Put a new mama's mind at ease and....

HI!!! I am new here. I've read quite a few threads during my research and browsed through pictures. This is not our first snake. We also have a normal BP that's about 2 years old that loves to eat.

For starters, here's my new baby. I got him/her/it for Christmas as a gift from my family. Of course I was a dummy and didn't know some of the questions I should have asked like... oh... is this a BCI or BCC, etc. It really doesn't matter to me because I love "him"! The striking tail colors and pink drew me to him and his sweet disposition won me over. :banana: So, what do you think? He has, and yes I counted, 4 peaks. He is also about 24" long. I still need to weigh him.

He seems to be adapting just fine. Easy to handle, ate his first meal on day one, and has already urinated and defecated.

Now to ease my mind... no matter how much research I do I can't seem to find out what "normal" behavior is. I will find him in a bitty little coil, all stretched out across the bottom of his tank, kinda lounging on top of his hide, and his favorite thing that bothers me... he likes to remain up on the side of the tank like he's waiting to be taken out. He doesn't always do this. Most of the time its only after I put him back in his enclosure. I am of course like any new mama and am constantly worried about health, is it too warm or too cool, is that normal?, etc. He is a very curious and engaged little guy and putting him back in his home is always a bit of a struggle. "NO!!!! Don't put me back." :rofl:

There is nothing "normal" about boas lol. I've found they all really act differently, mine hides more than my ball pythons do, and I know others that have some that climb...just be sure to look over the care sheet, make sure your husbandry is correct, and stop worrying mama ;)

And yeah... I have read tons of care sheets. Research, research, research. I am driving my hubby bonkers. lol Everything seems to be good. Temps, humidity, etc. I just need to relax and enjoy him.

Honestly, I keep mine at about 88-90. After being a part of this community for almost a year now, I wouldn't go anywhere else for info. It's consistent and correct, you'll find numerous other "care sheets" online, unfortunately not all of them are correct :(

Really? That high... hmmm. That's about where I was keeping things but my temps before seemed a bit low but then I was worried that it was too warm. I've been trying to stick to caresheets from breeders and redtailboa.com. Looking for what is the most common. Some seem to be literally copied word for word from here - http://www.redtailboas.com/f110/down...ion-3-a-31312/

My hot spot temps seem to be fine. Much like yours. Its the ambient that's giving me issues. It seems to want to creep up towards 85 or so. I don't want it to be too warm but also am tweaking things to be closer to the 80-82 mark. Its been difficult to find that happy median between 84 ish and 78 ish. :( Am I being too paranoid?

78 degrees will by no means harm your baby. I would worry if it was closer to 75 or below, but really, if you've got that hot spot, I'm sure "he'll" regulate himself just fine. :D

Thanks hon!!! I feel better now. His warm side seems to be steady at about 88-90. I'm sure its even warmer in the center. I will be getting more trustworthy thermometers this weekend so I feel more confident about his environment.

I had a RTB for 8 years and always kept her hot spot at 88-90 degrees. Worked perfectly.

So cute!! What did you name him??

Very pretty Boa! Mine doesn't like to go back in her enclosure either. Most of the time when I get her out she will come on out half way to greet me. Enjoy!

We've been calling him Little Guy. Kinda ironic if you ask me. I thought we came up with a name for him and I just don't use it so... still searching. :rolleyes:

Well... nothing like digging up and older thread. If anyone is curious it turns out that my little guy, or gal, is a BCC. Guyana to be exact. :gj:
