found my female bp dead this morning
Hello friends, last night my baby bp regurged her mouse she ate on Thursday and this morning she was dead. Any ideas? Her temps were 95 on the warm end and 86 on the cool side. Box was clean she was is good health, well so i thought. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

How long did you have her?

What were you measuring temps with? Where were you measuring temps?

What was her eating history with you? Had she been exhibiting any restless behavior or any other odd behavior recently?

Off the top of my head, 86 is hotter than I would maintain a cool side temp for a ball python. What was the ambient temp?

Your temps are about five degrees too high on both ends...but that in and of itself shouldn't cause such a severe issue, I don't think. We'd need to have a LOT more information if you wanted us to make any guesses about what might have happened.

    How old was the baby?
How long have you had it?
Who did you get it from?
Has it eaten for you before?
What else can you tell us about its enclosure?
    -- Substrate
    -- Heating source
    -- Humidity levels
    -- Type of enclosure
-- How you're measuring temps and humidity

The more information you can give us, the better chance we would have at giving educated guesses.

I'm sorry for your loss :(

Even if it was husbrandry related, I would look into getting a necropsy done (especially if you have more snakes in your collection) but that's what I would do. It may find something, maybe she wasn't internally "right"?

I have no idea why she passed away but I'm terribly sorry for your loss.

She swas hatched in June and i got her in October. She ate every week. She did refuse a meal once. The hummidity was at 50 percent. I check temps with a duratrax digita temp gun i use for my rc trucks. I had her in a 4 qt tub shoe box size i belive in a rack that has 3 inch heat tape. Amdient room temps stay about 83 degrees. She was on coco tec kept moist but not wet.
I have thermoter that gives me temps and humidity.
I bought her from a local pet store that is now out of business. But she was healthy when i got her and was in good health until last night. I had seen her drink several time after eating.

Where do you get your feeders? My boyfriend had a BP for a few years when he was younger that took a rat he offered very reluctantly (she normally had a good feeding response, just didn't seem to like the one he got for her that day). After she finally ate it, he found her the next morning with it regurged and his snake dead. The feeder was from his local petco/petsmart and he figures it was something in the rat

Oh my god, that's horrible! Well now I've got an even better reason than price to order my rodents online. Geez. I wonder if the pet store would even do anything about that if one complained.

Probably not, as their live rodents are meant to be sold as pets and not feeders. I've heard that if sales associates find out you're going to feed the fuzzy things to snakes they can refuse the sale. He and I both get our animals F/T from local suppliers and online now, haven't had a problem yet :D I'm excited too because he loves the little normal male I got as a freebie when I bought my fire girl, gives him a chance to have a pet snake again and with a ton more info than he had available before (pet store info)

Rodents being sold as pets in stores are often on either preventative or treatment antibiotics for the opportunistic pathogens they *all* naturally harbor and frequently manifest as respiratory illness due to the stress of shipping and crowded conditions in the store.

I know I've read here about some antibiotics being very dangerous to snakes.

We're you feeding f/t? I've heard of people's snakes dying because the rodent wash properly thawed. When the snake ate the partially frozen rodent it froze the snake from the inside. Just something I heard, I personally feed live so just a stab in the dark here.

I don't know why your bp died but I am sorry for your loss. I know how you feel however, I bought a baby pb at Petsmart and a week after purchasing her she died. I was devistated. Nothing seemed to be wrong, no RI, no mouth rot, no loose stools, no sign of injury, but she died anyway. Petsmart was kind to me and gave me another bp which is thriving so who knows why the other one died. It's frustrating but sometimes there is no answer.

there are actually more pros than cons to feeding f/t. As long as you make sure that your prey is properly thawed/heated than you have nothing to worry about. I have half of my animals on f/t and half on live. personally i hate live feeding. I panic every time they miss the headshot.

Feeding a partially thawed rodent will not "freeze the snake from the inside" although it is harmful. The cold will mean the snake can't digest properly and it might regurgitate it, depending on how 'unthawed' it was. If they have nice temps in the cage and the prey was just not hot enough, they will probably be fine.

Feeding F/T has benefits, but it really does require thawing the prey properly and heating it to the right temps.

I dont remember if you got the mouse f/t or live from a shop (sorry I read everyone's posts) but is it possible that the person who had it had recently (2-8hrs) sprayed prevent a mite and the mouse was covered with it and when the snake consumed it the snake died sometime later. I'd ask who ever you got the feed item from if thats what happened and then warn them about all the feeders being potentially dangerous to snakes. This is the only thing I can think of. Sorry for your loss though. :/
