Newbie :)

Hey guys how are we all? I have joined this site because I recently got very interested in snakes and well I am looking for one as a pet. Do you have any suggestions as to what would make a great first pet?


P.s I would like a snake that likes to be handled! :D

I would recommend a corn snake. Lots of morphs, easy care requirements, eat like pigs and are very hand able.

I would either recommend a corn snake ^ or a ball python. Both make great beginner snakes and are usually really handable.

I am also going to throw in Rosy Boas they stay pretty small if size is of any concern. Also Kenyan Sand Boas

Well, since this is a ball python forum (actually, this is the ball python forum), I'm going to recommend a ball python. Very easy to handle, manageable size and straight forward husbandry requirements. Of course I'm biased because they're my favorite.

Can't really go wrong with a corn snake either.

Welcome! I too am gunna reccomend a ball python. All of the corns ive handled tend to be flighty and dont sit still. If thats what youre looking for then by all means go for a corn or king snake. But if you want a snake that just sits in your lap while you watch tv then go for a ball python. I love mine. :gj:

Hey and welcome to the site !

I would definitely recommend a ball python. Just be careful... they can get addicting.

One thing I would also add is this : Whatever snake you decide on, try to stay away from the pet stores such as Petsmart and Petco. Try to find a local breeder or one from this site. You wont regret it.

Thanks for all your replies! Seeing as I obviously know nothing about snakes haha I'm guessing there is all different types of corn snakes and ball pythons is there all types of breeds or just the one? I would like to google to find out more info on them, preferably good looking ones

I live in Australia would I be able to buy them here?

First :welcome: to BP.net! I would also highly recommend a ball python, they make great beginner snakes and come in a TON of different color and pattern morphs. For a good reference check out http://www.worldofballpythons.com/morphs/ you can browse thru the 1300+ different morphs!
As far as owning them in Australia IDK, but there are some members here that are from there and hopefully they will chime in for you.

I'm a firm believer in the first three: Corn Snake, Leopard Gecko, and Bearded Dragon. The so called "beginner's reptiles" - though be careful, I can't live without a leopard gecko since my first, so like many here, I'm hooked too.

I've always been partial to a Candycane, in person they are very striking!

I'd say Russian Ratsnake, the one I have is awesome.
Active durring the day, great for display.
No agression, she will climb right up my arm when I open her cage, and she pounds the food.
She wasn't easy to find, I can't believe they are not more common, I have no idea how hard they would be to acquire in Australia.

I paid $90 for her +$50 shipping

Two words......Ball.....Python.
Also get it from a breeder, do your research on here for good ones. Do yourself an favor and Don't buy from the big box stores
