Would You Be Interested In A Herp Husbandry Android App?
I am thinking of creating a herp husbandry android app, and am wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing it. The app would be a database that would keep track of your husbandry. It would have a QR code generator that you could use to tape to the front of your cages and scan to select each herp. It would also have quick options, like I fed my herp today, and it ate; or my herp shed today. Additionally, it would have the option of e-mailing husbandry reports from the database.

What other features would you like to see in this type of app? If you would be interested, how much would you be willing to pay for a husbandry app?

Before anyone asks, I am not able to create an Apple app for the time being, because I do not own a Macintosh computer. If I decide to purchase one, then I would.

If you can think of any types of apps that you would like created, PM me.

Thanks. I would make it general, so you could use it for all herps.

I wish I could create it for Apple, but Apple requires that you own a Mac in order to develop for their market. I guess they figure that it will cause more people to buy their computers...

Yeah. Definitely a huge downer... However with a mac, you can make apps for both :gj:. Problem solved haha!

I'll go ahead and answer the poll. Whether my buddy develops one, or you develop one first, I really just want some SIMPLE - FAST - and CUSTOMIZABLE feed charts on my ipad :gj:. I like writing in the little notepad for my ipad to remind me or keep track of things. Having everything there in a simple app would be so awesome! The only problem I could imagine is losing all your files if it gets stolen.. Simple fix would allow it to be backed up. I would probably still want to print the charts for my records. That way I have the best of both :gj:.

    serpent fan
Maybe the qr code could bring up a picture of the snake, and the snakes food, for feed reference, in case someone is feeding for you..
Also, temp charts/humidity charts (like a visual graph)
Now all i need is a web cam feed 24/7 from snake to phone

I selected maybe. Depends on how much it was. That would be cool to be able to scan each herp, then input. I have only ever bought one app ever though. Keep us posted if it fomes out, I will check it out.

I know that iHerp is currently developing an ANDROID based tracking program, and i am almost certain this is already active for the iPhone users.

I'm not sure if you were going to have a different approach then just tracking but for those who don't know about it, its worth checking out.

You can click the link HERE or click the signature in my comment to link to my current ball pythons tracking sheet.

Also iPhone users just search iHerp in your app store...

Couldnt find it in the app store. But I'm not a big fan of iherp. I want something super simplified with the option to go advanced and add more information.

iHerp is the most simplified and user friendly tracking program i have seen to date. I also noticed there is a lot of advanced settings that you can use to set up breeding logs, as well as batch feeding. The site also has a dashboard that counts how long your ball pythons have been off feed. Its pretty useful, but as you said its not everyone's cup'o'tea.

Only if there was a way to make the reports printable.
That is my complaint about Iherp, when I take my animals to the vet I would like to have a printed out tracking report to give.

I could see how that could be bothersome for some people, you should try suggesting that feature on the iHerp website. The owner is actually very responsive.

    There's a "printable worksheet".

I think the tracking options on iherp are very deep and detailed. I appreciate all that and I know some people enjoy that. Personally I rather just write out what my snake ate and when... What day it shed. I would want the ability to write notes on each action. Like I said. I just want a super simplified app for what I reallly need.

That was going to be my answer too... as I have a brand new iPhone 4S (which replaced a 3G), and no plans to ever get an Android. Great idea, though! :gj:

P.S. For people like me, who often buy feeders at the store, it would be great to include a quick reference "dashboard" like on iHerp. Preferably to fit on one page, though, unlike iHerp's dashboard - where you have to hit "next page" if you have more than like 5 snakes. But it would be awesome to have that feature in an app, so I could quickly look at who's hungry, and calculate how many rodents I needed that day.

I am actually planning on making that very simple, for example using speech like I fed my herp a large rat today, and it ate; or selecting it from a list. Also, scanning the QR code on the cage to select the herp would make things go a lot faster. I personally do not use husbandry software, because they take too long to input. I want to make it as efficient as possible.

This is what I'm trying to say. Sorry if my words didn't suggest this at all.

I just find that it takes too long having to select a drop-down of options, then toggle what I want to be toggled, when I really only care about like 3 things lol. This is where heavy customization comes into play. I personally only care about my snake shedding, when it's in shed, when it ate, and how much it weighs when I weigh it. I know a lot of people like to keep detailed records on each of their snakes (defecation, size of prey, length, etc.).. I think you should include all of those options, and allow the user to customize their own feed chart. Once they complete a month (or 2 months, etc) of feed tracking, they should be able to print out hard copies of the records.

You can never go wrong with customization. Deep and meaningful customization is a must IMO. Allow the user to customize the wallpaper, the look of feedchart, or even the font! I think any of these things would make for a sweet app that anyone can use.

I have android, no need to wait around for an apple app :P

I just tend to write things down on a notepad now labeled "SNAKE" on my fridge and have feeding days labeled in my calendar app. I put down when poop and urates happened, cleaning day, dull - opaque - full shed and label pieces or good shed, last meal, and weight/length if that helps at all. Might be overkill but I like being well-rounded in case I have to rush him to the vet. If I could print out a sheet that labeled everything within that month in bullet points sorted by days, I think that would offer the best readability for a vet.

I think it would be cool if the app was able to connect to your camera, and you could take pictures and link them to an event :gj:.

When testing guitar hero, we had an excel sheet that my co-worker created that had had something similar. When we tested a song, there were certain things that we did for each song. For each little mini-task, we would "Pass" or "Fail" it. Failing resulted in red highlight coloration, and when we wrote up a bug, we were able to click the "Fail" button that linked directly to the bug! It was awesome!

Wh00h00, if you ever need some feedback, feel free to PM me! It's my job ;). I'm technically a "professional" LOL.
