I think widows are gorgeous spiders! They have that perfect "spider body" - long thin legs, big fat pointy abdomen and they're shiny jet black! I found a dead widow when I was living in Tennessee - the red hourglass sent chills down my spine but I was still intrigued. Is she a pet or just a house guest?

Beautiful, Danny! I almost got a widow yesterday, Latrodectus mexicanus, but I'm putting it off. How big is she?

My house is about fifty years old, it's full of widows, and from what I've been told, the venom(at least the venom of one's indigenous to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia) isn't all that much worse than a bee sting. Maybe it'll make you nauseated. That's what I've been told, and I grew up thinking they could put you into a state of paralysis and even kill you.

I was petrified they were all over the framing in my basement, but I never saw any in the upper two levels of my house. Than I woke up with one nestled into my chest hair. I nearly :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:, but they're not aggressive and I patiently "removed" him.

She is a pet but not one that I go out and play fetch with and give her belly a rub I respect her and I know my limits with her just like keeping venomous snakes the widows are just smaller. Alex ill try to get a pic with something in it for a size reference for you. There really gorgeous creatures. And bsavage we live in an older house to and I find them all the time outside in our buildings but I have never once found one inside or under the house other then the ones we keep lol

I dont think that keeping a venemous spider would be any different than keeping a venemous snake. I dont have experience with them at all but it seems like caring for a spider would be easier than a snake. I dont like spiders though so if I ever were to get one I would probably want a venemous one so I would have an excuse not to hold it lol :p

Is that an egg sac? If so, how many of these little monsters will be crawling out soon?

Give me a 30 foot snake fine, I can handle that. But if you stick a 2 centimeter spider in front of me there is going to be trouble.

Black widows are beautiful in their own way. I think it is pretty cool that you have one.

What do you do when they hatch? Are the tiny babies still as dangerous, venemous wise, as adults?

A bee sting? Someone misinformed you terribly. Unless you have an allergy to bees. :P

Descriptions of a widow bite include horrendous painful cramps, sweats, and pure misery. Most healthy adults survive easily enough, but it may be deadly to small children and the weak and elderly.

There is an antivenon, but many people elect not to receive it, because once you do, you can't safely receive it ever again.

The babies won't have as much venom to inject, but you will likely notice it if you are successfully bitten.

The problem with widow bites is that, being neurotoxic, there is very little pain when they occur. The pain starts later, when the venom goes to work, affecting your nerves and forcing your muscles to cramp into knots. Some people have only a minor reaction, but a full blown response is something you would remember to the end of your days.

A beautiful little spider, but one to be thoroughly respected, like any hot.

Beautiful spider, man, I catch hobos and wolf spiders once in a while around here (when I find nice big ones anyway) and feed/care for them for as long as they last. Widows seem a little intimidating to me though, haha. Nothing to be trifled with, but you seem on top of your game :)

Yea shes pretty calm for the most part. Ive kept younger ones that like to flip out and run laps around there cages when you open them. But she always stays pretty calm when you open hers up.

Really? I'd take a black widow bite over a hobo any day! Feeling sick and crampy is way better than having your skin rot and die off!

Haha, it's definitely a goal not to get bit ;) Don't make a habit of handling them, just put them in pretty glass jars and keep them like houseplants. I can certainly keep them alive longer, lol

First off I will say, if it has more than 4 legs, I'm not messing with it :colbert::rofl:

However, even with the 6+ legged creatures I can see their beauty and admire it (at a distance of course :p ). About the only ones I can't hardly stand to look at are any type of roaches, millipedes and centipedes. Even in pictures they freak me out!

That being said, I think black widows are some of the most beautiful spiders in the world. They're very sleek and elegant looking to me.

I'm guessing she had already mate and ate (mated and eaten the male) before you found her? Or did you find her a mate and throw them together? :spid0r: How long from time of mating do they lay an egg sac? How long does it take for babies to come out of the sac from the time it's spun? (IIRC, the sacs are spun, right?)
