Look what I got for FREE!
I went to my first Madison Area Herpetological Society meeting tonight and became a paid member. Our Society is still relatively small, but with a growing group, and other declining area societies, Madison should be the largest in Wisconsin after this year (if it isn't already.) I hitched a ride with Kinra, a friend of mine with whom most of you on this site are familiar. Tonight was show and tell, since there was no guest speaker planned. I brought my blood python. Kinra brought a super cool crested gecko. She had also brought this guy to give to another member to make room for a new addition to her collection. Well, the other member never showed and Kinra didn't have the space to take him home, so guess what?! I got a free male hypo BCI!!! Pretty awesome considering early next week, i'll be receiving my Guyana BCC!! Thanks Kinra!! He's gonna be all good!
I'm glad I went to the meeting tonight, not just because of the snake but because of the people I met (in person, not just on facebook) and the networking that will develop, also the contribution of ideas for educational expos in the future and addressing a fight against banning many species of reptiles locally. It feels good to be part of it. Can't wait until next month!
Here he is fresh out the snake bag before he went into his qt tub. My camera sucks...

Be on the lookout for pictures of my guyana early next week!

I'm glad he went to a good home. I know you'll take good care of him. :)
I'll send you his records tomorrow, they're hand written and I don't feel like typing them up tonight. :P

I'm not setup for shipping, if you want free animals you need to live in Madison, WI and catch me on a good day. :P

there was some other really cool herps there tonight too! Somebody brought about a 4 or 5 foot albino hypo jungle boa (i think?) and a big fat leechie...a lake matthews rosy boa that was almost metallic looking..there was a group of knob tail geckos, and this little green gecko that almost looked like a day gecko but i wanna say was in the Rhacodactylus family. It was the coolest little lizard ever, I just can't remember latin names at all.

Meetings with guest speakers are awesome too. I can't wait to see what happens within the next year. I know I'm going to try to get a position on the board, I'm actually think being the event coordinator would be a lot of fun. :D

i think you should put that programming knowledge to work and be and administrator for the forum as well ;)

Haha, it's up to Ryan, but I've been thinking about volunteering. I try to help out as much as possible when he asks for help. I think I might actually skip Tinley to help out all weekend at the Children's Convention. ^__^

Where are you, Georgia? LOL I'd rather be part of a herp society there than up here as far as field trips and herp outings go! We only have like one kind of skink that lives up here and its only in one county right by the mississippi river. other than that, no lizards. snakes are around, like milks, rats, bulls, hogs, garters, northern water snakes, we have timber rattlers and massasauga rattlers in the bluffs (we don't have mountains here) but they are super rare and i guess we have ornate box turtles but i think those are gone.

lol, thats true, we do have a wide variety of herps in the surrounding area. But as far as herp societies i haven't heard of any around here (maybe i need to google that, lol) My guess is I would have to go to ATL though.

You could always start one, our local society is only a year old. :)

True, i know NOBODY around here into herps though.

Make a facebook page and advertise it on atlantas herp society page or reach out to surrounding areas..there's gotta be some people. at least you'd have a way to connect with others in your area and collectively spread knowledge and opportunity to others that are into what you are into.

Nice pickup. Good luck with him.

this sounds a lot like where i live. here in iowa there are no mountains either but we've got the bluffs that run along pretty much the entire missouri river. ive never really tried looking for herps in there but i imagine there would only be some snakes.
im not sure of any herp societies around me, there may be some in des moines or omaha, idk if they have group meetings but the nabraska herp society is the one that puts on the herp show twice a year. ill have to look into these and see if i could go to one. thnx for the idea

I woke up this morning and remembered Eurodactylus! LOL its in the Eurodactylus family, not the rhacodactylus...I don't know how i remembered that! anyways, thought i'd update that in case some gecko expert was laughing at their comp thinking "haha, what an idiot!"
