How I'm spending my evening
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5.../Photo0435.jpg
Sorry for the bad photo quality, but I had to share this! As of right now I'm being forced to type with the on-screen keyboard, because Satin will NOT get off my actual keyboard and I think it's too adorable to move her (and she seems to get upset if we try). She came and laid down there as soon as I started looking at pictures of snakes, and is now cruising BP.net with me! :D I hope she doesn't get jealous and take a swing at me!
And she's still laying on the keyboard, cool as cucumber. :)
-
lol maybe the light of the screen has her captivated. I read somwhere before that boas are obsessed with lights...? Idk tho, i only have balls right now.
-
haha!! I had Peaches out on my shoulders earlier this evening and she wanted to do the same thing! I think they like the warmth coming off the keyboard. She had her tail around my mouse too - made navigating somewhat difficult.... :D
-
Awww. My boas do this too!! Eve especially, she goes straight to the keyboard towards the monitor. Crazy girl. :rolleye2:
-
I think it was the movement of the screen, because every time I scrolled or my bf moved his hand (our computers are next to each other) she'd look over and tongue-flick. She probably was trying to figure out how something with no scent was moving!
-
Awwww makes me want a boa so bad! Im in love with hogg islands O.o
-
You should get one Mike!! They're so much fun, and a lot less "jumpy" than Balls. :P

+1 Just be warned that once you get one, your pythons will not seem near as interesting!!
-
Uhh i know! Everyone says compared to balls, the pet rocks of the ball python world lol, boas are awesome. The only problem is right now all i have room for is my 41qt tub rack. And i have 4 of those slots filled already. So ya technically i could get a seperate tstat and put him in one of those but idk how well boas do in tubs...?
I might be moving into an apartment with friends this summer though so that means id gain alot of space. For more racks and snakes obviously lol...
-
I had my girl in a tub for half a year, she didn't seem to do badly in it at all. She also got taken out a LOT, so I don't think she minded that she only had floor space. :P
-
Yea i handle my bps pretty regularly, but its not like they enjoy it too much lol. If i got a hogg island i know they stay smaller but how long do you think i could keep her in 41qt tub for? Im sure id end up taking her out alot. This summer im almost positive ill be getting an apartment with friends so at that point id be able to get her a nice pvc cage bc id have more room for it...
-
A 41qt tub has the same floor space as a 40gal breeder tank. A baby boa would do fine in that for at least it's first year. Mike, I agree with everyone else - you should get one!!! :P
-
I love this! I love when we can all post media of our pets just being pets. How many YouTube videos are there of cats doing EXACTLY this and people think it is just the cutest thing, but when a snake does it, suddenly we're weird and our key boards are covered in salmonella.

I'm getting my little female Hog this Tuesday, and I must say that (personally) I don't like my boas over my balls/other snakes or vice versa (my boas don't make by ball seem "boring" or anything like that). Everyone is a joy to handle, they just have different personalities.
Mike, I have my current 3 boas in tubs and they are all doing great so a tub wouldn't be a problem, but I would recommend at least a 4' cage (or 6' for the larger Hogs since some can become just as large as Colombians) when it becomes an adult. Also, there's no such thing as a HOGG island boa...it's HOG with only one "g" :gj:

I thought HOG, sorry for the mispelling lol ;), Island boas stayed smaller? I read before males are like 4' and females are like 6'. If i bought one i would make sure its a PURE one. Boas are supposed to be not as heavy bodied as pythons though right so they dont seem as large as they are?
Does anyone have a good link for a hog island care sheet? A gooooood one.
P.s.- sorry to hijack the thread xfenrir :)
-
^ They usually do (stay smaller), but I've seen pure females get up to 7-8' before, it's better to plan ahead in case you get a female who does get larger. But yes, the norm is that they stay smaller then Colombians.
When you get into the adults/big adults they are strong (and IMO a little harder to handle than big ball pythons are since they like to go everywhere and explore while balls usually just chill out), and adult Colombians can get to be 30+ pounds. Like mentioned though I wouldn't worry about this with the smaller "dwarf" boas, but they still have very muscular bodies. If you get a baby you can grow with it and learn to handle it as it grows.
-
^lol you kinda contradicted yourself so im confused... Soooo if i get a female, which im 100% sure is what id want, and its a hog island it Could get to be 7'-8' and 30lbs but most likely she wont get that big if i get a pure one? If i get a baby ill get used to handling her so i should be fine.
-
A female Hog Island should stay closer to 5-6ft as an adult. They can get bigger, but usually don't. A 4x2 enclosure will be fine for an adult female Hoggie and that 41qt tub will do for her for some time.
A good care sheet for a Hoggie is a good one for any boa - their care requirements are about the same. Check out the Boa Caresheet on this forum and a really good book is Vin Russo's "Complete Boa Constrictor" which you can get through Reptile Basics or directly through Vin's site Cutting Edge Herps. I love the book myself - it's very informative! And there's lots of info on Vin's site even though there isn't a specific caresheet there. Vin works with a lot of the insular localities like the Hog Islands and Sabogae. :gj:

Cute! I put my laptop across my lap my boa loves to lay inder it. She is still pretty small though.

Yes, I have seen pure Hog females get to be 7-8' but the norm is around 6'. The 30+ pounds was in regards to Colombians, and my point about the pounds was that boas can get large, strong, muscular and heavy so it's something you need to be prepared for when thinking about a boa that could get larger than expected (ie a Hog female).
Will you end up with a monster Hog girl? Probably not, but large pure ones are out there.
-
Thanks bunches Evenstar! Also thanks daybreaker and xfenrir! I'll be sure to post pics if i decide to get anything. Youll have to wait til april 22nd though til the next expo :D
-

That picture is adorable! I've got my big girl hanging out over my shoulders now. :) Boas really are the best.
-
So much boa love! You all should get pictures of them, I'd love to see them being silly serpents too. :) The bigger they are the more adorable things seem! :P
