What inspired your herps names?
((Sorry for typos, doing this from my phone.))
This something I always wonder when I hear the names people give their pets. I am the type of person that absolutely has to name every animal I come into contact with. Haha.
As for me, right now Kaa is the only little guy I have at the moment- and his name was taken from the The Jungle Book. As much as I love the Disney adaption of it, I was more inspired by the book – in which Kaa was one of Mowgli’s best friends and mentor. I felt it was fitting for my first snake, as the Jungle Book is what inspired my initial love of them when I was younger.
I’m going to be adopting another Ball soon from a customer at work who bought one for her son. Her son has not been taking care of it and neglecting it. She’s still too scared of it to take care of it on her own, but she doesn’t want it to be left mistreated and remembered I had mentioned I had a Ball as well. Soo… I’ve found myself needing to think of another name…. when… I flipped the channel and saw “the Princess and the Frog” for the first time…
I am not convinced that weather it’s a male or female, that I have to name it Juju. Lol
So, why did you all name your animals what you did?
Also, for the laughs… here’s what endeared me to the name Juju:

My girls name is kimbur. Its a spin off of the name of a really expensive pistol I would like to own someday. I guess you could say I have two very expensive hobbies. Lol. Anyway the name seems to fit. She is sleek, powerful, and beautiful.

Looove it! I collect art and old books... So I understand you in terms of expensive hobbies haha.

Ok...but be warned, I'm a gigantic nerd
Calypso (100% het pied) - Means "she that conceals." ya know, since she's "concealing" the gene for piebald?
Esme - Edward's mom from Twilight
Lara - from the Lara Croft video game (husband named her)
Zelda - from The Legend of Zelda video game (husband named her)
Mrs. Eaves - the name of one of my favorite typefaces (I'm a graphic designer, it's what we do, haha!)
Gypsy - just liked the name
Jethro - after Gibbs from NCIS
Ulysses - means "to hate." when we brought him home he was quite strikey
Dexter - from the book/movie "Something Borrowed."
Zombie (ghost corn) - I dunno...zombies, ghost corn. Somehow it fit. I was very sleep deprived after NARBC...
Albus - after Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter
Fin - just liked it
Stetson (blood python) - husband said his head looked like a square toed cowboy boot
Pixel - she was so little and has this granite speckling. Pixels are the smallest screen element. Yeah...nerd haha
Henry - just liked it
Octavia - the name traditionally given to the 8th daughter in Victorian England. She was our 8th snake.
Bodoni - another typeface name
Banshee (Mexican Black Kingsnake) - She's black, banshees are an omen of death...seemed to fit.
Morticia (Anery white sided brooksi king) - has a long black strip down her back. Morticia Addams has long black hair down her back. Husband made the connection.
Cornelia - she's a cornsnake...CORNelia...haha!? Get it?
Tangie (tangerine Honduran milksnake)
Flash (honduran milksnake) - because he's fast!
Jack & Jill - rescues. Came together.
Irwin (bearded dragon) - named after Steve Irwin. Steve was Australian? Beardies are from Australia? Haha!
Ok...I just did that all from memory of the rack space so I might've left a few out. And now that y'all think I'm a complete nerd...I'm out! Haha!

