Rodent Pro vs Mice Direct, what do you prefer?

Thinking about ordering some bulk F/T, with almost 10 snakes to feed its time to buy in bulk!

I would like to know whose tried either. What you liked, what you didn't like. Any bad experiences, and good? Pretty much all info is useful. If you have a different company to suggest, let me know!

I use The Mouse Factory and could not be happier.
I got a few orders from Rodent Pro (years ago, granted), the first few were fine but then they started coming with broken limbs and covered in urine/feces, really nasty. I called about the last order I placed, they apologized and sent another right out. It was equally gross and broken, there were a few headless rats in that order.
Switched to TMF and haven't looked back. They are always clean, whole and just incredibly well packed.

Is there a price difference in the 2? Do you ever get stuck together rats (I hate that)? Like the OP I'm sure, I would pay a little more for quality :D sorry to Jack the thread, I was going to ask the same question :p

I have used Rodent Pro for years. I have no complaints, but different customers have different experiences.

I like Layne Labs. Everytime I order from RP or MD it seems the rats are ragedy looking. Layne labs always has nice, clean, non-bloody, white rats. They don't smell, and they never stick together.

I bought mice from RodentPro at a show once and they looked as if they'd died of starvation and they caused loose stools in my snakes.

The ones I just got from MiceDirect were the ones pictured on my "Scary Mice!" thread.

They had scabs, bald spots, weird puncture wounds and were generally poor quality.

I'll never buy from either company again.

I'm going back to the last show we attended to get more of the great quality feeders that sadly, I didn't buy enough of that day.

I've heard good things about Layne Labs, though.

I have bought from rodentpro, mice direct, and now the big cheese rodents factory (they are right down the street from me! No shipping!)

For me, big cheese was the best--the rats you get are um, "processed" specifically FOR your order, they don't have a stockpile of frozen rodents where they just grab the size. This means you can even ask for specific orders. I've heard of people with particularly picky snakes who wanted to have gender specific orders and such and they were able to do that for them. They were the freshest rats I had ever seen to be honest, probably because they had only been frozen that morning. Nice clean packaging as well.

I did have a fine experience with both the other companies, but nothing as fresh as the big cheese rodent factory. Getting a call as the order is being first put in the freezer is great and I guess it just made me feel like I was getting better 'meat' for my snakes. Plus I guess since I don't have to pay shipping, that's quite nice as a bonus as well! :rolleyes: So I stick with them.

My biggest problems with rodent pro/mice direct---Rodent pro gave me weird sizes in my order. The rat hoppers were sometimes a little bigger or smaller, some were a lot bigger or smaller. It wasn't too big of a deal, but if I had a smaller snake that wasn't still growing, a lot of the larger ones would have ended up being wasted. As far as mice direct, the rodents were fine--maybe a little 'stale' looking compared to what I saw now at big cheese, but certainly hadn't 'gone bad'.. The packaging was funky though.. They were all just sort of tossed into the bag in a big..messy..knot. It would take a good few minutes to pull just one out while undoing the tangled feet and ears and..oh goodness that one's ear just came off because it was frozen to the other one and :puke: It was kind of gross at times. Just having to pull them apart and worry if an arm was going to come off it was so tightly attached to the pile. Thankfully our snakes were eating quite a lot of them at the time(we needed a larger size to be honest, so they were eating multiples), so it was okay if you couldn't separate just one and had to pull out 3-4 that were tied together.

No, they are not stuck together at all. The rats (small and larger) are placed on styrofoam meat trays, all lined up and neat/organized. Mice are just in a lump yet not really stuck together too badly, they separate very easily.

I just did a price compare on both, and in the end, rodent pro is cheaper.

I used rodent pro a few times, and didn't have any bad experiences, but recently decided I wanted to support local suppliers. I now use our local reptiles shop, their supplier, and also going to try out glacier rodents. Means I can pick up (no shipping!) and the rodents are much fresher

I use loxahatchee rodent.......good quality and never no problems plus cheaper then each......just my 2cents

Just throwing in a 2nd thumbs up for Big Cheese Rodent Factory. My local guy has been out of stock for a while, so I picked up a couple of trays of rats from BCRF while on a business trip with the boyfriend. They are plump, clean, and packaged really nicely. They were arranged on a styrofoam tray in neat little rows, and the pull apart with 0 effort. The snakes seem to really like them, and that's after being spoiled with fresh-frozen awesome local rats! I will certainly use them again.

I've never used RP or MD, but I've heard enough bad things to completely scare me off either of them.

I ordered from Rodent Pro once and never will again. The way they bag up the rats is beyond silly.

I think I'll try Layne Labs (or was it Big Cheese?) next. I hear that they actually neatly package and vacuum seal them.

I am a Rodent Pro fan. I've used them for years without any problems. The only thing I will have to say is that the size of "small rats" varied from order to order...sometimes on the big side, sometimes on the small side....But overall I love the quality and service.

I picked up some bulk frozen feeders (pup to med rats) from Layne Labs and Global Breeders Assoc. at the Pomona show last weekend. Since it was the last day of he show, Layne sold out of several sizes, but what I did buy from them were top notch. Will definitely pick up more from them at NARBC in Sept. GBA had the right sizes I was looking for and their meds. were on the styrofoam meat trays lined up straight. I would recommend either one but I believe GBA only offers local pickup and at shows.

Isn't rodent pro the one that's to blame for the toxic rats that were killing boas?

Last 2 Repticon shows I went to MD was there and I passed both times due to the way they were packed and they looked just dirty. I have ordered from Big Cheese and they are nicely packed,healthy looking and clean. Bushhill rodents ar by far the best I have bought, he comes to another local show. Colby @ Bushhill will ship but the last time I got a quote for shipping it was high. Of course Repticon has a deal with MD and will not let any other rodent vendors sell.

I've been exclusively using Rodent Pro for my frozen rodent needs since 2008 and haven't had any problems. I'd like to learn more about the toxic rat thing though if you have any links.
