Ultrasound
Who uses ultrasound machines? Where did ya get em? How much are they? I hate palpating, I suck at it. Just curious on the machines used? I have seen some cool portable vet ones and what not, but those r pretty expensive...

I have one...Paid about $3500 for it...Never use it...Much easier and quicker to palp.

If you know how to palp it may be easier I've seen tons of videos and have tried I just don't know what I'm feeling for. Lumps right? How do I know they are follicles and not poop? I posted a question about this once and no one posted.

I always look for spherical bumps on opposing sides of the snake in the 2/3 - 3/4 the length of her body. Let her move against you, for instance, I just head my girls back into their tubs when I palp and they are generally pretty easy to do. Don't be afraid to squeeze, it won't hurt them and will be the only way to feel the follicles and just a little tip, use a snake bag or pillow case over your squeeze hand to reduce friction and it will be 100x easier to find what you're looking for.

Jon,
Which one did you pick up? I was looking at some and the prices ( and I'm sure quality ) are all over the place.

This is what I do and it works great! I am still not too good at feeling for small follicles, but the bigger ones are easy to feel using this method.

So you feel on the sides? All the videos I have seen appear to me that they are trying to feel mid belly.

I have never used an U/S on a snake only materials and not very much of that. The ones I have worked with are not as easy as it seems it is likely that you should factor in the cost of training (friendly RVT maybe...) on top of the unit. There are a handful of USB wands out there now that don't seem super expensive (under 5000) I have not had one in my hand to know if it is worth anything or not. Most bigger units are over 10000. My understanding is follicles are only noticeable by hand at 3/4 inch basically at the moment pairing needs to happen a U/S gives more precision as they can be checked as they develop. I am just repeating what my research has come up I have never done it myself. I have only U/S metal for flaws.

Sorry to jack this post but when I palp I get a little crack like a we would pop out bones is this bad?

I just had some of my females ultrasounded today by a local breeder. It provided alot of information. If you can find someone willing to do it for you, thats the route I would go. Even if you pay them a few bucks its more than worth it.

I'll be looking into getting one in a couple of years as well. Like you, palpating escapes me. I've watched, I've tried...I feel nothing I can distinguish as anything, lol. I can't even palpate females I know are gravid. :P
It would be a lot handier to know exactly when the males need to go with them to be most effective.
They're definitely not cheap, but as an investment, well worth it. There is, I gather, a learning curve when it comes to figuring out how to use them and interpret what you see.