Very cool names everyone:gj:. So far all mine are from " Gone in 60 Seconds". I have Sway, Memphis, and Tumbler. I have a feeling if I aquire to many more I may either name them after the "Shawshank Redemption" characters, Greek Gods, or Military Alphabet...lol... :salute:
-
Mitch, from the movie road trip, even though its not the same species, I got him from my uncle while on a road trip to california
Loki, I was looking through one of those pet names websites and I liked it, then was informed that loki is the name of I think a paegan? god who was a shift shaper, but it fits because she looks like she wants to rip your throat out, but shes a total sweetheart
Brita, she was given to us by my brothers friend who let his friends daughter name her, and of course she named her after herself lol
Jack, I bought him from a pet store and was holding him, and he just screamed jack for some reason
Stripper, he was black and white banded kingsnake, and that was the first thing that came to mind
Bob and Tito, they were my blue (bob) and green (tito) parakeets, I have no idea why I named them that, but I did, people keep telling me those are names from some movie, but ive never had any idea what they were talking about
Im a huge fan of horror movies, so I plan to some day put together a group of snakes to name after the characters of my all time favorite, house of 1000 corpses (mother firefly, captain spaulding, otis, baby, tiny, dr. satan), I cant remember the other brothers name or the grandpas name, but that will just give me a reason to watch it again:D
-
Minnie the het pied: After Minnie Mouse.
Mickey, the pied: Mickey Mouse
Dorothy the pied: After a woman I knew who had many children.
Lily, the mojave: After Lily Langtry.
Marilyn, the pastel yb: After another, more famous blonde.
Darth Jackass: Because the name fits him to a "T."
-
My female normal is named Zola, which a Zulu word for "tranquility" and BPs have a very tranquil reputation, so it fits. :P Since ball pythons are from Africa, I wanted an African name, but one that had nothing to do with The Lion King. haha. I spent hours playing around on various translation websites til I found what I wanted.
Interestingly, about a month after I got her, I head the novel "Nervous Condition" by Titsi Dangarembga which is about the hardships faced by women in what is now Zimbabwe. It was full of GREAT names I can use for future snakes. =D (It is also an amazing novel on every possible level. Just so you know ;))
-
I originally started with my male normal Julius Squeezer, and was only planning on having one. Well, we all know how that goes
He got his name because I was currently working on my main project for my western civ class where we had to watch a movie (chosen from a list) and write a paper on how accurate the movie was historically. I chose Cleopatra (the original from 1963) due to my obsession with ancient Egypt. Of course, Julius Caesar was one of the main characters. I thought the tweaked name was fitting for my new guy lol.
Then of course I got more, so they all kind of went along with people in history, starting with my male pastel William Snakespeare, then my mojave Vincent Van Mojo...etc lol. Only one of my Ts have this kind of name, my pink toe tarantula, named after Sandra D from Grease...tweaked to Sandra T...the pink lady :P
My only problem is now I'm running out of the creativity to tweak real names to be snake-like. Sooo...now they are named by their personalities. I've gotten lucky so far that the names I've given them fit them. But my newest male yellowbelly is named Socko. Why?
Because he reminds me of a Socko :D
-
Mine have all been named after characters from Pokemon.
Koga- Gym leader that uses poison Pokemon. I didn't want to name him Ekans or Arbok because most Pokemon fans with snakes have probably done that haha.
Charizard- One of my cresties who has a nice "flame" as it's known. Charizard is a fire lizard, so it fits.
Slowbro- My other crestie, who didn't move an inch on the way home. Slowbro is obviously very slow. Almost like a water sloth haha. Unfortunately, Slowbro is now more active than Charizard, which kinda ruins things for me.
And then there's Shelly. I didn't name her, the person I bought her from did. I think the name has something to do with the color of her eyes...
-
