Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
I forgot to put a weight on my cage... and my two Bps got out... :| and it's been 9 days now and i've looked virtually everywhere... I can't find them.. i've done everything.. from putting and lining trash bags across the room entrances of my house to flour... Bad news is i have a cat.... and she likes to play with them.. ive monitored my cat and my bps together and idk ifshe was clawing them or patting them... but i shooed my cat away everytime it looked dangerous but then i realized shes pushingthem away.. But heres the other stupid thing..
2 days before i lost the bps i had a small usps box with 2 med mice.. and it was on my deep freezer top and they kept jumping .. the next morning the box was on the ground.. mice gone... x_X I HAve 4 animals wandering around my house... And i cant seem to find a SINGLE ONE.. I'm so frustrated.. i check under all the couches every day .. I CANT FIND THEM ANYWHERE... I feel like a horrible snake owner... :,( I've looked behind the washer dreyer.. under the stove... under every single couch... behind every couch... everywhere in my room since the cage was there.. No luck whatsoever.. i mean thinking that i lost two it would be easy to find at least one.. but no signs of them anywhere x_X do you guys suppose they went in the toilet or something? or went outside??!? it is arizona after all and its pretty hot outside though i wouldnt know how theyd get out :C i'm freaking out I have no more ideas i even put a hide out in the living room... for the past 3 days no luck... :| my cat has been acting strangely though running here and there... she normally just lounges... but i track her and i seem to find nothing as well.. :\ I feel so horrible.. i never wanna take my eyes off my snakes again if i find them.. :[ ive even looked between cushions.. anyone have ideas where they may be?

once mine got out i found it in my closet under some clothes 2 hours later

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
Hope you find them!
This is another good reason not to house snakes together...If you lose one, you lose the other(s)!
-
Any time mine have gotten out they were never more than 3-4 feet from their rack! Reallly really check close to their cage....Good Luck
-
-
Look in places you don't expect.
They can surprisingly fit in very small and tight areas.
You can lay out tin foil on the ground. If they slither across it, you can definitely tell.
-
Try looking behind the fridge? Anywhere dark and tight. Really hope you find them!! :(
-
awww. I sure hope you find them soon.
-
Are they big? If not check inside shoes. Believe it or not I had a baby escape one time from a rack that was by clothes hanging in my closet before I had my reptile room, she was up on the clothes rod. Iv'e had a couple escapees and the furthest they were was 10 ft from the enclosure.

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
My female got out the other day... I found her squeezed under my baseboard heater. Good thing it wasn't turned on...
You probably don't have baseboard heaters in an Arizona house though. If you have any cabinets in the room, check under the overhang. Lazy builders have a tendency to leave gaps on the underside where you can't see them. In my old house the gap was so large my cat got into it. On that note, all the furniture and such that you think is "solid" I'd check again. Especially in Arizona where those darn lazy builders don't have to worry about you noticing drafts.

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
Mine got out when I left the door open. Ops.
I found her on the TOP shelf of the closet behind some games, which means she climbed up the vacuum, up and over the hanging clothes onto the shelf.
I would have never looked on the shelf had she not knocked something off the shelf onto the floor.

I really hope you can find them. :(

Before I knew him my boyfriend's bp got out and he found her IN a duffel bag on the top shelf of his closet. Moral of the story is not look EVERYWHERE. If you can I'd try to search one room really really well and then sequester your cat in there. You don't want him finding them first. Check close to the cages really thoroughly and just take everything apart.

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
Check under dirty clothes or in your drawers. Usually that is where mine flock to if they release themselves.

