I thought so too...I'm not very good with the more subtle morphs but I never thought I'd have to ask if its a good black pastel I figured I would know right off the bat. What makes a good black pastel?
It seems like the alien heads are more normal looking than the swirly kind i saw on other black pastels. They have 2 male black pastels to choose from in the whole expo, this one is $100.

I was trying to be polite but I have to agree with the rest and pass. Looks way to normal to me, but the belly is pretty cool..

Is it even a black pastel or is it a nice normal trying to be passed off as a morph?

That snake looks like a normal to me. Do the alien heads start to connect into one bigger squiggle towards the end of his body?

I think it is a low end Black Pastel.

The pics you are posting are making me think the selection at this show is kinda bad....

A nice one for me has dark, rich colors, with a good amount of orange, and very prominent squiggles, and nice bright flames. I dont see a single squiggle on him. Although its rare for me to find an older black pastel that I really like.

No not the best selection on base morphs at all. The big name companies had lots of high end morphs but little to no base morphs. It was also a lot smaller than I thought it would be...Colorado get shafted when it comes to reptile shows lol

It looked to normal to me, I think you did good if you passed on it because black pastel males are pretty cheap now and you can probably get a sweet looking one for not much more.

Sorry, don't know anything about black pastels but would guess that even a poor quality one could give good quality babies. Might depend a lot on what you bred it to.

I would have liked to check this new show out but had other commitments this weekend. Was wondering how it would turn out given that they sited it in a location banning anything over 3 feet. Sort of feel shows ought to boycott cities/counties/states with unreasonable laws. From what I read Florida is getting bad with permits and restrictions; is Illinois herp business friendly or is the big show now there now for some other reason?

Selective breeding certainly can enhance the offspring's looks but who wants to spend 2-3 generations to improve what is obviously a very low quality black pastel.

you definitely want a black pastel that doesn't make you question what it is :)

There are very few morphs that are known to throw a really nice offspring from a average or below average example. With the current price of Black Pastels, it is not worth it to pick up a bad example if you plan to breed in the future.

For the most part quality in = quality out.
