Maybe putting a deposit on this girl
What do you think? She's a pastel.
She's 190 grams born August 2011

-
She's cute but seems pretty brown for her age
-
She is a little light (weight wise) but she should be ok, she isn't the greatest pastel I've ever seen. She has a lot of brown for a pastel her age. otherwise she looks good. If she is just going to be a pet then I would say go for it if you liker her. If you plan on breeding her I might pass her up.
As far as I can tell she looks healthy and happy, what I think about her looks doesn't matter, what matters is what you think about her. Make sure that you are happy with her, You will be making a 20 + year commitment
-
hmmm...I do want to breed eventually and I was so happy when I found a female. =( I should keep looking I suppose? I just didn't want to have to ship a snake and since I found a local person I was also happy about that. Is there any way anyone can help me find a good looking female pastel?
I've been looking on fauna. I will look more.

I would wait until a little later into the year when a majority of breeders will have a lot of babies hatching. Then look for local reptile shows if you don't want to deal with shipping. It never hurts to wait to find something the really catches your eye and is a stunning example of the morph instead of getting the first one you find. :)

x2 i agree with this. Patience is a virtue ;)

At this point most of the nice ones have been picked out, Personally I would wait a month or 2 and see what becomes available as peoples clutches start hatching.
here are a few that I found:
66% het Clown, 50% het pied Pastel Male $250 (includes shipping) from Justin Kobylka

Pastel Female $200 (includes shipping) From Justin Kobylka

Pastel 100% het Genetic Stripe $250 (+ shipping) From Florida reptile room

True, but I have seen some males I do like. I just thought by getting a female it would be better so it can mature. I do plan on going to the reptile super show in the summer and getting another snake so depending on the sex of the snake I get now will depend on what I get at the show. Maybe I should get a male now and a female in the summer. I don't plan on breeding for a while..maybe a year or so any ways. I still have a lot to learn about breeding.
The only real reason I didn't want to deal with shipping is because I had a bad experience once with shipping a tarantula. It arrived to me dead but that was using USPS and I understand that snakes get shipped via Fed-Ex or something else that is better. So I can tough it out. =)
I still have time to make my decision. hehe No rushes.

If you buy a snake from a reputable breeder (Constrictors Unlimited, Justin Kobylka, Ralph davis reptiles, etc.) you really have nothing to worry about, they do it all the time. Now I agree with you on less known breeders. Not to say that I won't buy from them, because I have, but it is more of a risk.

Back in November when I purchased my 1.1 pastels from Justin Kobylka, I spend over a month looking so I just checked that placed I had been looking at then. As other people and myself have said this time of year there isn't the best selection to choose from, but if you look hard enough you might find something.

I would start with females over males. You can spend the summer looking for an outstanding female pastel and give her a year to grow and look for your male next year. Nice male pastels are easier to find people because most people aim for multi-gene males, such as a bumble bee or lemon blast, so you could probably find a nice one at any time.

Yeah I have been looking pretty hard but my mind was mixed on what I wanted. It went from Lesser, to Mojave, to Pastel...so I finally picked what was most reasonable in my budget right now which would be a pastel. I was so close to getting a lesser though but I didnt want to make the monthly payments. So I need to start my search over and try and find a pastel. =)
I found this one: http://pythonregius.com/pastelballpython-11f201.aspx
It's a female. =) She's not as yellow as I would like but I think you could only really get a real yellow pastel if you get a super pastel, right?
-
Looks like Justin Kobylka has some nice females so I am probably going to go ahead and get one from him. I am emailing him now. =)
-
There is a lengthy list of reputable guys that ship well. I will add Mark Petros, Rick Schlosser and Mike Bell.
If you plan to breed, I would get the highest quality you can afford.
Look at some of the special lines of Pastel like Lemon and Citrus as well. They seem to hold color pretty well.

I would wait and just find "that one" that you would really like, and shovel out the extra money for a really high quality pastel IMO. Even though the brightest pastels could still produce brown babies, I would still start with quality stock (no, I'm not saying the one posted isn't a quality pastel, but IMO I wouldn't breed her).
Here's my little pastel girl at roughly 200 grams in this pic:

I found her in person at a reptile expo, and I think you should wait to see pastels in person before deciding on one. Much better to see their true colors in person over a computer screen.

Jinx, thanks! I actually have thought about getting a lemon pastel. Just was unsure.
Daybreaker, your pastel is beautiful! I know it's probably much better to see the snakes in person. I am going to get another snake in the summer from the reptile show so whatever I get now I may not see in person but I will still be happy with I am sure.
Kinra, thanks for those links! I love those snakes! I am thinking maybe I should get one from him instead of justin kobylka. I will have to look at those pictures.

That is possibly the worst pastel I have ever seen lol
No you don't need to get a super pastel to get nice yellows, this is the female I got from Justin
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...a/IMG_0002.jpg
and here is the male I got at the same time

This is my favorite girl (and she is from Garrick - I already admitted that I am biased :P ):

The photos are a little old, but she is still stunningly yellow.

As I said before, I spent more than a month picking out my two pastels, and I went into it knowing that I was looking for pastels.
It can be hard to keep looking once you found something you like, but as long as you don't wait too long it will probably still be there so you might as well keep looking until you found the perfect snake

Bright colors (this will be extreme yellow as a baby and possibly a yellow/tan color as they get older) and blushing is what I look for. After that you can decide if you like reduced patterns or busy patterns better. :gj:

Awesome! I love the yellows in pastels. So pretty. I am debating whether or not to buy from Garrick or Justin. =P

If I were you I would contact both and see what they have, then go from there.

I agree. And I will have everything by the time I decide which snake I want too so that will be perfect. I've been looking for about a month. So if it takes longer fine.

Re: Maybe putting a deposit on this girl
It takes me forever to find pastels that I like. Sadly there are just too many brown ones out there, or ones that will brown out.
This my largest pastel. She was just over 2000g when the pic was taken. She kept her colors fairly well, but she still browned out more than Id have liked her to.

Re: Maybe putting a deposit on this girl
Late to the party - but you need to look for the least amount of orange as you can in a pastel and the most blushing head you can. You CAN get yellow pastels that aren't supers, I've just sold five of them recently.
Of the DeMeyer ones - I'd choose the fourth one linked. I have a DeMeyer pastel that's amazingly yellow.

I agree, she does look dark. If you aren't in a hurry I would keep an eye out for something brighter.

Re: Maybe putting a deposit on this girl
Of the females Garrick has available now - I'd choose this one. There's a reason she's priced higher than the other females.