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
Most likely there bear the Rack. My house is colder except my room which stays at about 85.. when I was going shots to one snake another escaped, look for him for ten minutes And it turns out he was on my stereo speaker looking at me like "hahaha!! I fooled you!" He was go w 2 hours and only went 5 feet.
This is why I love my Burmese... he doesn't hide when he roams, he stays in the middle of the room and says "you want me back!? Come get me then!!"
Luckily I've only had my BP "escape" once. I hope you fond yours!
-
First off, I wish you luck finding them.
And once you have located them, and they are safe and sound, I would like to revisit why you have them housed together, and why you let your cat play with them.
-
yrs ago i had a boa get out and i fuond it about4 months later sitting on top of my TV that i left on all day i picked him up and put him in a cage then went and got him some food
-
My recommendation is that if you have time, start with each room in the house one by one.
Start possibly with the room that he is in, and then keep moving out. It's going to take a day or two, but it may work!
Put the cat in a secure location where s/he can't affect your search, and just start. Start at one corner of the room, and move everything. Clothes in shelves, dressers. Just keep moving and replacing everything, checking every nook and cranny. If they're somewhere in the house, I'm sure you'll find them. Just don't think something too small to look in. The best way to know whether you've looked everywhere it to treat the search like a thorough spring cleaning. Once you're done one room, try and make it impossible for the snake to slither into that room, and go on to the next.
It'll take time, but it should be effective, in theory. It's the approach that I would use.
If you still can't find them, try to leave a nice warm place for them to return to, with hides. Hopefully you can find one!
We lost a snake in our pet shop before I arrived there, and where it was impossible for us to basically tear the place apart, apparently they found the snake a year later. In a pet shop, he was fat! But just keep hope! You'll find them.

I'd crate Mr. Kitty while I was at work and out of the house if I were you. Good luck, has to be a nerve wracking experience :/

I cannot stress enough, THINK SMALL.
Depending on the size, they can fit in the darndest places. If they are the diameter of a quarter for example, they can fit anywhere you can fit a quarter. And if they are all stretched out, they will be even harder to see.
Take a close look at their hides, if the hide is the size of a cereal bowl say, anywhere you can put that bowl they could be.
Look UP, DOWN, BEHIND, BETWEEN, INSIDE, UPSIDE DOWN, and everywhere in between. One member lost their ball when they had it on their lap and fell asleep, it was inside the arm of the couch. it had found a tiny hole in the fabric on the bottom of the couch and gone inside it.
Look inside shoes, socks, bags, boxes, anywhere there is an opening. I have had balls escape and found them 8 feet off the floor.
To put it in another perspective, I lost a 6' long 3600 gram female. Now a snake that size you would think would be a snap to find. Guess again. When I finally found her, I saw a piece of her side about 4" long. She had wedged herself behind the rack, between the rack and the wall, a gap of no more than 3".

ive had my red tail and my bp escape and both of them were found in between my mattress and the wall in a 2" gap so if i was you i would look in anything u have that is near a wall, look in dressers, closets, behind or inside anything leaning against a wall. good luck

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
Its been so long as still no sign of them, Not even the slightest twitch, i started to stop doing the flour thing cause it gets messy on carpets when a person in my family trots along in the morning.. Im considering donating all the clutter i have to goodwill to free some space and see if i overlooked anything.. I just cleaner their cage so its empty and without bedding of any sort so im waiting for them to somehow reveal themselves to me.. Patience is something i barely have each day i check under the couches to see if they somehow made it there... no luck yet

