What do you do for a living?
I am sitting at work on my lunch break and was wondering what types of jobs everyone else here has. I notice alot of people have the abilility to post during the day so it just got me thinking. I will start it off.
I am a full time college student and I work part time at a civil engineering consulting firm. Fun stuff. All I do at work is research information and maps, estimate project costs and compose grants for parishes and cities. I am working on a grant for a boat launch and parking lot for access to a cutoff lake right now.

Re: What do you do for a living?
I'm a tour guide/snake handler at Serpent Safari reptile zoo. It can be a cool job for sure, but it's not all fun either. (what job is)
I just wish I was a zookeeper there instead.

I'm an ordained minister and I pastor a local non-denominational church.
You can see what we're about on www.e-compasspoint.org

PS- Please forego the snake handling jokes. I'm not that kind of preacher. : )

Re: What do you do for a living?
i am the art director/lead web designer at an art college. it used to be more fun before they transferred all of the other designers into different departments and now i am the art director/ONLY web designer in my department. talk about a nice fat workload. going home to my critters each night keeps me sane though. :)

Re: What do you do for a living?
I used to work as a vet tech and as a wildlife rehabitator, but I've had to put that aside and now work 24/7 as a stay at home mom. Can't wait till the little critters both hit kindergarten!

Re: What do you do for a living?
I am a "full timer co-op". I was supposed to graduate in December and ended up repeating an EE Elective class :( It really sucks that it was an elective.
I am working full time for the company I was supposed to go on full time with, and taking my last class over....hopefully I'll pass this time. Class is not going well. Bleh.
I'm still making co-op pay, but I've got my own permanent desk. I ended up picking the Applied Research Department, for those of you that wondered :P I know the people better in here, and the projects change more often.
So technically, I'm still a co-op. After that I think my offical title is something like Research Engineer. After I acutally graduate I'll have a bachelor of science in electrical engineering.

Re: What do you do for a living?
I'm a 2nd year vet tech student and a slave to all of my "children"... All 16 of them. I would be graduating this year, but I didn't pass Advanced Anatomy and Physiology 2, so that means I didn't get into Vet Nursing... I also have to take a Zoology class, but that should be fun. This Friday we're going to a large animal vet clinic to help out with castrations, dehorning, vaccinations, palpations, and anything else they want us to do. Whee :)

Re: What do you do for a living?
I'm a full-time student at VCU, working on a Marketing and Business Law Degree, while also on a pre-law track with a lot of political science and philosophy stuff. I have a year left of that. Then its off to Law school...not sure where yet though.
Feels like I'm a professional student sometimes.........
I part time at a pet shop, that specializes in exotics of course.

Re: What do you do for a living?
I'm a network and systems administrator, but I have an assistant I've given most of the hardware-related tasks to, so I get to spend most of my time on special projects, database design/programming/admin/etc., network security, and stuff like that.

Re: What do you do for a living?
My family and I are in the restaraunt business. We are currently remodeling a building for a southwestern bar and grill which should be open in about 2 months. It's in a national historic park up here in northern Michigan. This is our second business we have built together, lots of hard work but it feels good when you can stand back and see what you've accomplished. I would love to make a nice display for a red tail in the joint but we'll have to see what the health inspector has to say about that, lol. Have to feed it after hours as watching a snake suck down a rat isn't the most appetizing thing for patrons to witness while trying to eat.......

Re: What do you do for a living?
Pretty much same as Marla except I dont have to do the database stuff (just get to deal with the consequences). Systems Admin and Support at a software testing facility. UNfortunately this entails working in a hypercooled server-filled room rife with the white noise of a thousand fans, air handlers etc and not a single window. If there is anything remotely graphic/design related I have that thrown my way as well. If I got paid for all the different hats I had to wear . . . . well I wouldnt batch about it so much lol.

I just realized that I didn't really explain what I do. The people in my department work on new projects, try to come up with new ways to do things, and we kind of act as "consultants" for the rest of the company. Members of the department often work on several things at once, and may get called out to one of the other plant sites to troubleshoot issues. Except for our 2 administrative assitants, everyone in my department is an engineer. It's mostly mechanical and electrical. About 7 or 8 people have Ph. D.'s and most have a Master's.

Re: What do you do for a living?
I am finishing up my second Bachelor's degree right now in the Health Science field. I already have an associates degree in General Studies (which amounts to just about nothing! LOL) and a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. I am taking the first of my three New York State teacher certification exams on Saturday. I have to take the Phys Ed Content Specialty exam (this saturday), then an education for the Secondary level exam in May &, supposing I pass all of my health science classes this semester, I will hafta take a Health Content exam to get my dual state certification to teach Phys Ed & Health.
PLEASE do not call it "gym class" around me! LOL! That makes me crazy! Gym class was when you had a big fat cigar smokin dude in a wife beater roll a ball out & tell you to play. I educate children on how to remain physically active for the duration of their lifetime by introducing them to new & exciting options. It really is a thrilling time for us! For those of you who are no longer in High School, how many of you had the opportunity to go mountain biking, kayaking, in-line skating, cross country skiing or rock wall climbing in your physical education classes!?
I am taking next year off of school because of the wedding. I hope to get into a grad school by the start of the fall 2006 semester and, if i can get good enough grades there, my ambition is to get a Doctrine of Education cuz I think that Dr. Z sounds pretty damn cool! LOL!
As for my employment right now, well, i was trying to live off of substitute teaching but that did not work out because of my limited availability. So, I am going on Tuesday for my training at Lowes to work in their Outside Lawn & Garden department this spring, summer & maybe beyond. Hopefully by next September I will have been able to find a job teaching PE, Health or both!
-
Re: What do you do for a living?
Hey man that sounds lot better than the masochistic excuses for PE that haunted my youth - i thin kthe neatest thing we may have done was crab soccer lacrosse and field hockey. I went through the same ordeal trying to substitute and eventually realized that even teaching full time I could not support a 3 child family. Hats off - I sincerely think teachers are underpaid, underappreciated and undervalued in our society!

