Asking for advice about substrate ???

I'm trying to get the best of both worlds which would include being visually pleasing and extremely functionable when it comes to humidity...

Cypress mulch

Eco earth, if you are in a glass tank. If you have plastic tubs, papertowels work fine. But assuming you have glass, since you can see it. Tubs hold humidity much better than glass.

I vote corrugated wrap, it looks better than other paper based substrates, but is just as easy to keep clean.

It isn't the best at holding humidity, but I would rather mist more often than deal with eco-earth (coco-husk) or any mulch that makes a terrible mess

Can you add water directly to the substrate to increase the humidity and your assumption that It is a glass tank is correct..

This question also applies to cypress mulch.

I've been using cypress in a glass tank after it was in a while it dried out and stays around 40% I also have foil and duct tape on the screen top I usually mist it a few times a day

yes you can, just don't add too much at a time

I cast a second voted for corrugated wrap if you're using a tub or PVC cage...it even comes in colors.

I know aaron posted the website before but where does the wrap come from? The colored ones?

I get mine from ULine and I don't use colors. We'll have to wait for Aaron to see if he's got the link to the colored stuff.

The best for humidity by far is cypress. But you need to be careful cause most of the cypress you find at nurserys are cypress blends which you dont want so you have to make sure its 100% cypress. Also cypress for landscaping is real chunky so you want to find a good shredded cypress like kambark. Now the easiest and most sterile of substrates is going to paper. Either news paper, corugated wrap etc. These are the easiest for cleaning and for a sterile environment. Glass enclosures are the hardest to hold heat and humidity so you have to be inventive in holding humidity such as blocking the top, insulating sides etc. What i would do is get some foam panels from home depot and cover the outside of the tank on the sides and back and 3/4 of the top. It may not look the nicest but its hard to get the best of both worlds with glass enclosures.

Well it's cardboard, half a sheet to be exact. It is more absorbent than other paper based substrates. I cut 4 sections of it for my cages, this lets me change less of it at a time.

Yes, remove snake first. Then start with a little bit of water at a time and kinda of stir/ squeeze it around in it to get even moisture. Works great for bumping humidity fast for a shed.
