I use to be (a few years back) I would ride 20-30 miles a night 3 nights a week.

Back when I lived up north I enjoyed mountain biking but there are no mountains (or even hills) here in Florida

I literally just got off my road bike. Getting ready for the spring criterium season. I'll be starting to do two-a-days M-W-F of next week with regular morning group hammer fests the other two days.

Several of the guys in my morning group never took any time off this winter and are already rounding into good form. They're laying a beat down on the rest of us right now.

#2- that CW MTB bike, nice! But only in the BMX sense : )

CW was resurrected a couple of years ago by some vintage BMX collectors. Selling new stuff now. And nice too.

Do you have that CW mountain bike on hand now?

Well, my sig has all the info you need about my opinion of the roadie vs mtb debate. In the Twin Cities metro area, at least, it seems like all the slow/casual bikers are the ones riding mtbs, and they ride them on smooth trails and roads. I've never met one I couldn't pass, and the fastest one I ever ran into was working WAY harder than me to go slower than me. :)

I wish I was riding my '04 Trek 1200 as much as I used to (used to commute 13 miles each way 5 days/week pending bearable weather - not so much anymore). For some reason, ever since I started working an overnight shift (10PM-830AM) a few years back, it's a lot harder to have the energy/desire to go biking. :(

Has anybody else noticed that the price of a bike with decent components on it has gone WAY up over the last few years? My 1200 came with a Tiagra front and a 105 rear derailleur, and it retailed for like $800 or so when I got it. Bikes with that level of components seem to be $1500+ now, and bikes with full 105 or better are just straight-up unobtanium. I know we haven't had THAT much inflation over the last 8 years, so what gives? Is it just a bike industry response to the ever rising price of gasoline?

Wow, I wish I could afford to sink that kind of $$$ into a bike. I am deeply envious, sir. :)

I used to mountain bike race with my dad when I was young. I still have my bike, it's covered with all my old racing stickers so it's near and dear to my heart. It's a Specialized Ground Control, if that means anything to anyone, lol. I'm way too out of shape to take it on any trails, but it would be a blast. The last time I raced I hooked the handlebar end (the bullhorn looking add on) on a skinny little walking bridge we had to cross at a good 15 miles an hour. I was done after that. I'm ok with falling on the ground, but the bridge sucked.

I picked up an old Peugeot road bike from my job and repaired it to working condition. Been riding it for the past 2 years and its working great aside from its heavy frame.

Hard to say - I've been biking pretty actively for most of my adult life, so when I went from the crappy seat on my old mountain bike to the nicer one that came on my road bike, I was getting a pretty good comfort upgrade.

Another thing that makes a big difference (laugh all you want, it's true) is spandex. Those shorts have padding in the butt, and while it feels weird to wear at first, it makes it much more comfortable, especially if you're going to be in the saddle for an extended period. My personal preference is for Pearl Izumi shorts, but everyone's body is different, and others may fit you better. Note also that they're intended to be worn as a single layer (no underwear), and that they may both feel weird and not work as well if you wear underwear with them.

I think this is the latest version of my favorite pair: PI shorts Yes, it stings to spend that much money on that small a garment, but trust me, it's worth every penny. Worst case, just wait for them (or something similarly good) to go on sale.

Biking is my main form of transportation and having more bike paths and bike lanes than any other city in the country doesn't hurt.

snakesRkewl, if you haven't yet, I urge you to try out a road bike. The taller ratios, lower weight, and lower rolling resistance will significantly shorten your daily commute. Back when I had the 13 mile commute I mentioned earlier in the thread, going from a mountain bike to a roadie saved me 10-15 minutes each way, for a total of close to a half hour a day of saved time. It was also smoother and quieter (esp going from knobby mtb tires to smooth road tires), making for an overall more pleasant commute. The only way I'd commute on (or otherwise ride) an mtb these days is if I had to go off-road. Sure, I don't risk biking down stairways anymore, but that was always kind of a dumb thing to do anyway, so it's no big loss. :)

They make slick mtb tires...and it's simple to change gear ratios...and going down stairs is fun... :D

You'll need a few hundred miles in the saddle before your sit bones and butt start to harden up. A good pair of bib shorts greatly speeds up the process. Currently I'm riding in Voler gear since they supply my team kit. I like their bibs alot.

Although, I broke my wrist and now that I have plates and screws in it, find the drop bars far too painful and just bought a Trek FX 7.7 hybrid. It is much more comfortable.

I'm sorry about this but crackandfail I mean cannondale aren't made in the USA. They say they are but like 80% of bikes are welded off shore and are assembled here. That's one of my biggest pet peeves in biking. Betcha it rides nice tho!

I agree 100%. Rocket V for everyone. I don't know how true this is but I heard that WTB sent some riders out with balsa wood seats on their bikes. They were told to share the wood down until they had a comfy seat. That's how they ended up with the basic shapes for their seats. Awesome story.

Slick MTB tires will still weigh more than road tires, and thus be harder to accelerate and to maintain speed on. The wheels are bigger and heavier, too. The more rotating weight you have, the harder it is to go fast. Not saying you can't do it, just that you're working harder if you do.

Bikes are bikes...it all comes down to personal preference. It looks like a great commuter, even if it's gonna crack and fall apart and it weighs 65 pounds. <<<sarcasm :D

If I could commute by bike I'd be sporting something like this...slick tires, light weight, steel frame, basic single speed no frills transportation...and if you're mechanically inclined you can find them at yard sales for 10 bucks in stock form and spend a few hours and a few more bucks converting them to SS...

It is a nice ride, light weight and while it is a MTB I enjoy riding it, and I'm somewhat intimidated by skinny road tires :P

So would you say this bike is falsely advertised?

I know they used to make some models here in the US but I thought they were all overseas now? Not that it matters as they are just as good a quality as any other mass produced bike...

Bontrager...as in Keith Bontrager...a legendary frame builder. Unfortunately Trek decided to stick his name on just about everything coming out of their factories in Taiwan...
