A simple question about my gravid ball python
hey so i have a gravid ball python that had a shed and so i thought it was her pre lay shed so i counted 30 days from that and the date for her to lay is 4-15 and so she hasnt been doing the coiling thing but she has been trying to go under the news paper and i have found her there sevral times but shes not next to the heat pad but my heat is on the back of the tubs and the temp in the room is high so i thought maybe its cause shes already warm every time i open her tub her body is warm but i guess my question is is it often that the gravid female does not coil until they actually are going to lay or was the shed she had not her pre lay shed?? thank you i will take any advice any one has i am a newbie!!
Re: A simple question about my gravid ball python
Mine actually stay rather loosely coiled or not coiled at all after ovulation as the eggs are developing/growing.
How are you regulating your temps?

I have a room with a heater set for 75-80 degrees and then the heat pads heat up the inside of the tubes so the temps are about 85-90 in the tubs

One of my gravid fat girls is actually wrapping her bowl, I have also had snakes shed 4 days before laying. I've also seen snakes rarely coil nice after ovulation. I've had several females eat after ovulation. Not every snake is the same. Watch the behavior, look at feeding habits, and look at how they build. Most snakes will do just fine regulating their temperature for proper development of eggs as long as there are options for regulating it. In other words don't worry about her behavior just make sure that she has proper conditions.

In other words, the guesswork on temps should probably be replaced with a more accurate method.

My first girl this year laid at 42 days post-shed, so I wouldn't rely too heavily on the calendar. Did you witness her ovulation, so that you can be sure it was her post-ovy shed?
Re: A simple question about my gravid ball python
Heh,
The one thing they forget to tell you in the books and on the sites that give the timescale is that the snake hasn't read them.
Always have the incubator set up and running for at least a week before you expect eggs in case you need to do some tweaking of the temps etc.
And keep and eye on how close to her vent the eggs are. :)

If she is pregnant she is likely shying away from food and has been for over a month and a half. With the lack of food and increasing egg size her spine will also poke out a bit. You may wonder why she is looking so big even though she hasn't been eating as regularly. If you are sure she is pregnant the probability of her laying in the next 4 days is very high.

Some girls are like clockwork...others are a true guessing game. Get the incubator and egg tubs ready regardless cuz you just never know.
yeah i have the incubator all ready to go everything seems to be working good and i checked on her this morning and she actually is starting to coil yay should be soonhttp://i653.photobucket.com/albums/u...evainacoil.jpg
