Snakes are evil.
So here I was in my local petco(why is it always petco) and true to form I was in the reptile section checking out there supply of big healthy reptiles(no sarcasm here). All of the sudden a older lady and her grandkids stop to look a ferrets when the little boy asked to see the snakes. The lady, without skipping a beat , declared that snakes are evil. she wouldn't even let her grandson go look. I told her snakes were not evil but she spun around and escorted her kids away. Really evil really? I understand people's irrational fear of snakes and there ignorance and I know I'm not gonna change anyone's mind inside a pet store but I just kinda thought it was sad that this old bitty wouldn't even let her grandson look at the corn snakes .

I'm always baffled by the widespread fear and ignorance people harbor against snakes... for no apparent reason.
It's always interesting when I ask people WHY they're afraid of snakes. They're always either stumped, blurting out incorrect facts/assumptions, or shrugging it off with something like "because they're snakes and they're gross, duh."

My Mom is terrified of snakes and admits to it, I got her to pet one of mine recently but even that was a stretch. She thinks that they are beautiful (referring to my Pastels and spider BP's), that they are just another animal, and her fear is totally irrational but she has no problem with my girlfriend and I keeping them. She just wants us to make sure we keep them properly and safely.
If my mom can have this view point, why can't other people... I mean all I have to do is say the word snake and she gets all jittery.
-
Yeah, I sometimes forget how misunderstood snakes are just because I've been around them for so long, and then something like that happens. It's OK if someone is scared of snakes, i understand that, but when there is legitimate hatred from miseducation its the worst.

They ARE evil.......TO MY BANK ACCOUNT!!!!!

When I was teaching high school I had more than one kid tell me I was going to hell for keeping snakes.
Another time I had an older woman tell me the old myth about the boa stretching out next to its owner at night to see if it could it him/her. I just asked her if she thought snakes use the metric or SI system when performing calculations.
People be trippin.

I had to go to the ER a few weeks ago with intense vertigo because it turned out I had labyrinthitis, which is an inflammation of the inner ear. My mom came up to my apartment to drag my dizzy, stumbling self into the car and called my grandmother from the ER to tell her I wasn't dying, just had a bad ear infection giving me the dizzies. My grandmother promptly replied, "Could she have gotten that from that SNAKE she has?!?!"
Yes, yes indeed, those evil snakes just spreading those ear infections. Can't trust them for a second!

you see they are actually plotting our demise when they are tucked away in their hides.

thats exactly what i hear every time, its like my mom, she always says "idk, their just gross", and i say "youve never even touched one, how do you know their gross?", its quite the pointless conversation really so i dont try anymore, at least shes accepting of them, she just wont touch them or anything

Imagine how much easier life would be for us if satan had taken the form of a flea, or maybe a tick.. But nooo, it had to be a snake...

This.
When I had to move out from my old apartment to my parents' house, the only person I could trust to keep my Pin (and keep it a secret... My parents are ridiculously religious freaks and very close minded) was my sister, and when I asked her, she was like *insert a big number of swear words here* NO! So I asked her why.
Her response: Idk, they gross me out, they're all slimy and stuff. And I told her, I'll bring it to you, and if it doesn't freak you out, you'll keep it. She accepted :D
When I got to her apartment, she fell in love with my BP and nicknamed her "the earthworm" (the Pin was still a baby... Lol)

People should also know that snakes are the symbol of fertility, life, and healing.
This is why the medical and veterinary medicine logos contain snakes.

The answer I always get is "Because they don't have legs!!" ... which makes no sense to me -.-

Amen to that.

Re: Snakes are evil.
I for one have to agree with the lady. With that one statement she has saved her grandson a lot of worry which would lead to Hypertension then high bloodpreasure and the eventual stroke. But with her statement of snakes are evil he will not buy a Ball Python and will not have to endure the evil of the snakes. They do plot against us in thier hides how long can I not eat before my owner wont sleep, how many times can I tip over my water bowl, let see if I can squeeze into a hole where I will never be found, oh and I am forgetting the best of all I only want to eat white male med mice. Told you they were evil :P

Old people are so funny :P Your social security checks bounced. Stuff costs more than it used to. Young people use curse words.

"Snakes are Evil", some say. I wonder if this assumption has any connection with the book of Genesis.
Satan wasn't stupid when he chose to disguise himself as a snake (or serpent).
In order to fool Adam and Eve into eating from the Tree of Knowledge, he had to choose an animal that they found intriguing. Perhaps, at that time, it was one of the animals in the Garden which they admired most.
So, in my opinion, when people refer to the snake as being evil, they are merely continuing to fall for the oldest trick known to mankind.
Time to get educated people!

That is a really brilliant interpretation! I love it!

I find it funny. I mean, my mother is a highly religious person as well and she loves my snakes! She won't go near my boas, because boas aren't pet rocks  She had to snake-sit for me when I went on vacation last summer, and she fell in love with my male mojave. She sent me a picture text of him trying to slither up her pant leg! After she fought him out, he just layed in her arms and she melted, now she doesn't think I'm so crazy :D
My male OG might possibly be evil though, no doubt in my mind. You'd think I was looking to skin him alive and hang him from the ceiling fan or something with the way he acts

A coworker told me last night that she doesn't like snakes "because they're sneaky." She doesn't even know that I keep reptiles, and TBH, I don't recall how exactly we got onto that subject, but I found it pretty funny. I explained how they really would never try to sneak up on her, because they'd much rather avoid her, what with how she looks like a giant to them, but that didn't really seem to change her opinion on the matter. Not evil or hostile, really, just irrationally afraid, which, while sometimes comical, is unfortunate.
-
Im also terrified of snakes, always been! Sat with both legs up i the sofa watching Stewe Irwin Handling Taipans and Browns. But I loved to watch, and been facinated ever since.
After a visited to the reptile-center in Oslo 2005 , I fell in love with this small balls of python!
Ive been waiting until now to get one!
-
So irrational fears/phobias are just that - irrational.
I have a fear of most bugs - I turn into a screaming little girl when something flies by me. I get the heebie jeebies just thinking about it now. I don't know why I'm afraid; logically I know I'm bigger than it is and I could squash it with no problem.
As for the evil part - if we still took the bible literally, we women are among the most evil things to walk the earth, as we've been vilified from day one in the bible (thanks a bunch, Eve!!!).
And I find that people who most often quote the bible like to pick and choose what to quote so it suits their needs. I wonder how many of them lie, cheat, and steal on a daily basis? Judge not, lest you be judged, I say. :D

Re: Snakes are evil.
Ignorance is not bliss. Sometimes people are just plain stupid, and stupid should hurt. I have had people ask why I let my daughter handle the snakes.. She is a big girl, she loves her snakes, and has been around them for a few years now. She know what and not what to do, and only with an adult supervising. Yet people seem to think they are going to eat her alive or something. Maybe they could stand to learn something from a child.
-
Oh the ignorance.... :slamhead:
-
It's hard changing an image, and you really can't do much about it until a person is willing to sit back and actually look/listen to what you're trying to show them. The process was long, but I've graduated my step mother from having to call my snakes "rabbits" for her own sanity to asking me once in a while about how the snakes are doing. She refuses to see them or be in the same house as they are, but it's been baby steps to getting better about it. I don't want her to like them, but I do hope someday she'll give them a chance

I say ban warning lables not dnakes..lol... Think about it,we remove the dont eat this, its poison lable. And poof no more idiots...lol, remove warning lables, problem solved.