Re: What do you do for a living?
I am a Manager of a Buildiing Supply Company that sells drywall, insulation and ceiling materials through out Michigan, Northern Indiana, and Wisconsin.

Re: What do you do for a living?
my job is not as exciting as everyone elses ... but it is interesting at times. lets see im 20 (till june) and right at this time i work as a "Certified Pet Stylist" (fancy name meaning i can give dogs a hair cut) but i do still have my license for my CMA (certified med aid) but only level one! eventually i would like to work at a zoo or vet office but i have to go to school first and to be honest i just dont have the time or the money to right now. but if i move back to my home town next year i am just going to open up my own grooming salon. see my job is not that interesting ... except for when i get bit!!! :) those are the fun days!

I am a Macintosh Administrator for a Agricultural Advertising firm in St. Louis.
I went to ITT in the Multimedia program as well and graduated with a 3.6 average (the math killed me). Did ITT actually wake up and start to include Macs in their Multimedia program yet?

Re: What do you do for a living?
I work parttime in a food store, dealing mostly with dairy/cheese items but also deli. I want to get a new job though, becuz I was promised a managerial position that never materialized. What movie was that line from... the guy worked a crappy job and he said "I'm holding out for a managerial position"? lol. But the pay is not too bad, and benefits are excellent.
I also work parttime at my friend's pet store, but that's mainly a helping-out type thing rather than a source of income. I work at the farm where my horse is boarded too; without doing that, I would have a homeless horse. :)

Re: What do you do for a living?
I am a construction superintendent for a custom homebuilder in northern Va.
I have been in the construction industry since I was 18, about 27 yrs.
When I started in the business there where like NO women so it at times it was interesting to say the least.
Still not many women in the field as supers. I love my job and the company I work for is awesome. I had to go thru a few to finally find the prefect company so I feel truly blessed and know my prayers were finally answered.
I am also a single mom to a almost 15 yo son
along with a Woody Allen version of a 9 yo female cat and of course my baby Ozzy.

Re: What do you do for a living?
I'm a System Engineer (MS, Novell, Cisco, BSD UNIX). I've been in the computer game for over 20 years now and I remember when the IBM/PC-DOS computer first hit the market. We were all running an OS called CP/M and it's multi-user brother called M/PM on S100 Bus Systems (yep I'm that old). Later we ran the original AT&T Unix OS. Now those were the good ol' days. ;)
BTW. Over the years I've fallen in, and out of, love with Macintosh. Currently I'm in love with OSX. What can I say, I've had a long running relationship with Unix- the OS that actually runs consistantly. Although the jury is still out on Aqua... LOL!

Re: What do you do for a living?
Well, I work as a volunteer at the local petshop. I am working on some breeding projects with herps, though. Beardies and Cresties are what I am currently getting stock for. I already have the leo stock. I should have some available in a few months from the leos. I am also in the proccess of organizing a herp society/rescue program.
I want to be a herpetologist. I want to move to australia, and work at the australia zoo. (by that time steve irwin will be like 50 and will have some MAJOR competition, lol).
While australia would be nice, I dont think that is gonna happen. lol
Most likely I'll end up breeding herps and doing vet tech work on the side.

Re: What do you do for a living?
Mike works for in the automobile industry in a paint plant. I'm a stay-at-home with a small home daycare as well. Our dream (and yes never stop dreaming!) is to one day own a pet store and run a nice well respected breeding program for Balls. Not just a pet store though, more of (hard to type out what is just a dream at this stage) more of an experience. Some place folks can buy a pet knowing it didn't come from a puppy or kitten mill or a reptile that is questionable at best and handed out like candy with no care sheet or follow-up support. Somewhere kids can come learn how to love and respect their pets of all types. A place pet owners can meet and gab about their particular animal interest. A place to visit and have fun, maybe learn something....not just walk in, buy something and walk out.
I grew up with a pet store like that in my hometown and what a treat it was to go every Saturday.

Re: What do you do for a living?
I'm a Transportation Engineer, with a degree in Structural Engineering. I mostly layout intersections, stripe roadways, design highway guidesigns. I also review other firms plans for content prior to final submittal. One of the most interesting jobs I've worked on lately was an ITS or Intelligent Transportation System. It involved installing cameras at 23 intersections which would feed live streaming video through a fiber optic network to the Traffic Control Center. Those manning the video console at the TCC can see what's going on and make any adjustments in the signals they deem necessary, and they work with 911 operators as well in the event of a vehicular accident (911 has screens so they can utilize the cameras as well). At the TCC, the signals could be controlled manualy, or be set to an 'auto pilot' of sorts depending on the time of day, traffic flow, etc... We also installed a system that enables the signals at the intersections to talk to each other to make traffic flow more smoothly during peak hour traffic. It will also send information back to the TCC for data logging. I'm sure you can see how it got the ITS acronym; it's quite a 'smart' system. Anywho... that about sums me up.:)