I love big names for little snakes, lol. Mine are inspired from gods (Roman, Egyptian, Greek), mythology, biblical heros/figures, and literature. See my signature for the list!
-
Usually my girlfriend names them for me. She normally looks at them for awhile and decides what they remind her of.
-
Re: What inspired your herps names?
Akina - I have no idea how I came up with this one. I think I just put letters together.
Sadis - When she was a baby, she'd eat her prey while it was still alive, so we said she was Sadistic, and it became Sadis for short.
Isis - After the goddess. - she will be a big powerful boa, I figured it was fitting.
Nyoka - my friend's snake. She says it means snake, though I can't remember what language.
Shane - from a t.v show.
Bonnie - named before I got her.
Juji - Can't remember where I got this name but I feel like it meant something in another language.
Ari - friend's snake.
Brieder - means brother in Yiddish I think. My husband named him.
Juju - Juji's daughter
Loch - her clutchmate was named Ness, but unfortunately Ness died.
Thriller - got him on Halloween. He has a theme song. :)
Xefaud - from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Auxy - means Golded Boy - Au for gold, XY for boy.
Ross - rescued, on his tracking card we just put rescue and began calling him Ross for short.
Clyde - named before I got him - came with Bonnie.
Tak - Saw the name on some end credits for a movie and liked it.
Billy Jean - Thriller's daughter.
Cornelia - my friend's corn snake (I take care of her snakes until she can have them)
Zim - from Invader Zim
Since Zim is an alien cartoon character I figured it was only fitting to give her children space names.
Venus
Callisto
Io
Umbrial
Osiris - ghost corn. Named before I got him.
Sol -meaning sun - my leopard gecko
Iggy - king snake. Named before I got her.
That's all the reptiles. I hope I didn't forget anyone.
-
Some of my names are inspired by mythology, others are because I was looking for a name that started with that letter and some just came to me and seem to fit. Now because I name them all I'm going to list them all (It starts off in the order they were acquired and this is just the ball pythons). :P
0.1 Normal - Lily (This name just came to me, I wanted to name my first snake Salazar from Harry Potter, but I got a female instead of a male)
0.1 Spider - Houdini (I used to use tanks and he would spend all night trying to get out)
0.1 Pastel Yellow Belly ph pied - Aphrodite (For the Greek Goddess and it fits because she has a heart on the back of her neck)
1.1 Spotnose - Bonnie and Clyde (I was looking for two names that go together)
0.1 Butter - Bella (Just seemed to fit)
0.1 ph Caramel Glow - Nova (Because she's so bright)
1.0 Enchi - Zar (Short for Balthazar, I was on a Charmed kick at the time. Little did I know he would be a little demon, he still tries to draw blood when I handle him )
0.1 Lemon Pastel - Isis (I think this is where I started using the alphabet)
0.1 Bumble Bee - Kali
0.1 Normal - Ella
0.1 Spider - Delmi
0.1 Pastel - Marri
0.1 Bumble Bee - Stella (Because she's just amazing)
0.1 Cinny - Pandora
0.1 Het Hypo - Rose
0.1 Fire - Yasmine
1.0 Pastel ph Hypo - Godric (Taken from Harry Potter, I was also looking for a G name at the time)
0.1 Normal - Vega
0.1 Pastel - Thalia
1.0 Pastel Yellow Belly - Quincy
0.1 Normal - Wilma
0.1 Pastel - Pascal (I didn't name this one)
0.1 Pewter - Mist (Someone on the forum suggested this as a name and I really liked it)
0.1 ph Hypo - Jasey (I didn't name this one)
In terms of other snakes I have:
1.1 Anery KSB - Fallon and the female isn't named yet
1.1 Hypo Jungle Boas - Candy and Kain
1.1 Hog Island Boas - Mr. Piggy and Oriana (I didn't name the male)
0.1 Dumeril's Boa - Helena (I plan to get a male and name him Demetrius)
Even my geckos are named:
2.2.2 Crested Geckos - Spook, Ivan, Cleopatra, Anabella, Jingle bells (my 7 year old sister named this one) and Edgar (I was hope this one would be a male but now I am hoping for a female so this name is subject to change)
0.1 African Fat Tail - Coco
3.4 Leopard Geckos - Elzar, Bailey (soon to be renamed to El Diablo), Fae, Sunshine, Hellfire, Gabriella, and Brat
-
Alpha, Echo & Whiskey are military phonetic alphabet AND characters from the short lived Joss Whedon show "Dollhouse". The next female will be Sierra and next male Victor.

