Contemplating bloods
So, my wife and I were talking about getting a pair. I really like the orange headed black bloods. What are some peoples favorites and why?
-
I love them all. They are just so much fun. Currently I have a het albino, and an albino blood. I just love the deep red colors that they get. I find it so fun to have them get huffy with me when they want to be left alone, but they calm down nicely once I have them out.

Hey...Get a Blood python.

Yes. Blood pythons are a seperate species from balls. There have been a few hybrid projects between the 2 species though so it shows that they are fairly similar.
-
they can live together and breed?
-
Re: Contemplating bloods
They are only similar in a sense that they are both of the family Pythonidae.
These are 2 completely different species from 2 totally different continents.
To want to house 2 different species together in cohabitation is non sense. Let alone 2 snakes of the same species. The only time 2 snakes should spend any time together is for breeding purposes.

1. I used the word "fairly", meaning yea their care isnt identical but not completely different. Im aware that theyre from a more tropical environment so obviously their humidity has to be higher than balls. And they get bigger so a bigger enclosure is a must. But other than those two things is there that much more differences? I was under the impression bloods were fairly easy to care for... But i have never had any so im not speaking from experience...
2. I never said housing them together is a good idea. I only said i know of some hybrid projects between the two species. Like you said, the only time two snakes should be together is for breeding. Thats what a hybrid project would be. :)

Re: Contemplating bloods
Cool, and yeah my response wasn't personal.
I can come off that way sometimes, it's just that I am passionate about these animals and am a firm anti hybrid guy.
Bloods are fairly easy to care for yes, but do have different husbandry requirements like you said.
They are also a bit more susceptible to RI's so close attention needs to be paid to temperatures, both too high and too low, as well as humidity, water change frequency and ventilation.
Having kept Balls and animals of the Short Tail complex, I can say that Balls are a breeze compared to Bloods, in my experience. But once you have everything worked out, they are pretty self sufficient.
I would definitely make sure someone has some snake keeping experience under their belt before they get a Blood. They're just not as forgiving as some of the other species out there.
But take care of them and they are very rewarding

No harm done sir, i didnt take it that way at all :)
Like i said i have no exprience with them, but i was just speaking from what i have learned from you guys on here. The whole hybrid thing im kinda on the fence about. Like i can see both sides of it i guess. I just mentioned it to sorta make a point. I really hope to get some bloods someday after i finish school!

Re: Contemplating bloods
bloods are unique creatures, but as others have mentioned, there not as "forgiving" as BP's. BUT, as long as your a compatant BP owner, theres no reason that you cant take care of a blood or STP.
A thing that you might consider before getting one is to have the proper housing for one. Odviously, your going to need a 4' long cage in the long run, but as babies they prefer a smaller space to feel secure. If you decide to get one, you wont regret it, they are a blast to wach grow!!!

Blood are great animals do your research see if you can handle an adult to see how you really like it and chances are you will be sold.
Getting to be around one of my friends adult Bloods is what sold me on owning one.

Personally I've never actually kept a blood but I've handled a few and I absolutely love them. Just waiting on the funds to actually get one haha. I personally love the chrome head black bloods, the colors (or lack there-of) really make their eyes pop, and I love it!

Re: Contemplating bloods
BUY CBB!
There are plenty of people producing these fantastic animals now......don't purchase an import!
The $75 price tag may seem enticing, but not worth it!
Do your research and BUY CBB!

Ok, that's why I posted that, cause I didn't know. Wow! Congrats dude. You are having a pretty good season.

If we get one, I will for sure only buy CBB. I like the black bloods. Love the orange head. The wife likes them, but the only thing that holds her back is how big they get because of our little one. But shes been around snakes all her life and should be fine with supervision. Thanks for everyones input.
