Excitment then sadness
So, I was super excited because the fed ex fairy came today to delivery 2 babies and they were the first 2 babies I've ever had delivered to me. I opened the first box to find my beautiful baby Mojave boy...

Then I opened the second box excited to see my new beautiful spider het albino girl....and she was dead :( She overheated. I've got such a sad feeling. I mean I'm glad my Mojave made it but sad my spider overheated in a box. That's a terrible way to go.

Nice mojave! Sorry about your other snake however. How are you sure she overheated? What type of heat packs did they use?

Well, it was coming from a colder place to a warmer place and so he packed it to stay warm but coming here being as hot as it is, it must have overheated. When I opened the box it was extremely hot.

Re: Excitment then sadness
Have you notified the breeder yet of this and did you take pictures of the deceased animal?
-
Re: Excitment then sadness
That's really unfortunate. :( If it's not too much trouble, could you post a pic of the overheated box and heat pack?
I usually try to ship on the cool side. I received one shipment of snakes that was delayed in an unheated cargo hold of a plane, and at first I thought they were dead because they were nearly frozen. However, they eventually warmed up and all of them survived.
On the flip side, I've also heard of a lot of snakes dying because of being overheated during shipping.
-
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you had a live arrival guarantee and contacted the breeder/shipper. Please let us know how that goes.
-
Yes, I did notify the breeder and he apologized and said it's never happened before and he should have waited for it to be warmer on his end. He refunded my money but I'm still sad about it.
Here are pictures of the box and the snake.

Re: Excitment then sadness
Thanks for the pictures. I ship very similar to that, but I rarely use more than one heat pack and never taped to the bottom. I think that bottom one is what did it. I'm sorry for your loss, but congrats on your mojave.
-
So sorry for your loss. Breaks my heart to see that. The other one is beautiful.
-
Sorry about the Spider, she was a real looker. And, thank you for posting those pics so we can all learn a little more. I know that couldn't have been easy.
I can only hope that very HOT little Mojo will brighten your day. That little dude has a beautiful pattern and coloration!

Re: Excitment then sadness
Sorry about you loss, thats terrible. Thats why I'd rather not ship unless its completely necessary. Too much can happen, I know I would'nt want to be shipped in a box across the country.
-
Also, I was trying to share this on facebook. Not "like" it, not sure how to unlike it.
-
Man that sucks. Sorry you had to go through that. I never use 2 heat packs on a single small package. I always tape the heat pack on a side wall so the snake has a chance to get away from direct contact. Putting the pack on the bottom pretty much forces the animal to be on it. I also only use 40 hr packs cause they tend to have a slower heat build up. Dont know why i have a smile face on my post. I didnt put that there. Sorry

I had a hatchling pewter shipped to me and it was also doa. First experience I've had with a dead snake and it wasn't a pleasant one.
Really sorry to see that, its a horrible feeling when you open it and see that!

Congrats on the new Mojave and sorry for the unnecessary loss.

Re: Excitment then sadness
Was the snake directly on top of the bottom heat pack or was there something inbetween the heat pack and the snake? That really sucks, also kind of a bonehead move if it was packed directly on top of the heat pack, those things can het really hot. Sorry about the snake. Refund or not, I'd be pretty pissed.
-
Do you still have the dead snake?
-
Sooooo sorry to hear about that. I actually felt a little upset in my stomach seeing that picture and thinking about the poor thing trying to get away and survive.
However that Mojave really is awesome.

Your new mojave is gorgeous, I'm really sorry to hear about the spider. The only time I've ever have a snake shipped to me with two heat packs one was tape to the top and the other was actually outside the styrofoam.

Re: Excitment then sadness
It really sucks. I got a refund and he's also giving me a really good deal on some others. I still feel sad though. Poor thing didn't stand a chance. Anyway, he was packed with just some crunched up paper between her and the heat pack. Two packs was just too much though. The heat was coming from up top and down on the bottom. No where to escape the heat. She was coming from a really cold place but it's warm here so it was just way too much. I still have her because I just dont know what to do with her. I feel strange just throwing her away so maybe ill bury her? I dunno.
Sad.

Re: Excitment then sadness
I still can't get over this, it was on my mind a lot of the night at work. Just thinking about what I would do if that were to ever happen. I would for sure burry her or even maybe cremate her. Not only for peace of mind but also to be reminded of the things silly little mistakes can cause.

I had a specter male shipped to me earlier in the year with 2 human hand warmers, one on the bottom, one on the top, cooked the snake just like this one :(
How sad, it truly sucks to open a box to find a dead snake.
-
Its a suck suck situation. If anyone learns anything from this, this is how not to ship a snake. Never put a heat pack on the bottom. Tape it to a side wall. A snake in a small tight quarters box should never need 2 heat packs. If its that cold then you shouldnt be shipping.
-
Sorry to your spider, hopefully you find another.
-
sorry for your loss. it would have been a nice snake in any collection.
also as far as if a box needs a heat or cold pack, you always pack according to destination and never pack based on origin. too bad this happened. glad you got a refund. not sure if i would take them up on their discount offer.

Re: Excitment then sadness
That really sucks and I'm incredibly sorry for your loss. I can't imagine that, waiting to get it and then to find THAT. Thank you for posting about it as you have and for providing the details you did about how she was packed and the placement of the heat pack, etc. If nothing else, I know I learned something from that and will keep it in mind to never place a heat pack on the bottom when I ship. Your mojave is a smokin' hot little dude and I wish you all the best with him. Take care and again, thank you for sharing this in spite of the circumstances/emotions that I'm sure are involved.
