Asking for advice about substrate ???
I'm trying to get the best of both worlds which would include being visually pleasing and extremely functionable when it comes to humidity...

Eco earth, if you are in a glass tank. If you have plastic tubs, papertowels work fine. But assuming you have glass, since you can see it. Tubs hold humidity much better than glass.

Can you add water directly to the substrate to increase the humidity and your assumption that It is a glass tank is correct..
This question also applies to cypress mulch.

I get mine from ULine and I don't use colors. We'll have to wait for Aaron to see if he's got the link to the colored stuff.

Well it's cardboard, half a sheet to be exact. It is more absorbent than other paper based substrates. I cut 4 sections of it for my cages, this lets me change less of it at a time.

Yes, remove snake first. Then start with a little bit of water at a time and kinda of stir/ squeeze it around in it to get even moisture. Works great for bumping humidity fast for a shed.
