Ovulation picture

Every year I notice a lot of people posting threads asking "is this an ovulation?". Many first time breeders mistake "building" for an ovulation.

I had my first ovulation of the year over the weekend and this is a great example...

It is also very typical to have a tucked tail. IMO its quite different from a large meal.

This is something I needed to help me understand. I've seen lots of pictures, but I don't remember one so clearly showing not only the lump but the tucked tail.

I'm not a pro but my girl is definitely glowing and looks to be larger and when I attempt to palpate I feel bumps and she hasn't eaten in a while so I'd say it's looking good right now Sorry about the poor quality photos taken with my iPad lol

How long does this stage last? I hear a lot of people "missed" the ovulation.

Also, what is happening internally at this point? Is this the moment that the follicles and sperm meet for fertilization?

I have never gotten the "inside scoop", and I think that would make it easier for me to understand how the process works instead of just assuming the stork drops them off.

That girl looks as if she is still a ways out from ovulation. She is probably laying the way she is cause the tub is a bit tight.

I know I'm not Dave, but, 24 to 48 hours. My guess is people miss it because they are not over-looking their animals daily or just confusing building and ovulation.

From my understanding they move the follicles into the oviduct, fertilize them them with the males sperm and shell them into actual eggs at this point.

Mike, thanks for answering the questions. I agree that novice breeders often confuse building for ovulation as I did it my first year breeding. I would add that while the full blown ovulation may last a day or so, there are a few days before and after that it is still very noticable. Once you know what your looking at it is very easy to recognize.

I already posted an "is this an ovulation" thread this year! And it's my 3rd year breeding! I missed one last year because we were camping (at least I assume that's when it happened). And the first year, I thought she was still building, but then when I posted pics people were like NOPE that's her ovulation! I just didn't want to get my hopes up I guess.

However, in 2011 I had 2 females go 80-85 days between their POS and eggs.

You never know with snakes, I suppose.

Congrats on the ovy though, and YES aldebono, I've been incredibly curious as to the "inner workings" as well, but never been able to find real scientific facts about what actually happens.

Good! I am so glad I am not the only one. I was beginning to think it was the hobby's dirty little secret that everyone knew but never talked about.

Markus Jayne has said to have the best guide to what's happening with breeding, but it didn't help me at all. I need to know what's going on with the plumbing!

I am going to attempt it right now. Please correct me when you see something wrong.

Follicles- An egg follicle is a fluid-filled sac where an egg grows, matures and is released at ovulation to be fertalized. (Maybe not fluid filled sac? I believe this definition was referring to humans)

Building- follicles growing larger and larger, preparing to turn into eggs. Small risk of follicles being reabsorbed. Sperm is stored separately from follicles.

Pre-ovulation shed- (Need some help here) Why do they shed? Horomones? Preparing (shedding) so they can grow when they ovulate?

Ovulation- follicles "drop" into the oviduct, fertilization occurs at this time and the shelling of the egg occurs. Lasts 24-48hrs. (Thanks Mike). No need to keep pairing after this time as fertilization has already occurred.


Just thought to explain this a little/just thought about it. The sperm is stored separate of the eggs up to the point of ovulation. If breeding multiple males, the sperm is all stored in the same place and in the same way, let's call it a genetic cocktail.
Follicles move into the oviduct, genetic Molotov cocktail of sperm meet the follicles (The Big Bang). That's where the magic happens folks. Multiple sired clutches.

Thanks for sharing Dave. Ovy's never get old, love it. Also like you said, I think this helps alot when people are trying to figure out if their snake is ovulating. I wish people would post more ovy's.