Re: What inspired your herps names?
Well Chaos came to us in an unexpected way. He's a rescue. He had a broken spine which was caused from a household of idiots who had NO idea how to handle a young snake! I looked up names of gods and i figured Chaos fit him..he came from a chaotic background. Now thinking back we should have named him Loki god of mischief since he loves to escape and get into things when i open his cage door!! But nah we'll keep his as chaos. Maybe my next snake.....hmmm idk got my eye on another snake already.
-
Looking at these makes me feel so...not creative. XD Most of mine just have "people" names because that amuses me:
Edgar- Bumblebee
Edna- Het albino
Beatrice- Normal dinker-ish girl
Bruce- Patternless leopard gecko (he's pink and yellow and ADORABLE)
And of course, Frank the frilled dragon. He's the only one with a namesake (from Rescuers Down Under). As soon as I finish grad school and settle down somewhere I plan on getting some sort of monitor (probably ackie or a green tree monitor) named Joanna. XD
-
Mine is pretty lame. but trout species. I love to fish and trout fishing is my favorite or all.

:P That was me Kinra. :) Glad the name stuck!
Normal BPs:
Prince Oberyn (female): Character from the A Song of Ice and Fire series
Princess Pandemonium (male): He's seriously a primadonna PITA.
Tortuga: Means Turtle in spanish, but I have an obsession with Pirates of the Caribbean. :P
Peekaboo: She came with this name, but it fits her perfectly. She's been nicknamed Sneekaboo because of her fantastic ability to get all 4 feet of her off of you without you noticing, before you realize she is actually in the recliner, and not on your lap where you last left her.
Sable: Was named after something..not fit for general conversation, so I just redubbed her this as it was a simpler form, and much more socially acceptable. :P
Typhon: Someone on this forum suggested it. It is the mythological titan and also a reworking of the letters in Python.
Icabod Craine: I got him near Halloween, and my boyfriend wanted to call him Icky.
100% Het Pied BPs:
Sstheno: One of the Gorgon Queens from Greek Mythology.
Argonaut: Jason and the Argonauts are from Greek Mythology as well.
Pueblan Milksnake:
No Feet!: I didn't name her. But she definitely does not have feet.
IJCP:
Stella: Boyfriend named her.
Cats:
Little: She was smaller than a measuring cup when I got her at 2 weeks old. I started calling her Little One and it stuck.
Tybot: She sounds and acts like a robot. Its amazing.
Doctor Strangelove: I named her Doc Strange, because she was very odd when we got her, boyfriend named her Doctor Strangelove.
Amphibians:
Tree Frogs - Birch and Maple. They're tree frogs. Lighter one is Birch, darker one is Maple.
Brown Toad - HYPNOTOAD. He looks just like a hypnotoad when he looks at you. It's scary.
Chubby Frog - Fatty! Hes a tubby chunker. I love him.

Re: What inspired your herps names?
My dogs name was Leo (short for Leonidas).
We rescued his brother from a friend who could no longer care for him, he had already been named Spartacus (funny coincidence right?).
We adopted my Great Dane from my fiance's grandfather after he passed.
I have four jones armidillo lizards I just call the Titans.
And my breeding pair of BP's I just bought are named Hades and Persephone.
I have a huge colony of African Cichlids, to many to name. So I just call them all my little bastards.
-
Mr.Biggles is from Austin Powers.
Godfrey is from the 1940s movie My Man Godfrey.
Skelator originally came from the dog on the movie 50/50 but most people assume its He-Man so I just go with that.
Gir is from Invader Zim.
Star is Firestar after my dads revolver.
My mom named her corn snake Abby because she"s a normal so now she's "Abby Normal"
-
Bacardi, Corona, Tequila, Skyy, Midori, Mojito, Gin, Kahlua, Stoley, Amaretto and Cosmo. :gj: Kinda self explanatory. My wife's snakes all have random names.