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
Also the whole playing with the cat thing, I decided to do that because my cat sat on my lap as i was handling the bp and she starrted sniffing its face and ect and she became very curious, as did the bp and then my cat just laid there while my bp was moving around and about her.. going on top of her ect x3 idk... Im kinda using my cat as a guide as well... following her every move hoping she goes somewhere in the house and finds them :\
-
Wow bad luck. Have you looked behind the fridge or in the back?
-
I really hope you find them! My bp got out one night.when I noticed she was gone I was in tears. I found her on the chair that is right next to her tank curled up in, my hoodie. I also had my corn escape. She was gone for 6 months so I long ago gave up on her. About a month ago I found her outside sunning herself. She survived the winter outside! So don't give up hope. They could turn up where and when you least expect it.
-
Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
before you donate anything to goodwill...please, please make sure you triple check it for the missing snakes, and then have someone else check it as well...it would be a surprise to someone in goodwill if they were to find it/them
-
Oh, also, check sleeping bags and blankets. A friend of mine's snake escaped and that's where they found it a couple times.
-
Out of curiosity, how big are the two bps and have you tried using painters tape? I know it's a big thing with lost corns but if the bp is too big, it might not work. Basically, you use painters tape (so they don't lose skin when peeling it off) and lay it down, sticky side up with the ends rolled under to attach it to the floor. I've done this with success before. Just make sure you literally line every wall (behind furniture especially) and across doorways. It's cleaner than flour though your cat may disagree. The morning I found my corn, I had to extract him and the cat from the tape but at least he was safe and sound. If you try this and catch them, just make sure to use vegetable oil to help it release from their scales.
Also, you'd be amazed at how well they survive. My big corn girl got lose while a friend had her and they found her 3 months later upstairs with a meal in her belly that she apparently had hunted down. Whatever you do, don't give up hope.
-
Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
I disagree with any type of tape, that could really turn ugly quick if you don't find them after they've been over the tape. Flour may be messy but its much safer for the snake and you can track where it went. If the flour sticks to the snake, it will eventually come off on something. Also, you could take a deep tub, cut a small hole in the lid, put several rodents in it and leave it out in the open over night. Chances are if they are hungry you will find them in the tub.
-
Basically using the flour as a short trail of bread crumbs ^^^
-
Another tip is to follow the walls. Most snakes are going to make their way to the boundaries of the room, and then follow the walls to a safe place. The first good hiding spots in either direction of your cage are going to be your best bet.
As was suggested by RideRed, a rudimentary 'trap' isn't a bad idea. I found a lost snake once by baiting a bird nesting box with a frozen thawed rat. The snake had been missing for days, and following my own advice of wall-following, I surmised that the snake had made its way into the walls via a hole cut for the apartment's heating pipes. I placed the box near said hole, went to see a movie, and when I got back found the snake halfway in the trap.
Best of luck with finding your snakes! My fingers are crossed for you!
Cheers,
-Matt

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
You can also put a heat lamp in the middle of a room with a hide under it each night. If it gets a little chilly he will come to warm up.

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
Succsesss! I found them out of pure luck! my little sister said she heard some rustling behind a file cabinet in her room. while she was playing with her little ribbon garter snae.... I was skeptical at first because i already looked behind there...so i was like are you sure? and shes like I think so! and shes 10 so i dont really trust her as much... but i was like okay ... if your sure about it.. i started moving things around and pulled off the file cabinet from it's place.. Astonishing as this may seem but there they were both curled up chilling literarly inches from eachother.... Idk about you guys saying that they cant co exist.. but if anything theyve been gone for nearly a week and a half.. and theyre right by eachother when i found them.. that must say something afterall.... C: im so relieved now. :))))) Soon i'm getting a water monitor and a green iguana as well.. hopefully i dont loose these as well -.- at least theye bigger and easier to find ha.. ! Thanks for all the help everybody! :) turns out sometimes traps and stuff won't work... a room away.. and some patience does the trick as well.. and to all of you with loose snakes.. NEVER GIVE UP!
-
Congrats!! So happy you found them! It would be a terrible situation to go through and I hope it never happens to me. Your story has a happy ending at least not all get off so lucky.
-
Glad you found them. :gj:
-
WooHoo! Glad you found em!
-
First and foremost, I'm glad you found your snakes!
Don't be so quick to draw conclusions about their long term behavior based on a single event. They may have been side by side because the location you found them happened to be the most ideal from a temperature stand point. That does not make them BFFs.
I still urge you to house them in separate enclosures and I hope you don't let your cat play with them anymore, even closely supervised, that is an accident waiting for a place to happen.
And finally, before you go out and get a water monitor or iguana, I hope you obtain a couple of sturdy enclosures that prevent easy escape.

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
Anywhere dark, small, and warm. Especially under piles of clothes. I don't house mine together and I am very very anal about them getting out. Kind of a phobia I guess so I check their tops a few times OCD style.
-
wahooooo.. glad u found them....
-
ive been following this thread hoping you would find them. im glad you did you must feel relieved and happy i know i would be.

Re: Guys I Effed up big time.. i feel like a failure :\
I'm so glad you found your snakes! We lost one of ours even though the gap from top of tub to "ceiling" of our snake rack is wayyy skinnier than his body. I guess they can squeeze their bodies down to nothing!
We found him at the side of our refrigerator after freaking out for a few hours. Good job on the find, and I know how that feels!
