Hey how many hides are in this picture?
Can you see it? No that's because there isn't one single hide for two BPs at this big box pet store

Pet stores are known for not putting hides in their cages. They don't care about the animals as long as they still make sales. To them not having hides increases their chance of a sale.

Most big box stores I go to at least put in one crappy hide, directly in plain sight giving them no sense of security. But this place had none. A plus husbandry

What did you expect? Can't see the snake if it's in a hide . All they want to do is get it paid for and PUSH it out the door.... NEXT snake please !!!

Luckily the Petsmart near me doesn't carry BP's but the corns that they keep always break my heart. Week after week they're in the same place, looking pretty much like they're dead. The stick-on dial therms that they use read over 90 in the display area... makes me sad for the tiny little guys.

My local PetSmart keeps their BPs at 100% humidity and the hot spot at 80º (according to the stuck-on dials). I gently alerted the manager and she said she'd get someone on it right away to fix it, haven't been back to see if she actually did or not. She did personally remove the dead bettas I pointed out to her and claimed she had a python as a pet, so hopefully...

I have a friend who works in a different PetSmart and absolutely hates their procedures with reptiles, but she can't do otherwise because they're company-specified guidelines meaning if she does anything else and they find out, she could get fired. Hate the corporation, but it's not always the employees' fault.

At my big box place of employment you can't even see the snakes because of the hides lol. Some big box stores do take care of their pets, and we're one of the lucky ones to have people who work in that department that are knowledgeable and herpers themselves.

Whether or not they're clued in to husbandry, another logical point would be that if time is wasted pulling hides back and showing people snakes then that's less productivity some where else. Yeah, it sucks for the snakes and it irritates us that enjoy the snakes. But they're out to make money, not treat the snake like a god like we do. ;)

    Hrrrrrrrrrm... :irkd:

There aren't really any big stores over here that sell snakes. Pets at Homes larger stores I think have only just started getting corn snakes in but I haven't been in since they did. We've got specific reptile stores only really, and they are few and far between. At least the store I go to know their husbandry for ALL their individual reptiles, and don't only care about the sale. Its about knowledge, and awareness and spreading the love for reptiles. Not sure if I ever came over I'd be able to walk into Petco after what Ive heard/seen on the forums.

It's not about treating the animals like gods, it's about the ability and willingness to treat the animals to the basic level of husbandry required by said animal. The big box pet places simply don't do it, why? Because as you pointed out, they're out to make money and the profit margin drives everything they do.

That's my point, and it's just like your local "pet shop" that sells an animal mislabeled as a different morph than it actually is. They're just there to make money, the animal is only dollar signs rather than living being.

Though, not all big box stores are like this. My local petco has the president of the herpetology club and many members working there, taking care of all the animals. :)
