

Re: Best ratio?
This is a highly subjective question but...
I would guess if your going for efficiency and effectivness a 1.4 ratio would work nicely. Since you only need a male to lock up with each female once per month or even shed cycle this would allow you to rotate a single male through 4 females in a one month time frame and allow him a little time off as well. But as I said its all opinion. Ive heard of people doing 1.7, personally I do 1.2 but Im going for some very specific results.

For breeding I have 6 females :gj:.
I only have 1 male I want to breed (enchi lesser) to 2 females. I'm hoping for an enchi kingpin male to raise up and breed to my other girls once they're old enough :D
-
Re: Best ratio?
This year, my breeders are 6.21, with 3 girls set aside for my Axanthic to produce het axanthics to raise for the future.
But with the morph girls and boys I've been raising my plans for this year, I will have 9.35 for the 2012/2013 breeding season.
it's close between a 1.3 to 1.4 ratio... so my boys should not get worn out, but can also visit other females if I don't see a good amount of locks with their current females...

Re: Best ratio?
I'm the guy that got into this hobby thinking it would just be one snake and now with twelve...and soon to be counting...hahahahaha! That said, my ratio runs thus: 4.1.7. Several of my animals are recessives and/or hets, so that swings the ratio somewhat. The .1. is a rescue, Rancid. No idea what he/she is...letting it heal up from the missing skin patches it received from some terrible sheds thanks to a well-intentioned but clueless previous owner before I pop/probe it.
-
I have 2 pet male normals, 3 breeding males, 2 breeding females and 2 baby females... I am a little male heavy. If I get my way I will add 4 females this year, or at least 2. I hope.....
-
I like 1:2 for a ratio. But I put all my $$$ into acquiring females, and I kind of wish I had some leftover for a couple really amazing multi-gene males.

You need to get those 7 sexed lol!
Unless you meant 4.7.1
Which i think is what you meant?
-
The ratio is, however many males it takes to breed all of your females and produce the morphs and combos that you want, lol.
ATM, I have the following males: Cinnamon, Spider, Lesser-Woma, Lesser, Lesser Het Orange Ghost, Woma Het Orange Ghost, Yellowbelly, Granite, Orange Ghost, Het Albino, Het Orange Ghost Poss Het Pied, and Piebald, but not all of them are mature, yet. Only 9 are mature. I have around 21 mature females, and at least that many younger females.
-
i have 4 males an 19 females plus what ever hatches out this year
-
I have 5 males and 13 females. Although for breeding it's 2 to 5 this year.