I think I am going to start doing this with all the (snake) offspring I produce! I use this in general, everyday conversation (telling people reference numbers) and everyone assumes I was in the military. But no! My dad was a pilot and this is what they use for referencing other planes in the area (by their tail numbers). What a great idea!
-
I named my Leucistic Texas Rat snake Luna in reference with the moon. The moon glows a bright white, and so shall my snake when she hits adulthood. :gj:
-
Oh wow, an explosion of replies since I posted haha.
Just finished reading them all, and gotta say... Love all the names I see so far!
Other than herps, I also have two Betta fish - Neptune and Ghost. Neptune got his name due to how large he is and his bright blue and green coloring. He definitely reminded me of a mini sea god. As for ghost, he is albino and looks almost translucent. I can see through his fins and the name just seemed to suit him so well.
I also have a rather portly wiener dog named Rusty. I was three when I named him, mainly because that's what color he was haha.
-
Re: What inspired your herps names?
well basically i named him Azrael after archangel of death.the name has been with me since i was 15 and as he arrived to me i noticed his designs and said to my wife thats him.. Azrael

-
Re: What inspired your herps names?
I havent yet purchased my snake, but I will be naming it either Mozzy or Mrs Suit. These names are inspired by the tv show White Collar, which I am obsessed with!!!
-
Ramses just seemed like a cool name for a snake. I'm a huge Egyptology nerd and Ramses II was possibly the greatest rule Egypt has ever known, so I figured it was a name that demanded respect.
After that I decided all my named snakes will be named after historical or mythological figures. LeVeau is named after Marie LeVeau, the famous voodoo priestess from New Orleans. For some reason, boas are the species that come to mind first when I think of snakes and voodoo. It fits, too, cuz she knows how to make people fear her without actually doing anything, lol.
Mojave's name doesn't really have a meaning, aside from the fact that his mate's name was Sonora and they were the American desert buddies.
I used to have a turtle named Flash, just for the sheer irony. That and I totally didn't steal the idea from the tortoise in Daddy Day Care or anything.
I really want a pair of corns named Bonnie and Clyde and a black blood named Bathory.
-
Let's see, my snake names came from a few places: Star Trek, Greek Mythology, and a Black Metal band called Dimmu Borgir
-
Cleopatra- Normal female BP, read about the queen wearing a BP around her wrist and named her that
Anthony- Mojave male, from "Anthony and Cleopatra"
Fulvia- Normal female, another of Mark Antony's wives
Tzar- Firefly male, Caesar
Fluffy- Normal (hopefully) female, named when I got her
Slate- Anery female corn, just her color
Jasper- Okeetee male corn, also describing color
-
Dates, alphabet, numbers
Year hatched, genus and species abbreviation, numbered as hatched, sex if and when determined
So: 2002PA01F
"Real" names happen occasionally if the inspiration hits.
-
Almost All our names come from tv/movies
Chumley, male normal, from Pawn Stars
Sweet Dee, pastel female, from always sunny
Dennis, male spider, always sunny
Stewie, male mojave, family guy
Precious normal female, from precious (she is more commonly known as big momma though)
Jack, male pied, originally from Nightmare before christmas)
Rose, female het pied, from titanic and fits with jack.
Little Bit never got an "official name" and since she was so tiny when we got her the nickname stuck.
Then we have the bearded dragons:
Snooki because shes chubby and orange
Jwoww and The situation because it fit the theme.
The monitors:
Chomper, the sav, from Land before time
Superman, the nile, came to us named and I'm pretty sure "he" is a she
Lastly there is Kenny Powers or KP for short, our sulcata
sent from my EVO
-
I was going to go the all Greek/Roman gods, but it seems a lot of people went this route.
I did name my first Hades before I decided to go with differebt names.
Snatch, because how quickly he'll grab any and everything you offer.
Capone, i just thought it to be cool
Gypsy, actually part of my heritage, Romanian.
Calypso, from Pirates of the Carribean
Shrinked, my 4y/o came up with that one.
I just go with things that catch my attention somehow, or when in doubt go with the kids choice:gj:

Re: What inspired your herps names?
"Anicho" is my ball python, it's an Old German name which means "ancestor" or "predecessor." I had been reading up on the history of voodoo & Creole culture since I'm going to New Orleans in the spring, and I discovered this name during that process for something unrelated, so it kind of stuck. Also, I intend to get another snake later down the road, so for the first snake to be the "predecessor" made sense.
-
My pets names are kinda random, but I'll try to explain them.
Lily the normal ball python was named that because I like that name.
Thor and Isis are named after the norse god and egyptian goddess. My dad owed me some money so I said that he ordered a pair of anery 100% het albino sand boas he wouldn't owe me any more. They are the first animals I've ordered online, from VMS Herps, and should be here on Wednsday.
Quin is an unknown leopard gecko morph, he was named by my sister after the last name of a band member
Rainne is a snow bold het eclipse leopard gecko from HISS and has the middel name of the same band member from the band Tegan and Sara
El Scorcho is a super hypo tangerine leo named after the Weezer song
Neko and Hitler are black and white kittens, around five months old, Hitler is long haired with a moustache(she plays fetch!) and Neko has short haired and means cat in Japanese
Garbage is an creme tabby, a little younger than a year old, and was named after the cat on the Office and because he likes playing in garbage.
Spooky is an eight year old black cat that I named a long time ago. She used to be afraid of Lily, but now she cuddles her. Hmm... a cat that cuddles snakes. Weird.
Hoobie is a irish setter/golden retriver mix with yellow wolf eyes. He came with his name.
Zoey is a pointer/black lab mix that came with her name
I think I covered them all.
-
Only 3 of my balls have names. I couldn't think of anything good for the others
1) Albino - No Pig (short for No Pigment)
2) Pin Stripe - Taiga (derived from Tiger because he is high white. He also has a lot of white outlining on his stripes that reminds me of a Tiger)
3) Het. Albino - Baby Maker 5000 (she was possibly gravid when I got her)
--------------------
Black Pastel - The Noodle (I bought her for my boyfriend. He named her)
Super Pastel - The Noodle 2 (My boyfriend and I both rescued him. But he's staying at the bf's house)
-
All of my ball pythons were named from a movie. Princess Mononoke.
I've had to look up cast and crew names by this point, since there weren't that many characters with names, but I hit most of the main characters, with the exception of a few that just didn't fit for a snake to me..
My husband started out with a spider who of course got named Bitsy. Then he got a super pastel to make bees and I picked out Charlotte. His busy patterned pinstripe I helped name Freckles. And his newest baby, a lesser male, I finally named Romeo because hubby could not come up with anything.
Gale

The inspiration for our snake names is all over the place.
Our first normal is named Indiana...I decided on that name long ago when I first decided I wanted a snake. After Indiana Jones (a favorite character of mine).
Lillith, another normal, we named after a Supernatural (tv show) character, not because she resembled the character, but because the name sounded very snake-like.
Loco, our spider, came with that name, but it fits him.
Pandora (pastel) just sounded nice.
Lois and Clark, our 100% het pied couple. Named because when we finally have a pied it'll be our super snake!
Zuri, another normal, also adopted and already named.
Boone, our Pastel hed red axanthic we bought under the impression that we were buying a mojave, and in the video game Fallout: New Vegas, which I was playing at the time, you are in the Mojave desert and you have a sidekick named Boone. He isn't a mojave, but the name stuck.
-
How deadly my snake is when he strikes at prey! Stryker :)
-
Re: What inspired your herps names?
Most of the names of my snakes came from Stargate Atlantis but I don't even call my snakes by these names. I have come up with nicknames for them. I don't call any of my pets by their rightful names because they are each individuals and I just give them nicknames. If I told you the nicknames you would laugh at me hysterically, lol.
-
Our first snake, Ella, was named that because I wanted something simple but elegant and pretty - 2 descriptions that aren't usually appied to snakes although I think they should be.
I picked Jasper for my male boa because it just seemed to fit him.
Hunter was already named and I thought it was appropriate.
Peaches came about with a bit more creativity. I was trying to think of something along the lines of Ella when I told my parents I'd bought my first boa. My dad thought I was crazy (again) as he HATES snakes. But we have a pretty special relationship. When I was a kid, his special nickname for me was Peaches and he still sometimes calls me that. So I named my baby boa Peaches after my dad. When I told him, he hollered "Why'd you do that?!?!?"
:rofl::rolleyes::rofl:
