    Got eggs? (Dialup warning!)
    Photos from March 9th...my female Malaysian yellow blood laid her first clutch...wheeee! :)

    First off, here's a pic of Saffron with her hubby, "Mello Yello." Normally she's a brightly colored animal...I was surprised how much she darkened up while gravid!

    Here she is being a fabulous mom!!!

    Final count was 15 perfect eggs, no duds or slugs. The eggs were smaller than what I'd expected (bloods tend to lay big eggs), but I'm certainly NOT complaining!!!!

    Duds = eggs that look perfect, but when candled, have no veins.

    Slugs = immature ovum.

    Wrinkly egg - she laid eggs outside of her nest box, so I would assume that's one that conformed to a wrinkle in the newspaper she laid them on while the egg was still very soft. Happens all the time.

    do you mark the eggs with x's so you know what is the correct position to incubate them in?

    can't wait to see hatchling pics!!

    Pretty much. I just put an X on the top of each egg to which way is up in the event that they're jostled around while taking them from mom (which rarely happens).

    um i still dont quite understand all of the tecincal mumbo-jumbo u just said but basicly

    a dud is an egg that didnt develop what so every like the chicken eggs we eat all the time

    and a slug is a baby snake that didnt develop properly and i take it that they are usually not alive?

    Before an egg is an egg, it is an ova (follicle). Slugs are ovum that were not mature enough to be fertilized when the snake ovulated. They usually come out as small, yellow/orange/brownish egg-shaped lumps. Duds are fully shelled eggs that are simply infertile (i.e. no veins when candled).
