I want to see pictures of vanillas...adults, babies, next to normals, next to fires...etc. Trying to develop an eye for vanillas!

Ok, my boys and I will oblige.

This is my breeder male vanilla, he's sitting at around 950 grams.

At first glance, he might appear pretty normal, but there are differences. In the second pic, you can see the faded head that is a vanilla trademark. He is a really good example of the morph.

Now, here is is next to a "pretty much normal as normal can get" male who's roughly the same size.

You can tell right away the huge difference in color. The vanilla is not only lighter, he has a plainly yellow cast to his body.

In this photo, you can see the normal carries a faded head as well, but you can still see the distinct difference between the two.

Now, this is him with my fire male who is about 800 grams. You can see the difference at once. the fire is also lighter than a normal, but his color runs towards cream and not yellow.

Here again, you can see the faded heads. But again there is a noticeable difference between the two.

I hope this helps in some small way.

It does for me. I guess it's just realizing what 'color' your actually looking at. Side by side, it is easy, but separate will still take some time.

    Thanks for sharing =)

I have two AMAZING vanilla females babies. They both are really light and crazy patterns. One having a really nice jungle pattern! I know they will make great vanilla creams! I only have pictures one of them since the other is in shed. This is the one without the jungle pattern.

That first vanilla in this thread looks a heck of a lot like my pastel female.

Yes, at first glance he looks like a lot of things. Light normal, pastel, someone even asked if he was a hypo once. But he's a vanilla, from a proven Gulf Coast Line.

He's actually even nicer in person, and just out of shed he glows! As a baby he was much, much brighter, he actually darkened with age. It appears to be a vanilla thing, they start bright, at around 300 grams they go dark like a normal, then around 600 they start to lighten again. At least, that has been the case with several whose owners I have spoken to about his color change. He produced two beautiful vanilla babies for me last year, and I hope he'll provide me with a few more this year.

I asked a vendor at the last show I went to how he told his vanillas apart from normals, he said "they are usually a nice cream color, they have some fading on the head and their tails a brighter than the rest of their bodies".

WOW! angllady and jball! what great photos! seriously couldn't ask for better photos and explanations. thanks so much! i second the mojave/mystic notion.... and the thing i've noticed with yellowbellies....nicer ones have heavy blushing and flames and a distinct yellow overcast as well as the telltale yb belly. my yb male is not so nice but he's def a yb.

heres another question: what color are vanilla eyes? fire eyes? i picked up a strange dinker thing that is noticeably nice and light and has silver eyes, completely clean belly, and a light head. looks more like a fire than a vanilla though. i will post pics as soon as i take some in some outdoor light with a comparison normal, of course.
