Got photos from the nasty pet store
Since last time no one responded to my calls and emails, I got pictures from the pet store that was so..offensive. Surprisingly, they were a lot better than they were last time. Though "better" is relative. You'll see by the pictures what is "A lot better" than what they were.

This is their planted tank example with a young female betta inhabiting it. That white fish on the upper right coming up for air. That poor girl.

Firebelly toad tank. The algae in there is actually thick, not just on the walls. Like someone stuck green cotton candy in the tank and it takes up most of the water space. Look at that grime in the gravel too. I watched them put crickets in the tank, so supposedly there are frogs in there..somewhere.

Supposedly this is their firebelly salamander tank. I...I don't know if any LIVING salamanders have been here in..months? years?

Sad iguana. Listed at 200 dollars by the way. No uvb lights or water dish in sight.

This is sad. This isn't a young bird or one that's just molting or even just losing feathers from stress.. I actually watched in horror as the finch tank mates ripped up this poor birds face. That pink on the back of his/her head is blood from the attack. The whole front of the bird was bare--I wish birds were easier to get pictures of, this one wouldn't hold still. Manager didn't care when I called him over. Apparently 'birds are just like that'

A...broken back discus fish. I can't tell if it's TB, an injury, or a horrible birth defect. Either way the poor thing can barely swim. If that IS TB, they could be in huge trouble. The tank is unlocked and easily opened, and as it is the lowest tank in the building, it is easily in any child's reach. Fish TB is transmittable to humans, and they could easily get a young kid ill.
They haven't restocked the enclosures where animals died. The feces and shed from the ball python who starved to death are still there. The feathers from the cockatiel who died are still there. A lot more empty cages. The only new animal they had was a young kingsnake who was healthy. Of course, they had only gotten him yesterday.
It's very sad. They overcharge--a lot--for their animals. That means the animals sit there and wait to be bought. But they don't take care of the animals while they are in the store. Awful.
I'm determined to get these guys shut down. No one listened when I didn't have pictures. Hopefully now they will. And if they don't, I'll go back for more pictures, or videos. Because nothing should get to this level. And this is an IMPROVEMENT.... Sorry guys..that's not enough.

Thats horrible. :/
That salamander tank made me nauseous. It looks like what you would see in your septic tank. Is that just the angle or does it look septic tanky?
-
I've never looked in a septic tank...If you mean more slime than water, yes. It's got a nasty slimey goo on the bottom of the tank floor, and fuzzy brown algae at the top of the water that sort of looks like bubbles from the tank have..fossilized. Bizarre and nasty. I didn't see anything in it thank goodness, but..why wouldn't they clean the water out anyway?! Good grief..
-
Well either have I, but I imagine it looks like a bunch of poop floating in a mixture of water. With bubbles. And from what you're describing thats what it looks like.
I have the same questions. Why wouldn't they change that? There is no excuse. Thats gross. Even if there was nothing in it and all the other cages were PERFECT. I still probably wouldn't buy from them if I just saw that.
-
Thats so gnarly. I wish you luck getting something done. Call animal welfare on them, or a health inspector, or whomever it is that is in charge of investigating these things in your state. Please, soon. Before more animals die.

Ewwww I hope you are able to get this pet store busted!
-
Trust me. These people are nasty. I'm going to show these pictures to anyone and everyone who can do something to stop this. They are going to listen to me. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get my voice heard. I personally think these images speak for themselves, but still, some people are tough to convince.
:rage: But oh no, I'm not going to let them keep up with this.

Try having your local news do a story, thats what i'm working on with the store I ranted about yesterday... Our local Fox23 does a rant section so they are always lookin for good stories... Remember this, most press will do their own investigations and get the proper personal involved alot faster then the regular public will... Just my 2¢

Re: Got photos from the nasty pet store
have you contacted PETA? i would think they would have a field day with these pictures, especially since its a pet store and not just some dude
-
Hadn't thought of contacting any news people or PETA. I had actually been thinking of getting more people involved, maybe contacting a humane society.
The thing is--Texas appears to have no laws on how animals need to be kept. They could be in shoe boxes or zoo enclosures. It is all dependent on if you can prove this is animal cruelty. I'd say they are crossing that line. But there are so many..dumb..people who don't see what we see. I saw a dying ball python, the customers next to me saw a "cool snake".. I see an injured fish, while a family told me how "cute" it looked. People were overjoyed that they 'don't have to buy dechlorinator for the bettas!'
The only reason the animals are still here is price I swear. You would not believe what the customers were saying. That's probably why the reptiles and such are the WORST, because they want to charge 180 dollars for a baby ball python.
I'll get in touch with anyone who can take them down. It looks like the burden of proof will be with us, so they need to know about fish and reptiles enough to realize this isn't normal or healthy!

Anyone of YOU out there who thinks peta is in ANY way on out side is just plain stupid. Yes, I mean stupid.
They and hsus are our sworn ENEMIES. Same thing for most news shows.
Call your department of animal regulation. Call the better business bureau, call the local pound and ask them if permits are necessary to operate a pet shop and if they are, find out if the shop has them and they are up to date.
Calling peta or hsus is like trying to put out a small fire by pouring gasoline on it. Don't involve them.
Unless of course you want to help them take away every pet from every person everywhere in the world. That's what they want. And they're lying sacks of crap to boot.
-
Yeah... that's why I hadn't thought of contacting them. They don't even pop up in my mind as rescuing animals, just being idiots. I figured it wouldn't go well and would end up with knee jerk reactions to fish and reptiles in general. Don't need Texas to be the next Ohio with legislation and all that. I should have been more clear I still wasn't planning on contacting them haha. By humane society, I meant a local one.
I just emailed the local pounds and humane societies around the store to let them know what is going on to see if they can get involved. Besides, even if someone like PETA were to get involved, all the animals would end up killed or dumped off at that very humane society anyway. I know that permits ARE necessary to run a shop, I can see if they really have theirs.

trust me, I hate peta just as much as anyone else here, bit if nobody else will do anything about it, it might be worth it to call them this ONE time, as a last resort
-
No, it would never, EVER be 'worth it' to attract the attention of PETA. It's not in the best interests of the reptile hobby, or of the animals themselves. They would consider your well-kept animals to be in just as bad of a situation as the ones in the pet store, make no mistake about it.
-
Re: Got photos from the nasty pet store
yeah, that is a good point
-
If there's one good thing PETA does, it's raise a stink about something.

When you're that full of crap you bring the stink with you.
They're just bad. How is it possible to shake hands with crap and not get any on you?
Not even as a last resort. They're the enemy and in this case the enemy of my enemy is not my friend.
-
Well, I didn't say it would be the kind of stink you want.
There's a distinct difference between a finely aged cheese, and a dog turd. :D
